Buried in the Past Kindle Edition

'A powerful novel, straddling both war and present day. Legat teaches us that the truth will eventually out.' Richard Foreman, author of Warsaw

1942, Nazi-occupied Poland.

Edek Kitzman was born to be a farmer but life changes when the Nazis occupy his country.

Edek joins the Resistance against the wishes of his older brother Bronek. He is treading a dangerous path. For every German soldier killed by the partisans, ten innocent villagers will lose their lives. But wholly submitting cannot be an option.

Szymon Kunic tries to be a good Jew. When his entire family are murdered by the Nazis, he wants to join the partisans to seek revenge, but Edek tells him this isn’t his war and not his country to defend. Kunic inhabits the forest, fighting his own war and avoiding capture.

Forty years later, a body dating back to WW2 is found in an unmarked grave at the back of the Kitzmans’ garden. Rumours abound in the village and fingers are pointed at the family.

Dorota Kitzman devotes herself to uncovering the identity of the corpse and clearing her family’s name. Her grandfather Bronek and his wife Sabine, who has just returned from Germany after years in exile, know something about the grave but neither is prepared to talk about it.

Dorota is determined to get to the truth, but the truth may be harder to live with than lies.

Although she writes in a wide range of genres,
Anna Legat is best known for her DI Gillian Marsh detective series and The Shires, her cosy murder mysteries. She lives near Bath.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good
Reviewed in Germany on December 12, 2023
This was really good!! WWII seen through Poland' fighting resistants' eyes and actions. Two timelines, both feeling real and both working very well (I usually dislike more than one timeline in a novel, but here, it is perfect!). A murder apparently committed during the war, a body discovered in the 1970's: why does nobody seem to be interested in clarifying this case..... I found this novel very interesting, entertaining as well, and truly a page turner!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new genre for Anna an excellent book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2023
I discovered Anna a while ago and have read all her crime novels, which are brilliant stories. Therefore I looked forward to a change in genre. Firstly this book is incredibly well researched, this must have been a major operation for Anna. However this ensures the authenticity of the story and you really get drawn in to the detail and the realism of life in that time. The book moves between the years of World War 2 and the 1980s & 1990s and the story is cleverly intertwined between the two periods. Set in Poland during both the Nazi and Russian occupations it follows families in a small farming village with both Jewish and German family members. It is a harrowing story with differing outcomes and tragedy striking some. There is an air of mystery throughout the WW2 part of the book relating to one family. The more recent part of the book picks up on this with the remaining and next generation of the families. The story moves you along after a skeleton is found. There are clues which are gradually followed up by the younger family members revealing a hidden secret. In these modern times life is far from easy with families suffering in difficult times. This is a very well written book and I thoroughly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classy World War 2 thriller set in occupied Poland
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2023
Buried in the Past is a captivating historical novel that delves into the lives of Edek Kitzman and Szymon Kunic in World War II Poland. Edek's transformation from a farmer to a partisan fighter is realised with skill and subtlety, while Szymon's quest for revenge and to understand his Jewish identify adds depth to the narrative.

The discovery of a body decades later in the Kitzmans' garden introduces an intriguing mystery that keeps readers engaged. Young Dorota Kitzman's determination to uncover the truth and clear her family's name adds an emotionally charged dimension to the story. Who lies in the mystery grave and what light does the body cast on past events?

Buried in the Past is an evocative and deeply researched tale of an often overlooked aspect of WWII, and Anna Legat deftly conjures the horrors of life in occupied Poland, caught between the retreating Nazis and Stalin's advancing Soviets. This is a highly recommended historical novel.

A World War 2 thriller that beautifully dovetails two generations, providing a mystery and, importantly, understanding across the years.
