Breaking Away: A fake dating grumpy sunshine hockey romance Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,734 ratings

As the coach’s curvy daughter, I shouldn’t fake-date the rival team’s hot, tattooed, grumpy defenseman, even if I used to have a crush on him back in high school.

Dmitri Lokhov is the hottest, fastest, and grumpiest defenseman on the rink. No one’s seen him smile, let alone mutter more than a few broody words.

But when Dmitri loses his calm, knocking out our best player who happens to be my fiancé, everyone is shocked.

With a little liquid courage, I break into Dmitri’s cushy five-star hotel suite. After all, we knew each other as teenagers, so I need to give Mr. Grumpy Superstar a piece of my mind.

What I’m not supposed to learn is why he lost his cool in the first place. It was over a nasty comment about me.
Made by my fiancé.

I break the wedding off, but the best way to get revenge?
Fake date his rival.

Witty banter and revenge dating tropes = perfect evening read!
I cannot begin to describe how cute Breaking Away is! Perfect for any hockey romance reader. You have our amazing FMC, Kavi, paired with the intimidating (to everyone except her) Dmitri, and the connection can only be described as explosive. Tons of tension, innuendos, banter, spice- and the best yet? A classic "Who did this to you?" moment! This book is perfect if you are looking for an evening of witty remarks and revenge dating tropes. I cannot wait for what is yet to come in the series!

Kavi is the daughter of professional hockey coach, the fiancee of a professional hockey player but who is Kavi…really? She’s always spent her life doing things for others and now, she has no identity. When her fiance is beaten on ice one night, she visits Dmitri, the prayer who beat him, only to learn that her fiance is cheating on her and may have been for a long while. When her parents encourage her to take him back for the sake of the team and for her father’s reputation, she runs away, desperate to figure out a life for herself. The person to help her escape is none other than Dmitri.
I was drawn to Kavi. I don’t know if it’s that I myself am a first generation Asian female or that I understood her inability to find her place, but her experience so closely mirrored mine. Sookh wrote Kavi so well that I couldn’t deny knowing this young woman’s heart and her inability to reconcile what she should do to honor her family and her family’s reputation versus what she needs to do to find her own self worth. Learning that she is worth more meant taking a step away from what was expected and opening her door to doing what she needed rather than what others wanted. And in supporting her Dmitri was able up face his fear, his broken father’s expectations.

This is a slow burn rom-com. Kavi is a doormat, a people pleaser. She’s engaged to a cheating narcissist, her dad ignores her and her mom always wants her to conform. She puts everyone’s needs above hers. Her self esteem is in the toilet. It’s a romcom but there’s an underlying thread of sadness in the plot. The way Kavi talks about herself, thinks about herself is heartbreaking. If made me so sad. I want to give her a hug. Thankfully she finds a bit of her spine within the first 100 pages. And it’s enough to propel her towards Dimitri and a better future

Dimitri is like a wall, emotionless, hard to read. He’s very closed off except when it comes to Kavi. Then he’ll do anything for her, even things he’s uncomfortable doing. He has no friends, he’s isolated and he has trust issues. This is a slow burn but the steamy scenes are well written and well placed. The pacing of the story is perfect. I love the banter. These two talk to each other like adults, even tho there are times that Kavi irritates me when she constantly talks down about herself. But Dimitri believes in her and that’s what she needs to put herself first.

I didn’t think I’d love this story at first but wow, I was so wrong. Kavi is like a friend who lifts others up even when she’s feeling down. She and Dimitri are perfect together. They talk, fight, love and live their moments and it’s uplifting to see their HEA. Beautifully written with characters that I’ll be thinking about for a long time.

I found that, for some reason I am drawn to hockey romance books so this is once of the reasons I was drawn to this book. While there are times I'm kind of lost in the book, because I have no idea where the author was going at that moment. The storyline and character development alone is what made this a good book. While I feel the smut could have been better, it was still good. I felt myself getting frustrated at the right parts, loving the characters more and more. Most of the time I can predict what is going to happen in books. This one honestly had me questioning what was going to happen and that alone is amazing. The author has talent, and this book is worth the read because there is a part of the book in all honesty I'm going to take and apply to myself. Take the time to read it, it is worth it!

Okay at first I was annoyed with the LFC, because I can't stand when characters are so weakly portrayed, but thank goodness she didn't remain that way for very long and that there wasn't an unbelievable jump to full confidence. Both characters have gradual growth within the storyline both personal and romantically. I have so much I want to say, but I'll just say I really enjoyed this book.

Such a fun book!! The character development for our main character was fantastic and empowering to the ladies. Definitly what I needed after the heavy book I just read. Quite spicy too!

My heart man. I LOVED Dmitri Lokhov. The way that he called Kavi Princess, SWOON. He is perfect. He showed up for Kavi again and again when she needed someone just because. He cared so much for her and her happiness that I literally cried.
My heart hurt for both of them the their familial traumas. Kavi especially having parents pushing her back to someone that didn’t truly care about her.
The way the Wings took her in and made her one of them, defending and encouraging her.
This was truly a great read. They got the happily ever after they deserved.

Loved this story of Dmitri and Kavi. Classmates from High School days and meeting up later to get revenge on her ex. Who says revenge is sweet or in the case of Dmitri "Hot" according to Kavi. Fantastic read and left me wanting more. Great work, Sookh.

I picked up this book and I went in not knowing what to expect since Sookh Kaur is a new to me author! Reading the book had me laughing, crying, and cheering the main characters on! It was amazing to see that all the character relationships develop when Kavi comes into there lives and how she builds her own “family” away from her Seattle family. I can’t wait to read more of your books!!
