Blood Born (Brides of Carpathia Book 1) Kindle Edition
Kate Ramirez has spent years running from a family determined to keep her caged. When she finds herself in scenic Newport Beach, it isn't long before she's drawn to a group of local eccentrics. But when a fellowship gathering turns into the scene of a bloody slaughter, she finds herself the lone survivor.
And prime suspect.
Sebastian Stone never met a case he couldn't solve—but he's never met a brazen beauty like Kate before, either. Chasing her down means going beyond the smoke and mirrors, into a dark world of myth and monsters, where shocking answers lead to more questions. Closer and closer to the painful truth of who Kate really is.
And what she is capable of.
Fans of True Blood, Anita Blake, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer will love this new urban fantasy romance series... with bite!

From the Author
As authors, we've both been fascinated by vampires since we read our very first scary stories as kids. Inspired by authors like Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Kresley Cole, we sat down to write an urban fantasy vampire romance set in our very own backyard. Our Brides of Carpathia series is full of sexy, sassy ladies out to claim the night from bloodthirsty alpha vampires, psycho stalker exes, and an empire in service to the most powerful demon lord of all time.
Weaving in threads of mystery and thriller, fantasy and a little bit of comedy, we are proud to bring you this series we hope you can really sink your teeth into!
From the Inside Flap
"Better?" she asked. I nodded. "Good. Have a sip of your drink, Kate, my dear."
"You're confusing me," I admitted, sitting up a little straighter. "Why are you here? You're definitely not my public defender." Waving my hand at the custom leather, the built-in minibar, the divider, and her little control center, I added, "No public defender makes enough to afford a custom town car with a personal driver."
I set my champagne flute in the drink holder at the end of the armrest beside its mate. "So how did you know about me?"
"First, let me ask you a question," she countered. "Were you fully aware of the nature of the gathering you attended last night?"
A pang of ugly chagrin hit my chest. "Uh... yeah, I guess."
"You knew you were walking into an occult-based group of misguided fanatics purporting to believe in the existence of benevolent night children, and claiming to worship them as a form of religion?"
"Yes," I grumbled, avoiding her gaze. "The Chantry of Selene. Yes, I knew it was a..."
"A vampire cult," she finished for me. "And the purpose of last night's gathering was...?"
"Does it matter?" I snapped. "You clearly think we're a bunch of lunatics."
"There is no we anymore, Ms. Ramirez." She took another sip of her drink and leaned back in her seat. "Only one member of your Chantry survived that little party. You're the only one left."
Detective Stone had said the same thing. Still, a sharp pain struck me in the stomach. I never had much in the way of friends, but a few of the people in the group hadn't been so bad. Sure, they were a little whacked in the head—especially our self-proclaimed primogen, David Pace—and I suppose I was, too, since I'd gone along with them for the last few months, embracing the whole night children thing. It seemed harmless, though.
At least until everybody died.
"You chose a rather unfortunate focus for your worship," she said. "Stupid, really. You would have been better off waiting for some intergalactic starship hidden behind a comet or an extraterrestrial ruler sending alien ghost babies to haunt your nether regions. Vampires, though... well, they love ignorant, willing victims."
I stared at her. "Selene wasn't a bloodsucking monster. She was... she was supposed to be the Mother of Night. Shepherd of the Ever-Living and Enlightened."
Carmilla gave an ugly snort. "Whoever heard of a vampire named Selene offering love and comfort to societal outcasts among mortals? If your enlightened leaders knew anything about real vampires, they'd know the only true queens of the night are the Striga, Elizabeth Bathory... and me."

About the authors
When she isn't visiting the worlds of immortals, demons, dragons and goblins, Brantwijn fills her time with artistic endeavors: sketching, painting, and working on graphic design. She can't handle coffee unless there's enough cream and sugar to make it a milkshake, but try and sweeten her tea and she will never forgive you. She moonlights as a futon for four lazy cats, loves tabletop role-play games, and can spend hours penciling naughty, sexy illustrations in her secret notebooks.
Brantwijn is the author of the Books of Blood and Fire, Chronicles of the Four Courts, and The Dark Roads series, as well as many short stories and novellas. She's also had short stories published in several small press anthologies. Follow her on Facebook, Twitter, or visit her at Strange Ways Station, her website at www.brantwijn.com.

