THE GRIPPING WWII ESPIONAGE THRILLER ABOUT SURVIVAL, TRUST AND A DEADLY BATTLE FOR THE TRUTH . . .
'Races along, with plenty of surprises' Times
February, 1944.
A bitter winter grips occupied France, where Marc Reece leads a circuit of British agents risking their lives in order to sabotage the German war effort from within.
But Reece has a second mission, secret even from his fellow agents - including Charlotte, the woman with whom he has ill-advisedly fallen in love. He must secure a document identifying a German spy at the heart of British intelligence. The fate of the Allied forces on D-Day is in his hands.
But when his circuit is ambushed - with fatal consequences - Reece realizes there may be a traitor in its ranks, putting everything they've been fighting for at risk.
Then Charlotte goes missing.
Is she in danger, or has Reece been betrayed by the only person he thought he could trust?
And with the clock ticking towards D-Day, can he find the truth before it's too late?
A gripping and atmospheric thriller inspired by true events, this is the story of a deadly game of espionage, destined to change the course of the most crucial battle in the Second World War.

About the author

Hi and welcome to my page. It's now January 2024 and I'm in a hotel in King's Lynn on the east coast of England (a very pretty town, you should visit) working on the sequel to The Turnglass, my most recent novel. I've been asked a few times how I came up with the idea for a 'tete-beche' novel - that's one with two entwined stories printed back-to-back and head-to-tail - and I've wracked my brains trying to answer the question.
All I can remember, though, is sitting in what we in London call a 'courtyard garden' - that's a patch of outdoor concrete about the area of a wardrobe, surrounded by barbed wire and police sirens - with some friends trying to explain it.
'It's a book that you can read from either direction and each story works on its own, but you only fully understand it when you read the other. It's about turning things upside down. Inversion and uncertainty. And secrets that are shaken out.'
Well, it's as good an answer as I can come up with. So take a look if it sounds intriguing. And stop by for my new novel. It's coming soon.
All the best
Gareth

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated spy thriller
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Pacey and extremely well written. For anyone who enjoys spy and/or WW2 fiction. As someone who used to live in Paris I found the scenes of the occupied city and its inhabitants very evocative; it’s unusual to find historical fiction with a real sense of place.

4.0 out of 5 stars World war 2 agents
This book was hard to get into. I was confused by the introduction of new names & how they fitted into the story. I needed to reread the first chapters several times but then got the idea & couldn’t stop reading, hence the 4 stars. There was a lot of suspense which kept me riveted. The writing was great & very descriptive.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
A lot of research must have gone into to make this story so riveting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping
Real edge of the seat stuff, with evocative writing that transports you back to France in 1944. Amidst all the lockdown gloom, this novel proved to be the perfect read: unputdownable escapism, backed by some solid research into the period. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very happy with my purchase A+++
Better than the average spy book but very irritating using metric measures for British personnel
