Fire and Ash: A Fate of Eyrinthia Novella Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 105 ratings

First the flames . . .

When Desfan Cassian, the future ruler of Mortise, skips his fifteenth birthday celebration so he can gamble in the slums, he knows his father won't be pleased. Then again, the serjan hasn’t been happy with him in years. And while Desfan anticipates a reprimand for his latest transgression, he doesn’t expect to be thrown out of the palace and exiled onto a patrol ship for the next year.

Then from the ashes . . .

Furious to be trapped on the same sea that stole his family four years ago, Desfan is fully prepared to hate his new life. After all, the Phoenix is run by a strict captain, and Desfan's annoying new bodyguard, Karim, is his constant shadow. But when Desfan learns that a group of dangerous pirates may have been behind the deaths of his mother and sisters, he's suddenly committed to hunting down the truth—no matter the risk.

He will rise.

Fire & Ash is a novella set in the world of the Royal Decoy series. While it is a prequel story and can be read as a standalone, it is best enjoyed after reading Royal Spy.***

Okay friends. Here's the most important question of today - have y'all read this series yet?! If not, what are you even doing with your life?? It is so good. SO GOOD, friends. I have loved every single one of these books, including Fire & Ash, which I just finished reading.

This little gem has everything I've come to love in these books - action, adventure, plot twists you didn't see coming, good guys you can't help but cheer for, villains that deserve a facer (or fifty).....what is there not to love here?

I absolutely loved getting to see a younger Desfan in this book. His experiences on board the Phoenix helped shaped him into the person we see in the main series, and I loved getting to see how that pivotal time in his life got started.

Also, Karim and Razan are the best. They are two of my favorite side characters in this series. I loved getting some of their backstory as well and seeing the beginning of their romance.

Moral of the story here is that y'all need this book in your lives. So if you haven't read it yet, that needs to change pronto. Read it. Love it. Thank me when you're done. You're welcome.

I adored Desfan in Royal Spy. He's a beautiful disaster. Witty, charming, and fun. Stubborn to a fault. But ultimately, he is just a young boy who lost family. And he's trying to find a way to cope with the grief. He makes all the wrong choices in doing so. But those lead his father to make one for him. One that changed his life for the better. One that gave him purpose.

I really enjoyed learning about Karim too. He is hilarious in Royal Spy. And Karim and Desfan together leave nothing but shenanigans in their wake. Karim is so serious and stoic. The two balance each other well.

If you haven't read any of the Eyrinthian novels by Ms Frost yet, you need to. She is a gifted story teller. She grabs your attention and then sucks you into her stories. By the time you are done reading, you've been hit with a roller coaster of emotions. And then you can't help but want to read more!

Her characters come to life on the pages. And you get to know them as if they were standing right next to you! This series is worth diving into! I cannot recommend it enough.

I don’t read a lot of novellas usually, but the first two books in this series are really good, and I wanted to learn more about Desfan, so I was happy to read his novella!

This story beautifully deals with grief and how it affects people. I was immediately drawn into the story and couldn’t put it down! I also desperately wanted to give Desfan a hug, because he needed one.

To balance everything out, there are some great humorous moments, sarcastic lines, and banter between Desfan and Karim! I loved seeing the development of their friendship.

I highly recommend reading this, especially if you’ve read the first two books! In terms of length, it’s actually as long as some of the shorter novels I’ve read, though it’s not that long compared to the length of the books in the series. I thought it was just right, and I’m so glad I read it!

I adored this novella in the Fate of Eyrinthia series. Best read after Royal Spy when we are introduced to Desfan. This novella is from Desfan’s perspective and takes place a few years after a tragedy steals the life of his mother and sisters. He is 15 years old and his life is spiraling out of control: gambling, drinking, drugs, fights. He is useless and feels worthless and then to top it all off his father sends him away. Feeling unloved and damaged Desfan does not take to his new life at sea - and particularly dislikes his new shadow, aka Karim his serious, young bodyguard.

This novella gives us the backstory that all us readers were DYING to know as we were introduced in Royal Spy to an audacious, playful prince and his loyal, stoic bodyguard.

Desfan was just as cheeky, reckless and mischievous at age 15 as when we meet him in Royal Spy. Read RS first! Well, actually, read Royal Decoy first first then RS then F&A.

I read this novella after reading the Fate of Erinthia series. I'm glad I did. Heather does such an amazing job with character development that this novella isn't necessary (because I already feel like I know Desfan and Karim well enough), but I still found this enlightening. I did get an even better understanding of what shaped Desfan and how his friendship with Karim began. Loved it!

This backstory of one of Eyrinthia's leading characters is a wonderful little adventure that brings such depth and fullness, to not only the character and the stories, but the entire world the author is creating. Bravo!

It was so fun to get a peak into Desfans past! And to see how he and Karim became so close! You get bits of it when you read Royal Spy but this really dives into the details. And the writing is so good it just sucks you in and when it's over, you wish there was more!
