Some secrets can last for centuries.

Marcus Weaving is a retired psychology lecturer and therapist. Not a man to sit around, he volunteers at his local university. Years of clinical practice are put to the test when he receives a mischievous text from somebody called L.

Intrigued and unnerved, Marcus goes to the address provided and is welcomed by a beautiful blonde woman named Lily. Their story goes way back to his tumultuous youth when he had to flee from his abusive mother and other demons skulking around.

Timing for a romantic reunion could not be any worse. Marcus is about to become a grandfather and he has ongoing issues with his estranged, drug addicted son.

Why has Lily shown up after all of this time? And, why hasn't she aged a day?

I received this book for free. This does not impact my review in any shape or form.

To be completely honest, although Lily saving Marcus was a good start to their relationship, killing his mother was not. And no matter how twisted it seems, Lily killing Greg seemed just as malevolent. It speaks volumes to Lily’s anger; even though she thinks she’s doing the right thing, she isn’t giving anyone chances. She just can’t see beyond her own needs and the damage she’s causing. I need to agree with the Snake here: Lily is the perfect embodiment of wrath. She allows her emotions to overtake her, doesn’t think of anything other than how to satisfy her needs, even if it doesn’t seem like it at first. Her entire character actually reminds me of a conversation I had with my husband. While volunteering at a crisis shelter, I told him about the women and men who came through there, fleeing domestic violence relationships. He told me he could never work at a place like that, since all he’d be doing is hunting down the abusers and giving them their just desserts. I asked what he meant by that, and he never did clarify, but I knew what he wanted to do.

Interestingly enough, I consider Marcus the complete opposite, at least until Lily showed up. Rather than giving into his emotions, he practiced self-restraint, and was able to live a better life because of it. He didn’t necessarily move on from Lily, but he was able to build a respectable life for himself. I appreciated the relationship he had with Nell, and how patient he was when Greg fell into drugs. It’s heartbreaking to see him almost being forced to turn his back on his son. At the same time, I could understand just how frustrated he was. I’m not gonna lie; recovering from substance misuse is no joke. There’s gonna be a lot of relapses, a lot of lies, a lot of hurt and pain, and unfortunately, that’s a part of the process.

The authors reading really pulled me into the story.

All the things that Lily goes through, throughout time, is just wow.

Poor Marcus though. His life has been so hard and the poor man never seems to catch a break.

I'm going to be super honest, yesterday when I finished this book I was big mad.

But I've slept on it and I understand why it ended the way it did but I wasn't ready.

I'm used to happily ever afters and that is not this book.

I also didn't realize when I finished yesterday that it's book 1 of a series and that will make a huge difference.

I'm excited to see how the story develops and what's in store for Lilly and Marcus in the future.

Bittersweet Injuries is a gritty, deep, and intense ride at the end.

I ended up reading this one slowly. Though it is well written, I had a hard time getting through all the backstory chapters. They are important, I just wish they had been condensed a bit. I think the psychological part of this book was very well done.

Marcus, the male main character, is a psychiatrist and I think he is well represented. I liked the fact he is a mature individual and not some young guy right out of school. He is seasoned, and he has history with the main female character.

I have reservations about Lily. Her position as a ‘dove’ paired with just how flawed her character stretched me. But hey, being stretched isn’t always a bad thing. Her character is gritty and real. Her experiences were deep and painful. If the author had chosen a different occupation for her, I would have had no qualms with the character.

The story shows the really ugly side of humanity starkly. I cried the last few chapters. Over all, I am glad I took a chance on this book and even though I disagree with some ways God and divine beings were portrayed, it was still well worth the read.

I received an advance copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I don’t even know where to begin with this book.
It’s not quite my typical read but I’m so glad I read it anyways.
One could classify it as a paranormal romance or supernatural thriller…but it’s so much more than that.

SPOILERS (sort of)
The author beautifully weaves this story about the MFC Lily and her (to put it lightly) long and complicated history and her relationship with our MMC Marcus.
Lily isn’t human and her life has been spent as a warrior fighting for good and helping people.
She meets Marcus as a young man a defies her duty and the rules when she engages into a romantic relationship with him.
But because of Lily’s work, she has to leave Marcus behind. This of course leaves Marcus heartbroken but he ends up moving on with his life and starting a family of his own.
Lily shows up years later as young and beautiful as ever. The love between her and Marcus is still there but he’s not sure why she is back or if she will leave him broken hearted again.

This is a unique spin on angels, demons and theocracy as a whole.
It also touches on very deep/sensitive subjects as well as discusses dark times in our human history. Please do check trigger warnings because all topics and scenes may not be suitable for everyone.
I’m not sure if everyone feels the same way but this book made me think…feel…and I was immersed into this world the author created.

I highly recommend this to all readers. I believe paranormal or thriller lovers will enjoy this book but other genre readers may as well.

I’m looking forward to what comes next.
