This story did not disappoint. You can technically read it as a standalone, but there are cameos from other characters, so I'd read the series in order. If you liked Ruby Dickson's Ice Planet Barbarian's series, you'll love this. Why? Because it's just as witty and the humans and shifters have much different ways of being but can still be a perfect match for one another.
In this story, our bear Bryce sniffs out his human mate as she's leaving her friend's wedding to house-sit at their cabin. He follows her to make sure she's safe, but his bear brain takes over and he winds up stealing her away to his instead. He doesn't make excuses for his actions, but he also can't let her leave. He's afraid if he does, his bear will takeover completely and might accidentally harm her.
He's separated from the pack as it is because he can't control his bear. And it's not even his fault. He was never taught the way others were. His mom died when he was young, and his father retreated into his bear form to lessen the pain. Bryce was left to basically fend for himself. And he doesn't trust himself around others. His voice is gruff because he has so little practice using it.
They wind up bonding over romance books. Then some friends stop by who bring him supplies. They chew him out for kidnapping her, and he asks for their help to keep him at bay so she can leave. He just doesn't want to hurt her.
If there's any hope of a happily ever after, he'll need to learn how to control his wolf. Not just for her. He's tired of being alone. He wants to live in the community. He wants to belong. But he won't be able to get anyone to trust he's not a threat without first believing he can change. Maddie doesn't believe he's broken. She wants him to heal from the abandonment of his father and community.
If you want a spicy bear shifter romance with characters who nerd out over books, see the best in each other, and fight their inner demons, Bearly Civilized is a good place to start.
