I was given an advance copy of this book through the publisher to facilitate a review. This is a great story, a total page-turner. I had not read book one prior to reading this but have since bought (and read) it. The story does work stand-alone but is given more depth and meaning in its proper context.

The writing is superb, the action scenes well developed and so are the characters which all feel very "alive" and real. There is a lot of scenery from the UK which will tickle the locals in Liverpool and London, but it's described well enough for us non-Brits to tag along. I warmly recommend this series to anyone (adult or teen) who's into a bit of fantasy with a dash of sci-fi.

I loved this book. I even let my food grow cold as I just had to keep turning the page. I love the characters and am living every twist and turn with them. It’s a truly chilling tale and I found myself metaphorically covering my eyes whenever Saunders appears. I am also never going to look at seagulls without suspicion ever again. Brilliant. On to the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced!

Beat Surrender, second installment in Bob Stone's thrilling, fast paced YA trilogy. Things are a lot more complicated in this world that Joey Cale and the others now inhabit. There are more characters and action moves swiftly. There is so much I can't say or my review would be littered with spoilers. Birds, in particular, gulls are far more terrifying and larger than in Hitchcock's short story, the much sought after Book is as powerful as the tome in Evil Dead and bodies and surprises litter the pages. There are scenes that are horrific and death can come swiftly. No-one is safe. We also get an insight into the author's beliefs and interests. Extra value! This is a plot- driven tale and the book can be read in one sitting.

Like the first book in this splendid series, Bob Stone creates characters you really care about, facing a complex and thrilling range of dangers. The plot is fast and furious but his easy, authoritative narration lets the reader sit back and enjoy the ride. I particularly like the grounding he gives to this strange world by using similes that are apt and totally on the money: where demonic smoke is likened to a saucepan that had burned dry, for example. Or where a split personality has a voice that is like your own sounds on an answer-phone. And there's a dog! What's not to love?
