Okay, the plot is pretty goofy. Just on plot alone I would have given this only 3 stars.

However, the writing is outstanding. Good story flow, natural character reactions (light novels and manga come with a lot of stupid, unnatural and exaggerated reactions and it drives me nuts).
As an example: Yu (the hero), has two sisters. So, he doesn't freak out at the sight of bras and panties. No stupid nosebleeds, no running away, etc. Normal reactions for someone who has sisters.

It's also nice to have a hero that doesn't start out as a whiny loser, inept, or just plain stupid.

This book is worth reading for the writing skills if for nothing else, and the plot isn't that bad.

In a novel that is not an Isekai genre work, J-Novel Club has translated what is one of the funniest and crazy awesome stories I've read. It's not high literature or anything, but it is fun and that's what I freely admit I care about most in what I read.

The story is about a young man starting high school named Yuichi Sakaki. At first, he seems normal enough with something weird just happening out of the blue. This out of the blue weird thing being to suddenly wake up one day and see "labels" above people's heads. Things like "friend", "salaryman" (a typical male office worker), so on. But then things get weird and he begins seeing labels like "vampire", "witch", "serial killer" and the like.

Yuichi is freaked out and unable to see how to deal with this, and he goes to his big sister for help and advice. His big sister is weird, to say the least, and she's not the only one. You see, as the plot thickens with the increasingly bizarre situations that Yuichi gets himself into, we see he is not nearly as normal as he first seems.

Of course, this isn't his fault, as his big sister, Mutsuko, in the lifelong throes of what the Japanese call "middle-school syndrome" - which is someone, typically of middle-school age, taking as reality very detailed personal fantasies like having super-powers or some other things - has been training Yuichi his whole life to survive strange situations. Yes, I said training, as in having him practice absurd super-human concepts and acts that Mutsuki got from manga and other sources. She even has a school club about this, called the "Survival Club". Between her and his kid sister, Yuichi's kinda had it rough and he's a stand-up, but very weird and naive, guy.

I can't give away too much more about this story but to say that all of this is just an opening for poking lots of affectionate fun at light novel tropes with a hefty dose of sheer awesomeness in the actions scenes, and comedy gold.

Despite this, the characterization, while not exceptionally deep, is still at least deep enough to make you care about the characters. The only problem is that the characters are too tied to the worldbuilding to the point where they are a part of such and of the plot, instead of separate from it. I mean, Aiko and Natsuki are cool, and Yuichi is crazy awesome, but they are part of the plot and not really able to stand on their own. I hope they are fleshed out more in future volumes. Of course, the exception to this is Mutusko, who in her relatively short page-time, gets some pretty good characterization. Maybe cause she is the initiator of all of this and thus is more "apart" from the events and plot, instead of at the whims thereof.

Her knowledge, badassery, and weirdness and Yuichi's baddassery and weirdness basically sell the story. I look forward to future volumes.

    Rating: 4/5 Stars.

As others have noted, this series is crazy fun throughout. I'll just add that roundabouts volume three, the author starts explaining the world, and why "crazy is normal." And it's a beautifully clever explanation. Very clever world building!

I picked this up after reading the author's other series (My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me!), which is a parody of OP isekai protagonist stories (less over the top, but at least as clever, and just as easy to read.)

JNovel has recently entered the English light novel scene and this is one of their new titles. Pleasantly enough, it's a pretty decent one so far. Fujitaka has good technical skill and translator Elizabeth Ellis did a great job localizing it. The very opposite of the work Yen Press has been putting out in their VN line.

In this story you follow Yuichi as he wakes up one day to find out he can see text above people's heads. Unlike Death Note though, where it will display the name of the person, Yuichi instead sees words *related* to that person. As he tries to find out what the tags mean, he ends up discovering a whole new and dangerous world all around him.

The tone of this is very light-hearted. Lots of comedy and silly situations, but fortunately they're not pushed to slapstick enough to become problematic. I wish there were a few less fantasy elements but I guess the book is advertised as such and that's just what it is.

I feel like the plot and dialogue got a bit muddy in the final chapters and thus my 4 star rating, but hopefully volume 2 brings things back up again.

Damn good! Good pacing as well as the best character development in the first volume of a series that I have seen in some time! Also an interesting premise in its way with healthy dashes of comedy. It makes me look forward to the next book!

This felt like a fun cross between the anime versions of Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, where big sister is both his trainer and the person with a slightly odd world view.

I've read and enjoyed the full series of books, and the quality is consistent for all of them. The English translations are well-done, there are almost no editing mistakes, and the illustrations do a nice job of showing the characters as they appear.

I really enjoyed this LN. It was not a stereotypical beginning like I was expecting it to be. The humor in it was quite enjoyable and I like that it still left some things in the air to explore in future novels. If your on the fence the preview gives you a decent idea of what it's like.

Likeable main character and fairly amusing circumstances. Pokes good-natured fun at a lot of the anime/manga/light novel tropes, which includes itself, so that's always refreshing.

I Love it, the hilarity had me laughing in tears at the situations Yu is put through, it's got the start of harem, super powers, monster girls, crazy otaku sisters and this is only the first book. Basically if you like Konosuba (the anime not the novel, it's on my to do list) the I would lay odds down you will like this
