This is book two of this series, told in dual first person POV and leaves you with a HEA. This story picks up where book one left off and was a great conclusion to this duet.

I loved the narrators of this books. They really did a great job at bringing this story and these characters to life. Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott kinda sounded like Charlie Hunnam and Jennifer Lawrence in some parts of this story. They did so good!

I absolutely loved how Maddox gave up everything he knew just be with Marcella and keep her safe and happy. I absolutely loved how Marcella stood up to her family and the surrounding society. She was determined to show them that she went from the princess to the Queen and would take what she wanted, how she wanted and didn’t care who she made upset as along as she had Maddox by her side. I can’t wait to read and listen to the rest of these books.

I received an advanced listeners copy via NextStep PR. I listened to this audiobook on Spotify. These thoughts and opinions are my own and left voluntarily after listening and reading (via Kindle Unlimited) for my own enjoyment.

Overall this was a very entertaining read. No complaints in that regard. I also get making Lucas daughter strong and powerful in a different way me to mirror her father.....but a scuzzy dirty biker gang dude......nah not workable for me. Those aren't just different types they are different species..... I think it would have been more believable for her to marry into the Russian mafia then to have this outcome...... Luca and Aria's daughter deserved an even more epic story..... and simple biker guy just isn't it...... As I said still a solid book and enjoyable read but this story and these characters deserved more...

I am going with five stars because of the ending. endings do it for me! I really enjoyed Maddox and Marcella’s story. It was very entertaining. All their trials and obstacles. How much Maddox seemed to give up for her always bothered me. But in the end he said: “It’s not a sacrifice if you are gifted with something in return, especially if said gift is worth so much more than what you had to begin with.” So I have come to grips with it and and I’m OK with it now. I am very interested in reading Amo‘s story and the older couples next.

I really love these books, but something that I really need to point out, in case Ms. Reilly’s editors somehow see this post, is that they excessively use the word “do” in the most unconventional, and genuinely wrong ways. I know that Ms. Reilly is not a native English speaker, but I suspect that maybe some of her editors are not either.

As an example, and sorry for any spoilers, but Luca says “he better do” when Marci explains that she thought that Maddox would continue to make her happy in the future. That doesn’t even make any sense. I just cherry picked this example since it was the point in the book when I decided I was done reading. It was already 90 something percent in, the plot hadn’t really gone anywhere for the most part, and I just decided I had enough. I have read her subsequent books, and I do not think that have this egregious error that is as pervasive as in this one, and I don’t remember the first in thus series, nor any of her other books, being guilty of the same mistakes, so I am not exactly sure what happened here.

I’m always a little skeptical of two part books but this one definitely hit the mark. I’m also not always impressed by generational series but this is excellent on its own and brings elements of the Born in Blood series as well. I loved seeing the later lives of so many characters as well as the continuation of events from the original series. WELL DONE!

Fans of Aria and Luca have long anticipated Marcella’s story. She was always revered as a princess, almost untouchable. And in By Sin I Rise readers learned that she is as fierce as her father and should be feared. It would take a strong man to not only love Marcella, but to stand up to her father. The question is Maddox the man for her. Can he love her the way she needs to be loved, but also be trusted and respected by the made men of the Famiglia. This book really drew attention to just how much how things look or are perceived play into the role of a mafia family, and just how much they are judged. Marcella may have been a wallflower that kowtowed to others' judgments of her, but with Maddox at her side she stands tall. And the men of her family follow suit.

I wasn’t sure the path that these two would take, and when book one ended I wasn’t surprised. I can see where they both might need some time….even if time apart hurts. I was hoping that in the end that it would make them stronger. In the end I pity the people that ever doubted Marcella and Maddox’s connection. The road that these two are on is not easy, and there are a lot of obstacles in their way, but love endures. And not only the love the two have for each other but the love of family. Luca was never my favorite Capo of Cora’s families, but I have a new found love and respect for his character. He has built a strong family that is built on trust and love. But he also allows those around him to be themselves which in turn makes the famiglia stronger.
Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. If you enjoy dark and gritty romance with a fair amount of angst then this should be your next read. However, this is book two and you will have to read book one to fully understand the characters and their experiences.

When Marcella Vitiello was born into the Famiglia she was born a princess, and she would become a Queen.

