- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseVery enjoyable read. I binge-read it in one day. I can only think of one other book that I tore through in one day.
After reading the description of this book, I incorrectly thought it was a fantasy story. Instead, I found that it was a compelling story about a young woman with a relateable but crushing case of magical thinking. Though Piper experiences more than her share of tragedy, the tone of this book elegantly avoids self-pity. It was interesting to read how she leaned into her diabetes as one thing in her life that was under her control.
I love Amie's tone. She made me laugh, she made me cry. Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA lot of readers will empathize with Piper and the heartbreaking connections she makes between the events in her life, dealing with shattering loss even as she finds support in unexpected places. As Piper comes to terms with a diagnosis of diabetes and learns to manage her condition, her perspective on life changes. This beautiful crafted story of challenge and redemption will stay with readers for a long time, and have us questioning the assumptions we all make about our lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017Format: KindleI was particularly interested to read this novella because the central character, Piper, has Type 1 diabetes, which plays a defining part in shaping her life and the plot. (My husband and our teenage daughter both have T1D.)
Piper is a vulnerable but purposeful young woman who has grown up feeling that her happiness is the direct cause of disaster for those most dear to her. Being diagnosed with an incurable disease that requires close control to stay healthy nurtures her inner control freak. I don't want to give any plot spoilers, but suffice to say that during the course of the story, she finds an unexpected resolution to her struggle.
The first-person narrative contains vivid writing and a clear sense of place in each of its different settings. There are occasional stand-out memorable phrases that really wowed me.
While mostly set in London, there's an international flavour - Piper is half German, half American - and I think it would work well for any audience around the world.
Given the medical themes at the core of the book, there is very little specifically about the practicalities of the medical care, but far more importantly this is about the psychological impact of living from day to day with a serious, chronic and incurable disease, and the struggle to stop it controlling your whole life. It is a thoughtful, intelligent and candid account from an articulate author who does just that, and I am sure that it will help others who don't have such a condition to understand those who do - and those who do have one, will find it a helpful read, if not always a comfortable one, honest as it is.
A memorable story that I will be recommending to others, particularly friends living with Type 1 diabetes.
Disclosure: I was glad to receive a pre-publication ARC to read, sent to me because of my own involvement with T1D.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was very well written, engaging and imaginative. It was very interesting to peek into the life of someone who is dealing with diabetes and how managing it can take over their life. I just wish the book was longer, I was really excited to see what happened to the main character next!
