To start on a positive note, By Hook or by Crook’s setting is a nice change of scenery for me and I would have loved more details in that regard. I also appreciate that the ending is unexpected and feel that it is a nice payoff for having read the story in its entirety.

I would love nothing better than to champion a new author, but this was a difficult read. The book was severely hampered by its sentence structures. The first half is hobbled by lengthy digressions which seem pretty common sense and unnecessary. There are instances of not having a strong enough grasp on English phraseology such as “the fingers in his toes” and “orange, pinhole-sized ball” (in reference to a lit cigarette), which sent the wrong visual. The second half of the book sees the sentences become a little clearer but still not very enjoyable to read.

Another gripe is that the antagonist, during an especially tense situation, takes the time to over-explain to the protagonist all of the details of the criminal web he wove. Very unrealistic. There are better ways to let the reader in on the underlying truths.

By Hook or by Crook has the beginnings of a good story but it would benefit from a better literary flow, characters that were a bit more fleshed out, and a more natural dialogue.

4.0 out of 5 stars pick it up, you won't regret

If you're feeling overwhelmed by deep philosophical discussions and excessive materialism, it's refreshing to delve into an edge-of-your-seat investigative thriller.
I found the main character, Shahid Ali, to be a compelling protagonist. The journey was packed with thrilling surprises, starting with his encounter with the sympathetic police officer, Vikram Singh, and culminating in a gripping series of events. The writing is concise and straightforward. Each character is vividly depicted within the intricately constructed storyline. It's rare to find such controlled storytelling from a first-time author.

The narrative revolves around Shahid's mission to unravel the mystery behind his journalist brother's vanishing. As he plunges deeper into the seedy underbelly of the city, he encounters corruption, peril, and deception obstructing his every step.

The high-speed, action-packed adventure is brimming with unforeseen developments to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Recommended for enthusiasts of thrillers and those who enjoy a good mystery. This adrenaline-fueled escapade is definitely worth the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars This refreshing read kept me engaged till the end

I'm not much of a fiction reader, but picked this one on the recommendation of a friend, and what a great read it turned out to be. Initial 15-20 pages felt a bit of drag to me, where Sinha has hardly progressed with the story and focusing more on the philosophical aspects which one won't expect in a fast-paced short crime thriller. But once the first act starts, there is no going back in the story. It progresses extremely fast and too many twists, turns, revelations are made in this short 170-page read.
The characters feel like real people, and places like tea-stall, bridge, all of them give the setting a look closer to real world. I really liked the conversations Vikram has with his partners whenever they are on a mission. The ending could've been a bit more detailed since it felt in a rush to conclude the story, but just when you think it can't get more complex, it puts you into another revelation.
I enjoyed the storytelling, impressive for a debut author. Although there are improvement pieces, but couldn't have guessed that this is Sinha's first work. Best part is there is no logical flaw in this story, which is quite common in any mystery story.
Overall, if you are looking for an interesting read which can be wrapped up over a weekend, and you're not looking for motivational or emotional overdose, this is a great pick for you. Go for it!

“By Hook or By Crook” is a pulse-pounding debut novel that plunges readers into the heart of a gripping mystery. Sinha weaves a tale of intrigue, corruption, and betrayal that keeps you guessing until the denouement.

The story follows Shahid’s quest to uncover the truth behind his journalist brother’s disappearance. As he delves deeper into the dark underbelly of the city, he finds corruption, danger, and deceit crippling his search at every turn.

With a deft hand, Sinha peels back layers of suspense, not allowing readers’ interest to wander even for a moment. The narrative explores themes like power, desire, and the vulnerability of human nature. Sinha’s striking storytelling abilities and compelling character development uplift the plot and add depth to the narrative. He aces in pulling readers into a world where nothing is as it seems, and everyone has something to hide.

Each character is meticulously crafted to fit into the convoluted plot puzzle and spike tension in an already taut narrative. The plotline is conceived in a remarkable way to nudge the readers to constantly guess and second-guess the characters’ motives and actions.

The fast-paced, action-packed ride has enough unexpected twists and turns to keep you buckled in your seat.

Recommended for thriller aficionados and mystery lovers. The high-octane, adrenaline-powered ride is definitely worth it.
