Beyond Repair (Broken Heart Series) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 4,521 ratings

Everybody loves Katie. With her bubbly personality, her beauty, her never-ending supply of care and support for her patients and friends, and her huge sense of fun, there’s very little to dislike. Yes, she’s a bit scatty, she tends not to sweat the small stuff (like an engine light on her dashboard – that is until her Mini won’t actually start anymore), and she can talk the hind legs off a donkey, but none of that stops most people from thinking she’s pretty damn adorable. Well, most people, other than Sam, that is.

Sam is anything but bubbly. His surly demeanour is the complete opposite of Katie's, and, over the six years that she’s known him one thing has become very clear: Sam cannot stand her. The fact that he makes her nervous doesn’t help. Around Sam, her verbal diarrhoea is out of control, the snort that she tries to hold in when she laughs refuses to be suppressed, and her clumsiness assumes clown-like proportions.

If only he weren’t quite so intimidating, she might be able to act like a normal human, but his sheer masculine beauty is enough to throw her off before she’s even spoken to him. Then there’s the way he looks at her - like she’s something he’s scraped off his shoe. The combination is enough to short-circuit her brain.

Katie may be bubbly and bright but unfortunately, her past is not, and it’s started leaking into her present. She hides her fear from her friends, but when Sam finds out the danger she’s in, for some reason he is furious. Then again, there’s a reason Sam is the way he is. He has his own demons to contend with since leaving the Special Forces. The last thing he wants is to spend any time with the one woman that cuts through the numbness and actually makes him feel again.

But he simply can’t stand by if Katie is in danger; he can’t allow her to be hurt. Unfortunately, there are other ways to be hurt, and by getting closer to Katie, Sam may inflict more damage than her past ever could. Because Sam is damaged, and some things are beyond repair.

This is a full-length contemporary romance / romantic comedy with its own HEA and no cliffhanger.

Katie is quirky and sweet and an important pillar of her community. Sam is her best friend's husband's business partner. And best friend. Sam is former SAS and for six years treats Katie with nothing but open disdain. Yet she's still drawn to him. I love Susie Tate but this novel was a bit harder to swallow. Sam is a walking red flag. Maybe Katie's personal experiences and her profession allow her to deal with PTSD better than your so-called average woman. But, personally, I would have never let my friend near someone like Sam after the way he publicly slayed her verbally. No way. Still. A well written and emotional ride. Benji is a little menace and I'm looking forward to reading Goodie's book.

Absolutely hilarious but totally oblivious Fmav.

    Plot: 5📍
    Spice: 1.5 ❤️
    Overall: 3⭐
    Laughter: 3😅

I loved so much of Sam & Katie’s story. But I’ll admit, military-themed books, stories about military-trauma, etc., absolutely have to be right or I’m going to really struggle enjoying them.

Katie reminds me a little of myself in a few ways. She has a zest for life, loves her friends, family, and community so fiercely, and is perfectly happy to be her beautiful, goofy, outgoing, fun-loving self. She’s unapologetically happy in her skin and that’s amazing. I didn’t really like how some of her ‘traits’ were written as total bumbling idiot - doesn’t follow directions of nearly any kind (boxed-cake mix or security measures), constantly burns food because she just doesn’t bother. There’s adorably goofy and then there’s obnoxiously incapable. Katie teetered towards the later one a few times. A lack of basic life skills isn’t cute. And I didn't feel like she had much character growth at all.

Sadly, I have a few “Sam’s” in my real life, so I empathize and appreciate what he’s going through so well. The former SAS turned contractor is heavily scarred, mostly mentally, from what he’s experienced. His struggle to turn-OFF the emotion blocking and process the emotional trauma, the hyper vigilance, his desperate need for control of any and all situations, are classic symptoms I think nearly anyone would quickly recognize. The pain and trauma he carries, how his character carries it, is written extremely on-point. Contrasted with Katie, Sam does grow, experience setbacks, grows again, repeat.

The humor and one liners in this book were so great! I definitely laughed multiple times with some of the banter! And as with prior books, the circle of friends, couples now together, etc., are a wonderful supporting cast. As an American, I absolutely LOVE how Ms. Tate includes so many Welsh phrases, and for those of us who aren’t familiar with the region, get to take a little mental day trip to the adorable villages and smaller cities of Wales in this book, and peripherally in previous stories.

I wish this story had focused more on Sam's struggles, his narration/POV (most of the story was Katie's POV in 3rd person) and how he & Katie overcame them together. Instead 92% of the book was Katie moping around, not realizing what Sam was struggling with although she "had a special talent for people. She could read people easily,", and essentially just playing dumb to the real danger she was in from a physically violent stalker (who she didn't realize was a bad person).

