Because the Earl Loved Me: A Historical Regency Romance (Happily Ever After Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 423 ratings

Life should be simple for the beautiful daughter of a duke. Courtship, marriage, children, with a man such as the careful, practical Christopher, the Earl of Merryweather. Except Lady Anne Finchley has dreams of gracing the stage as an actress, a forbidden calling for a woman of her birth.

A chance meeting at a country theatre changes Anne’s fate forever. When she falls victim to a shocking accident, she finds herself saved by her brother's best friend, the man she once rejected and begins to see him much differently than she ever has before. It might just be too late for Christopher, who must overcome Anne’s rejection of him and the scandal now attached to her.

Everything is telling them they are wrong for one another -- but will they have their second chance when being together feel so right?

This Regency Romance contains some steamy scenes.

Anne is the daughter and sister of a duke. She’s grown up in the confines and privilege of nobility. There are rules and etiquette that must be followed and adhered to in order to avoid scandal.

But her heart’s desire is to become an actor. On the stage. Not marry off after her debut season.

This dream comes at a time when young adolescent boys were no longer playing the women’s roles, but to be a woman on the stage was most improper. A woman on the stage was a harlot. Most definitely not suitable for a duke’s daughter.

However, Christopher comes courting. Anne tries to do everything in her power to dissuade and discourage him from her. He’s her brother’s best friend! She pushed the limits so far that she did run off with a troop of actors, set on killing two birds with one stone: get rid of the stuffy nobleman and get on the stage.

Except a jealous troop member sets out to enact an accident that ruins not only Anne’s dream but also her face. While Christopher still was able to rescue her and mostly shield her from scandal, everything changed.

I really liked this one with the sparring between the love interests as well as the action. The plot kept moving along. There were moments I didn’t like Anne or Christopher as an individual, but it wasn’t a no coming back from this level of dislike.

I didn’t like the injury scene or certain comments and events that happen afterward. While there was a grain of truth to some characters’ comments, it was beyond socially deplorable etiquette and just cruel. It more than made its point to Anne.

The whole series was great. This one was a bit over the top for a duke’s daughter and sister. But enjoyable.

A different story about a young Lady sister of a Duke who wants to go on the stage. She loves singing and acting but couldn't as it was frowned upon. Then she ran away to join a wandering troop.

This is a unique and delightful story of a Lady and an Earl. This is a quick and easy read. It is full of life, laughter and romance. The characters are well developed and have wonderful personalities. The story carries a lot of different emotions. There is whimsical happiness, resolute stubbornness, no respect for convention, scandal, pain, shame, unhappiness, sadness, hopelessness, hope, fear, elation, contentment and romance. Lady Anne Finchley is one and twenty and has no desire to be married. She wants to live her life her way and wants no one to control her. Anne’s mother, Lady Cecelia, the dowager duchess of Breckenridge would be happy if Anne was to marry. Her brother, Alastair, is the Duke of Breckenridge. They live at Longhaven Manor. Lady Honoria Smallbrook is Anne's dearest friend. Christopher Anderson, Earl of Merryweather, who lives at Gracebourne Manor, is an old friend of Breckenridge and they have come to an agreement that He will ask Anne for her hand in marriage. When Anne first hears of this, she is appalled that her brother would agree to such a thing without her consent. Breckenridge tells Christopher that Anne does not want the match. He recommends that Christopher spend time with her and hope she will come around. Well Anne does the opposite. She tries to show Christopher how unsuitable she is so that he would withdraw his desire to wed her. Then everything goes wrong. Anne finds she is feeling things she never felt before when she is around Christopher and doesn't realize that her future actions would bring forth humiliation, shame and it pushes Christopher away. Oh.. what a complicated life Anne has. She realizes through it all, she loves Christopher and hopes it is not too late to make amends. Another great instalment; a Duke who doesn’t know exactly what he wants but it takes awhile for them both to work out what they both want... lack of communication so hopefully they can learn what they want

Eleanor is a gutsy heroine. The high seas afforded a good adventure. A dry good read which kept me page turning.