Born on the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous,Torie is the illegitimate love child of Han Solo and Daenerys Targaryen. Rescued by Gandalf shortly before her home planet was destroyed in the last days of the Clone Wars, she was raised in relative obscurity by her foster parents, Severus Snape and Pippi Longstocking. At the tender age of 113, she inherited the best little whorehouse in Texas and is rumored to be bringing Sexy Back. A self confessed chocoholic, she's been engaged to Willy Wonka despite gossip surrounding a lifelong affair with Bruce Wayne.
And clearly, she practices delusion on a daily basis.
The truth is, I'm just an overgrown kid with a vivid imagination who loves to write and share my crazy with the world. My future plans include, hopefully, buying a lovely Scottish castle and convincing Queen Elizabeth I that I'd make a fab addition to the Royal Family.
Torie lives in Southern California with her family and a houseful of pets who rule the roost.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025This book had me hooked within the first paragraph. This is my first read from Tori, but not my first from Brantwijin. Ms. Serrah has a way of using impeccable descriptions that draw your attention in and leave you breathless. From action to romance, this book offers so much and honestly, has left me wanting more.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2022Holy shiznet!!! What a gr8 story. This is not your typical vampire story and that's what makes it so gr8. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022Blood Born was not as exciting as I though it would be since it read as an enemy to lover’s romance. Sebastian was outspoken and determined whereas Kate seemed lost and confused in the beginning. It was just enough information to hold your interest while to twist and turns provides a well written ending. I loved reading Blood Born and looking forward to reading the 2nd book in the Brides of Carpathia series by Brantwijin and Torie James. . I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2022This book was a joy to read! It’s always great when a book has a good story, but when the writing style is also good it makes a book GREAT! This book checks those boxes and makes me eager for the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022A wonderful romp through the dark and creepy. Kate is a awesome heroine and the rest of the brides are interesting and engaging. A great read for a slow summer day.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2022The reader is drawn in right from the start, as we learn Kate survived the un-survivable and watch Sebastian try to connect the dots. It’s hard not to root for him to succeed, when he genuinely wants to understand what happened, and make sure Kate is safe. As we learn more about her, we realize she is also in the dark about what happened to her, and what she has become. I enjoyed this style of storytelling, with the reader and the characters slowly getting to see the big picture at the same time.
There was a lot to love about the relationship between Kate and Sebastian. In the beginning there was the expected friction and resistance, leading to some fun sexual tension and in places, page turning excitement for the reader. The more we learned about Kate and the path she is one, the more we realized we had left to learn.
The pace of the story was excellent. A steady build from the start, with enough tidbits and implications to keep the reader needing more. There were a few juicy surprises, and some fantastic steamy moments. Sebastian was quicker to accept the truth than some people would have been, but I believe this is due to two things. His experience as a detective providing the perfect backdrop to digest surprising facts… and the growing connection he developed with Kate. He progressed from needing answers and solving the case – to understanding Kate’s predicament because he cared about her.
I read the book from start to finish in only a couple of sessions, and can’t wait to delve into the next installment. I recommend this book to any urban fantasy and paranormal romance fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2022This Author was new to me but the book sounded like it could be a good read.
I'm so glad I took a chance. While there is steamy romance it isn't in the forefront, the conflict and self-realizations took priority. This gives you a chance to get to know the characters and really fall for them, root for them, feel for them.
This was a fun, well written book with great world building and interesting characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2022Our heroine is trying to escape her past and start over, but when that leads to murder with her as the prime suspect, she begins to wonder if starting over is the best thing to do.
This is book one of the series so no issues there.
This is an urban fantasy story. The story is well written and easy to read with a well developed setting that is quite intriguing. The characters are also well done and have considerable depth to them, some of which we get to discover in this book. The plot combines action and mystery is solid doses which keep things interesting. Overall, this was a lot of fun and I look forward to reading more in the series.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, What a Captivating Book!
This book grabbed my attention right from the start, I couldn't put it down. Such well developed characters. And the story is fast paced, it kept me up late turning page after page. I loved all the characters, but especially Kate and Sebastian, and Thorgi of course. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
