About the authors
Jason Clor is a speculative fiction and technical writer living in Portland, Oregon. When not splitting infinitives and dangling participles, he enjoys photography, pizza making, mixology, tabletop games and literally herding cats.
Rohan is an Irish science fiction author descended from the oral storytellers of both the ancient Celts and Vikings… probably. Telling stories has been an essential part of human culture for thousands of years. Stories give us joy but they also teach us lessons and pass wisdom down through the generations.
That yearning to become a storyteller started young in Rohan, but a school system designed for academics and not the chaotic brilliance of a dyslexic mind stymied that aspiration.
But that smoldering desire to pass on stories, to express his creative soul, couldn't be contained. Inspired by the words of Rohan’s doppelganger Commander Riker, “Fear is the true enemy, the only enemy,” he started to write. At first Rohan spewed words onto the page like he had contracted the simian flu. But, with the help of his friends, Rohan began to sculpt those words into something palpable, something both ancient and new. An invite to everyone to share in the story and, most importantly, have some fun.
Donn Martyn is a writer and citizen astronomer settled in Salem, Oregon. He writes hard sci-fi along with light fantasy and is published by Lower Decks Press. When not staring at a blank page, Donn hikes in the nearby forests, contemplating the expanse of the universe(s?) while enjoying photography, geocaching, gazing into the frequently-cloudy night sky, and driving too quickly for conditions.
Amber Forbes accidentally moved overseas and became an actual alien. After battling the huge temptation to just read and play games all day, she instead delved into her own universes. Especially ones exploring concepts of society and humanity, finally finding a use for her degree in international studies and politics. But don’t worry, they’re also full of aliens, spaceships, and questionable choices.
When not writing, she can be found spoiling her four cats or playing the latest cross-platform video games. Find her at www.amberforbes.com for info on her current book.
Rachel A. Rosen is an activist, graphic designer, and for her sins, a high school teacher. In a previous life, she published two long running anarchist ‘zines and designed the uniform for the Christie Pits Hardball League.
She is the author of Cascade, Blight, and, with Zilla Novikov, the co-author of The Sad Bastard Cookbook: Food You Can Make So You Don't Die. More of her writing can be found in Beyond Human: Tales of the New Us, Instant Classic (That No One Will Read), The Dance, and Trollbreath Magazine. Rachel co-hosts the Wizards & Spaceships podcast with David L. Clink, and freelances as a book cover designer.
She lives in Tkaronto (Toronto), where she is the harried personal assistant to two cats.
T. E. LaMonte is a writer living in New Mexico, USA. She writes
primarily science fiction and fantasy, and enjoys reading just
about any genre. When not writing, she sculpts and paints in
traditional and digital media and spends way too much time
watching movies, television shows, and playing video games.
Ben Winter is a data scientist from London working in the mobile technology industry. When not imagining cyberpunk dystopias he can be found seeking them out in real life. His debut novel Latent State (part of the future Quantum State series) is available now.

Vera M. Key is the science fiction pen name for Verena Key, a writer of contemporary romantic fiction. If you like romance, visit and follow her other author page. If you prefer science fiction, stick around. She will be writing more of it.
Emma Berglund is a writer living in Sweden. She writes any story that comes to her mind. When not writing, Emma likes to scamper into the woods on horseback or sit at home watching K-dramas.
A.L. MacDonald is a Canadian sci-fi author. He lives in Ottawa, Canada with his wife and two children. Outside of working as a Mechanical Engineer, he enjoys sailing, reading, dreaming up mad inventions in his workshop or riding his e-bike and imagining using it for intergalactic deliveries.
Anna Otto is a science fiction, mystery, and short story writer. She has published a few short stories in anthologies while she is working on a science fiction trilogy. She enjoys creating memorable characters and putting them in high-stakes situations, then watching them squirm. In her free time, she is also a shrink, a traveler, and an avid hiker of the Pacific Northwest mountains. She is owned by two black cats.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2023Was pleasantly surprised at the diversity in this anthology. Don't usually go in for AI sci-fi and thought this would be predominantly that but it was so much more. Thanks! Good read!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2023My overall reading goal has been to focus on more short stories, so I was happy to pick this up. BEYOND HUMAN is a great grab-bag of stories, featuring the far future---or issues just around the temporal corner. AI, diseases, body modification, cloning, wars; this was a well-compiled group of stories and a good way to find some new favorite authors. Bonus that I really enjoyed the illustrations at the start of each story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024Each story depicts a world more dismal than the last. I kept reading in hopes of finding just one that posited at least a glimmer of optimism or a suggestion that AI could have SOME possible benefit to the human condition. Nope. The future is bleak indeed if it's anything like that described in these stories.
That said, the writing, apart from a few in which the author uses plural pronouns when referring to an individual, is generally decent and I recall finding but a single typo in the whole book. Also, the stories are imaginative despite the nearly unrelenting misery they envision. So, if you like being depressed, you might enjoy this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2023The title says it all: this science fiction anthology gives us 22 stories orbiting the same theme: What may come next in our species’s headlong rush towards self-directed (or self-inflicted) evolution?
My favourite entries include pieces by Rachel A. Rosen, Ramona Marr, Emma Berglund, Marten Norr, RLNPK, Anna Otto, and Briana Bedore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and eclectic collection
Though some stories in here appealed to me more than others, I believe the whole collection has something for everybody. There are some ‘standard’ tropes explored, but also some new imaginings. I recommend this to anybody who enjoys science-fiction. Some of the stories in here moved me, I am sure that some will move you too. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Eerie look at AI
Beyond Human is an excellent anthology that explores the rise of AI, what it means for humanity, and what does it even mean to be human. I enjoyed all 22 stories within, and they all had their own interesting take on this topic. I'm looking forward to reading more from Lower Decks Press and all the authors who contributed.
