The Small Bronze Carriage on the Mantelpiece: A Gothic Ghost Story Kindle Edition
Moving their conversation to the home of the younger man, discussion soon switches to the small bronze carriage on his friend's mantelpiece.
It has a strange tale, one that goes all the way back to the 1750s and the tale of a young newlywed couple heading to Oxford to spend time with the new groom's extended family.

About the author

I was born in Swindon in the 1970s but currently living on the Cornish south coast.
A friend once asked if I considered writing a book in one genre without throwing two other genres into the same story. Until that point I hadn't realised just how much mashing up genres defined my work!
They were right of course. But what else can you expect from a scifi nerd with an archaeology degree?
These days, when not writing for businesses or fiction, I'm usually found somewhere in Cornwall with a camera attached to my face.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Carriage on the Mantlepiece took me back almost to my childhood, to a time when I'd devour stories like this one the same way a person might devour a delicious meal. Unsettling, but with such gentle prose, you're carried along without your heart jackhammering for fear of what comes next. I'm impressed by the way Mason captured the sound and cadence of speech as it might have been heard during the 19th century. It reminded me very much of M.R. James, and if that was the goal Mason was trying to reach, I'm happy to say he made it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent gothic ghost story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Small Bronze Carriage on the Mantelpiece by M. G, Mason is a perfect short read for a night when you are curled up with a warm fire cracking while the wind howls outside, and a glass of something tasty in your hand. This is an excellent Gothic ghost story, brim full of spooky vibes and written in a style that is reminiscent of a traditional Victorian tale in the best possible way without any of the wordiness which can sometimes be off putting to readers and with a conclusion that is comforting without sacrificing any of the spookiness that precedes it.
The story opens with a reunion between two old acquaintances on an Advent Sunday in the 1830s which results in them repairing one of their homes where the narrator of the story is captivated by a small bronze carriage on the mantelpiece and is fascinated to learn that there is a rather unusual story that accompanies it. It is this story that makes up most of the rest of the book, and it is impossible to say much more about it without spoiling the mystery it contains, a mystery which thoroughly captivated me while reading.
While the plot of this short story is excellent, I also have to compliment the author's technique. It is difficult to create such a wonderfully transportive and atmospheric story in such a short piece of fiction, but the author does it incredibly well here. I also particularly loved how the transitions between different point of view characters was handled, it really compelled me to keep reading.
This is a story I could easily see myself revisiting , in fact I am already imagining sitting down with it on Christmas Eve.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful ghost story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this immensely. It has the tone of a classic ghost story yet with the readability of a modern author. It's beautifully done, and I was drawn in from the first lines. I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absorbing and mysterious tale
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is one of those magical short stories that has a bit of everything. Fans of mystery, romance, historical fiction and even light horror should all find something to enjoy here.
I'm normally good at guessing how stories will play out but this is such an original tale that for the majority of it I really had no idea where it could be heading. The air of suspense, always a tricky thing to sustain well, is perfectly executed, and the setting's spooky atmosphere plus the year it takes place in gives the story a nice gothic vibe you don't often see in modern fiction. A touching and very different read