Overall, while this book fell a little flat for me, this series has been amazing so far!

I can’t explain why I had to take off stars without sharing a few spoilers.
SO DON’T READ PAST HERE IF YOU DON”T WANT ANY MINOR SPOILERS:

Ye’v Bin War’nd!* say that in your best pirate accent!

So. Herein lies my frustration: Katie starts out as a likeable, bubbly personality, but she has zero growth. It’s fine that she’s written as a chatterbox. But she never LISTENS. She KNOWS she’s being stalked by a violent, violent man she was physically assaulted by in the past. And she doesn’t heed any of the security measures. She consistently mishandles Sam’s struggles with PTSD and in fact, in real life her responses would significantly worsen that impact on Sam. His sister, his mother, her best friend and her BF’s husband, all tell her Sam changed since an operation went particularly bad.

So, how is it that our FMC, a physician, who says she can understand and read people well, diagnoses a young person having a psychotic episode, but can’t see that the man she’s interested in, has PTSD until she’s literally TOLD he has PTSD at 92% of the way through the eBook? With less than 20 pages left in the story, including the epilogue?

    What DIDN’T give it away?
How he treats her with extra care and always keeps his eyes on her or physically close?
His often over-frustration to her disregard for her safety when she KNOWS she has a violent stalker?
    The nightmares?
    The hyper-vigilance?
The moments where Katie says she can see the deep pain in his eyes when little things slip?

Why doesn’t KATIE ever ask more about his background? Just stop blabbering and LISTEN for a change? Where’s HER character growth? She also consistently handles Sam’s stressors the exact wrong way… e.g.: After his crying out during a nightmare wakes her up, she tells him “You’re scaring me.” … Girl, whatever he’s just experienced, is CLEARLY 50x more scary than him calling out during a nightmare and waking you up. And how did she not realize RIGHT THEN it was PTSD? The reader can figure out Sam’s diagnosis from nearly the get go if not even from prior books where his “quirks” are mentioned. How the heck can a physician not see what’s clear as day?

It’s not until the very end, when she’s literally handed the ‘truth’ about Sam, she finally figures out she has to meet him where he is and on his tentative emotional ground. I rolled my eyes when she states his diagnosis in the book thinking “no sh*t, Sherlock. Whatever happened to “Katie had a special talent for people. She could read people easily…” Clearly not.”

I am so so impressed that Ms. Tate took the time to include such an important struggle so many veterans around the world face, and especially touching on the difference between PTSD resources now versus past World Wars. But I do wish the plot line had been more of the couple coming together, fighting together, working together to help Sam overcome his struggle, instead of Katie just constantly giving up, moping about, pining for Sam when he shuts down. She never fights for him. She never shows HIM that she’s not going anywhere. That SHE’S a safe place. We don’t see their struggle as a couple to help Sam conquer his PTSD. That’s actually entirely skipped - we go straight to the epilogue where everything is hunky dory.

Beyond Repair is the third book in the Broken Heart series by Susie Tate.

A big contributing factor to my love for this series, as well as this book in particular is Benji. I hope, desperately I might add, that Tate graces us with his very own starting role at some point. Even if it’s not romance. I just need more Benji in my life.

    Sam and Katie:
Another rom lacking in communication, rife with misconceptions. That it took someone painstakingly explaining that a man who’d withdrawn into himself, has done contract work overseas, and had a military career had PTSD. You’re a doctor for cripes sake. What the eff.
Katie is all things bubbly and self sacrificing. Somewhat ditzy, confusing given her medical degree, especially when it comes to her own safety considering she has a psychotic stalker pimp/human trafficker/drug lord as her ‘secret admirer’ and ex-boyfriend. *long suffering sigh*
Sam is absolutely enraptured by this crazily adorable and energetic woman from the moment he met her. But he’s drowning in his own past and demons.
Definitely interesting watching them struggle over their own issues and fight for each other respectively.

Honestly a little surprised there wasn’t more of a emphasis or scenes dedicated to the situation with Daniel.
And thankful that Goodie’s relation to this series has been explained. I’m glad we will get to further understand her in the next book.

This book ends before I am ready. The authors books always do. Sam is a typical male thinking he always knows best. Katie is beyond words, a good friend, a good doctor, great with kids and willing to babysit ( although I might think twice before asking her). If you like a book with angst, that might make you cry, will also make you smile this is the one for you.

J'ai beaucoup aimé cette histoire entre une généraliste extravertie et un ex-militaire souffrant de spt. Il y a de l'action, de l'humour, des personnages haut en couleur.

Alors pourquoi seulement 3.5 étoiles, me direz-vous ?

Ottima lettura.
