- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2025I could not put the book down. It took over. And that has not happened since I was a teenager reading Hunger Games and Maze Runner for the first time. The characters are built so well, and you get so attached to everyone, even some of the lesser characters have great moments. Jess is a great lead to follow through her POV. She is real and honest. She has flaws, but also strong points, and I love that she is not portrayed as being some perfect protagonist. If you loved the show, The 100, and had a major dystopian phase at some point in your life, this book is perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2023YA but doesn’t feel YA, the character thinks through her actions and choices in a way that’s refreshingly unlike most characters her age. I don’t love the romance triangle thing but I think it was handled quite well and in particular I liked that it was more a side story and not the overarching theme of the book.
Really well thought out Apoc novel. If I’m ever in a situation like Jess, I’d want to be exactly where she is and with friends like hers. They even think of the scenarios that would usually bug me because otherwise I have to trust the author is going to just ignore the major plot holes or the character walks right onto the issue that I’ve been fretting over for chapters.
Not a 5* rec as it’s missing that WOW factor to push it over the edge.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2024I absolutely loved Fortune Falls! This book had me hooked from the very first page, and I could not put it down. It’s like a perfect mix of survival drama, high-stakes tension, and those complicated teen emotions that feel so real. Lou Vane has created a world that feels both terrifying and incredibly relatable.
The story kicks off with Jess Maddox, a seventeen-year-old heading to a leadership camp, expecting it to change her life—and wow, it really does! When a deadly virus breaks out, Jess and a group of students end up trapped in the mountains, forced to survive on their own. The wilderness setting creates this super intense atmosphere, making you feel every bit of the danger they face. The survival aspects are gritty and real, but what really got me were the characters.
Jess is such a relatable protagonist. She’s strong and capable, but also vulnerable, especially when it comes to her feelings for two of her friends. This love triangle adds so much emotional depth to the story, but it’s not just about romance. Jess has to make tough choices, knowing they could mess with the fragile harmony of the group, and that adds this extra layer of tension to everything. The relationships between the characters are beautifully done, and honestly, I grew so attached to them. It felt like I was right there with them, sharing their fear, their hope, and their fight to survive.
The pacing is spot-on, with moments of heart-pounding action and quieter, more emotional scenes. And just when you think you know what’s coming next, Vane throws in twists that leave you shook. The survival stuff is gripping, but what really stands out is how much this book makes you care about the characters. You’re rooting for them, terrified for them, and desperate to know what happens next.

Great book !
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021Interesting and I finished it but at times it was a struggle. The story dragged and while the main characters were well developed others were just basic tropes. A lot of basic teen angst and 13 year old "ooh do you like me? Check yes or no"
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023It was a good read but cons felt it took a while for it get good. It is short read and recommended

The book starts slow. But it’s interesting and intriguing.
Many characters to get to know. Not all get a speaking role in each chapter, so it’s almost necessary to try and keep clear tabs on whom people are and the connections they may have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing & capturing read!
This book starts of intense, then turns cosy as you get to know the characters and you soon come to love them all. You will be thorn by the longing to keep reading, and the fear of loosing one of them. But ultimately, this book (and series) will have you hooked.
It really has everything- friendship, love, fun - but also thrill, fear and intensity.
In my opinion one of the best dystopian books out there!
Do yourself a favor and read this, you will not be disappointed!
