The Best Half Of Your Life: A Woman's Guide To Prioritize Yourself, Begin Anew, Rekindle Your Inner Powerhouse And Find True Freedom After 50 Kindle Edition
If you are a woman approaching 50 or past it and suddenly finding life to be confounding, then you are likely to be going through menopause, facing gendered ageism, and feeling invisible.
You are not alone and many of us are learning how to manage this difficult period of midlife transition to make the next half, the best half of our life.
The Best Half Of Your Life is a handy guide to help you find the courage and the skills to navigate the minefields of this new stage of your life.
Written very simply, it shares self-discovery combined with research by the author and walks the reader step by step toward positive change.
The book's entire premise is to become a support system during a very challenging period of a woman's life. The idea is not to take on change with more change - rather face it with self-discovery, a reconnection with what you truly are, and nurture whatever is the best of yourself.
Why you need to read this book
Today in a best-case scenario, you can be expected to live up to 100. There is enough and more evidence that we are living longer than ever before.
Justifiably then, turning fifty becomes a major milestone in our life. Our 50th birthday is a much-celebrated event for having traversed the long journey - arduous or otherwise.
It can be a fantastic mid-point from where you can enjoy all the new youthful trends through your children and also glean all the wisdom of life ahead from your elderly parents.
"You are like the lighthouse with a beam swinging between the infinity of the ocean and the defined contours of terra firma."
But, and there is a big but, especially for women - turning 50 is also very tumultuous.
Navigate the Big M
"Anxious, sleep deprived and forever hot….we swing between despair and delight like a trapeze artist."
There are bodily changes with the onset of menopause, causing hot flashes, insomnia, fatigue, weight gain, and weaker bones. Not to mention the havoc of depleting hormones on our emotional health.
Without getting into much medical detail, the book outlines the physical and emotional aspects of menopause and how common sense lifestyle changes can help.
Overcome life-stage challenges with self-discovery
As if this were not enough, there are life-stage issues like empty nest syndrome, elder care, loss of a loved one or at times even divorce compounding this hurricane of change. It is the cumulative impact of everything colliding all at once that can make you so overwhelmed, that it can lead to depression and in extreme cases, self-harm. Learn how to rekindle your belief in yourself and tap into the powerhouse of strength that lies within. Recognize that now is the time to look forward to life and that there is literally no looking back.
Learn to go from being invisible to an assertive presence
The focus of the book is on how we can avoid becoming invisible - an inevitable trap for aging women - and tap into our powerhouse within to believe in ourselves and step out boldly. How we need to find a purpose that results in actual income, whether we need the money or not. How earning is linked to self-worth and fuels your drive to do better for yourself every day.
Become a part of a growing community
Many among us have never been healthier and happier before in life, as they are now after their fifth decade. Thanks to technology today, there are many ways to connect with them, share experiences, learn, and get their support to recraft the next half of our life as our very best. At the close of the book, there are several links to various community groups as a ready reckoner for the reader.
The Best Half Of Your Life is must read for all women, regardless of their age, as it gives great insights into healthy and happy ageing to ensure that your most productive years are in front of you.

About the author

Dipika Narayan is a senior communications professional whose keen desire for an exciting career that allowed for individualistic expression took her from an obsession with acting to advertising where she was consumed for over three decades.
The pandemic in 2020 brought her work life to an abrupt end which made her question if the unique and complex midlife transitions of women were responsible for the collapse of all that is familiar. Her research on the subject led her to the devastating compounded impact of menopause, gendered ageism, empty nest, and disproportionate elder care responsibilities… in fact, every aspect of a woman’s life at this stage was a massive toss-up. And she needed all the support that was there.
Ironically, this period was also the greatest opportunity for her reinvention – and for the first time in her life, it wouldn’t be for anyone else but herself.
Dipika has written ‘The Best Half of Your Life’ as the first step towards adding her voice to help women like herself find their way through this confounding period. Her next step is to start a platform, The Fifty/Fifty Life, toward adding more and more voices to join the conversation.
Dipika lives and works alongside her husband Narayan Kumar to consult, build, write, and design anything and everything that has to do with WordPress and brand communications for small businesses.
www.bluemountaincode.com is the author’s business website for consulting and projects.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2023This book is meant for women aged 50+, which is a bit older than me, but I decided to read it anyway because of the premise that it offers hope and advice for getting through society's negative view of women past a certain age. I agree that past 50, that outlook is worse, and the resources recommended are meant for 50+. However, the advice is sound for women 30+ about not seeing yourself as worthless, reminding you that you are your own person and have your own life, that you can be (and are!) still successful in many domains. Therefore, while it is most useful for 50+, I think that any woman 30+ who's feeling discouraged by the way others view her (as being used up, too old, only existing to serve husband/children, and the like) could benefit from this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2023Narayan reminds us of the power we have always had as women, a poignant fact we have learned to suppress because of the societal conformities. Reading this book alongside my daughter, we notice that we share more experiences despite the age differences, highlighting the plight of change in a woman’s body and mind. However, Narayan expertly emphasizes that this is not a plight; rather, it is the blessing of our gender that we can use to our benefit. She highlights the importance of having a support system of other women to navigate the challenges in life as we get older. This book gives hope that with the right mindset, we can not just endure, but also overcome the challenges that come with life’s incessant changes.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2023I'm 53 and stumbling across this book couldn't have come at a better time. I related to everything the author discussed and was thrilled with all of the resources she includes in the book for women over 50, learning to navigate this next chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read to take charge of your life dear friend
I loved the book as I could completely relate to every word written by Dipika. It is a very quick read yet effectively captures everything a fifty plus woman goes through with very useful tips and guidance to not only cope but flourish once you ready yourself for it. The way menopause has affected my body has been exactly the way she has written it, not an easy subject for anyone to articulate about. I have made a note of all the links she has researched and put such a wonderful database together for one to refer to all over the world. Would definitely recommend the book to all my school friends and to those who want to make a choice to change course to embrace freedom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly honest
Enveloped in a beautiful front cover, Dipika Narayan’s voice talks to you in a refreshingly honest way. The author has addressed the difficult chasm that lies between youth and old age when a woman in her 50s begins to take stock of what she has lost as opposed to what she has gained in the decades that have gone by because social conditioning doesn’t allow her to enjoy the same privileges of seniority that a man takes for granted. From hot flashes to job loss, Dipika covers all the issues with ease. Without being preachy or dramatic, the author has shared her experiences to help you through your own trials. Easy to read, every chapter begins with a memorable quote and ends with bullet points that you can return to whenever you want a quick summary. The book will keep you company and assure you that you aren’t alone. Moreover, it is carefully researched and can serve as a helpful guide to navigating this transitional phase. Hoping to read more on this subject in the times to come. Dipika Narayan has set the ball rolling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!
Absolutely loved this book.... very succinct and well researched, it talks about why & how circumstances change for women in the latter half, and what they can do about it. I am currently entering my 40s, but found most of the pointers relevant as well!
I especially liked that it was very practical, and written like someone is holding your hand, and is not very preachy.
Highly recommend you give it a go, regardless of your age or gender.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the book… It is the best half of our lives…
This is an important conversation to create awareness and support for midlife women who get besieged from all fronts all at once .... menopause, empty nest, elder care, work death, and the biggest one of all - a loss of self. The book is about rediscovering and reinventing with the opportunity to create the best period of one's life.