The book was absolutely amazing. I loved the way Maddox connected with the Vitiello family—it made the story so much more engaging. It also had me laughing more than I anticipated! There's one camping scene that really left an impression. Maddox's love is so deep and powerful; he would go to any lengths and make any sacrifice just to hold her close. Loved this!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Conclusion to the By Sin I Rise Duet!
Reviewed in Canada on December 16, 2021
The By Sin I Rise duet are the first two books in the Sins of the Fathers series by Cora Reilly. It is a spin-off series of the Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles and the Camorra Chronicles. This duet is about the mafia princess Marcella Vitiello and the MC Maddox White.

While I agree with many readers that this story did not need to be published as two different books, I do believe that Marcella and Maddox’s story was an excellent way to kick off the new series. The new generation may be bound by some rules but not to the extend their parents were, and after reading Maddox and Marcella’s story it is evident that the second generation will not have any issues breaking the rules.

Marcella’s kidnapping in By Sin I Rise Part I has left scars behind – emotional and physical ones. However, Marcella does not let the kidnapping dominate her life but rather rises like a phoenix from the ashes. She is standing up for herself, her choices, her needs and wants, her desires, and most importantly she does not let anyone define her worth. She has suffered but she is anything far from broken. I really enjoyed her character a lot. While others wanted Marcella to have made more sacrifices to be in this relationship with Maddox, I loved that Maddox was the one to sacrifice everything to be with the woman he loved. This was very different in comparison to the previous books. Maddox and Marcella are passionate and have a fire, and nothing will keep these two apart.
The highlight of the book for me was Maddox’s interactions with the Vitiello family and reading about old favorite characters. I really enjoyed reading about how Maddox slowly became part of the family.

This book is a must-read if you have read By Sin I Rise Part I and if you are a Cora Reilly fan. Such as with her other books, Cora Reilly will pull you into this mafia universe that she has created, and you will not want the book to end.

As usual, I cannot wait for next release!

"Everyone who’d come to see my fall would see me rising from the goddam ashes. I was my father’s daughter."
So this book starts right from where part one left off. Maddox goes in search for his mother and brother and also to meet the remaining members of his MC clan. Only now Maddox has to decide if he could join the Famiglia to be on Marcella's side trying to gain her family's approval or to return back to the only thing he's ever known- his MC lifestyle. Honestly I feel like the conflicts were resolved in the first book itself and there wasn't any need to extend the story in two parts but there were plenty of soft, tender moments between Maddox & Marcella and that seemed to make their connection more believable because they pretty much had that insta-love thing going on in book one which made me doubt their feelings for each other.
"Nothing and no one had ever made me want to be a better man more than seeing this otherworldly woman. Every sinner would become a saint just to be granted absolution from her."
But it's always a treat to meet the OG characters and this time, reading Aria's pov and getting some little scenes with Gianna, Isa & Matteo made this book much more funnier than it was. (because Matteo's humor tops everything else duh!) Also I can't wait for Amo's book because the way he hates vegetarians is so funny, I'm so excited to see what would happen when Greta comes along lol. Tbh, I feel like Marcella lost her appeal in this book. She constantly worried about what other people would think about her and was afraid of how her relationship with Maddox would be seen in a negative light. I wanted to see her actually work with the Famiglia but instead she constantly whined about how she needed the people's support and without them, she won't be respected and that was getting very repeatitive. I wanted to see her actually catching all the members of the MC who supported Earl but all she did was collecting expensive ear pieces and attending social events lol. I liked Maddox so much more in this part though. The guy had to leave everything that he's ever known to gain approval of a family and most importantly a man who finished an entire chapter of his MC along with his dad in front of him when he was just a five year old kid and when he was looked down upon by some members of the Famiglia, it made me feel so sad for him. Every character was thinking about how Maddox didn't deserve Marcella but I think it was the other way round because Marcella didn't seem to appreciate how he made so many sacrifices for her and I think she was being too selfish when she expected Maddox to let go off his resentment of Luca. That's all I've got to say about this book for now but I'm definitely excited for Cora's future releases especially Samuel & Emma's book.

I loved this ending to the duet of Marcella and Maddox. I habe to be honest I wasn't as excited about Marcella as I was with Maddox before starting the duet but I have to say I absolutely loved her character. She was such a strong, firece character. I can't wait to see how she will interact with Greta in the future.... I absolutely adored Maddox. In fact I think I liked the second book even more than the first one because it gave us so much time to see how their relationship became stronger and grew continuously.
    I can highly recommend it.
