"In The Certainty of Chance, Jacquelyn Middleton gives readers a snowy, festive romance that truly captures the magic of London at the holidays." -- Entertainment Weekly's Best Holiday Romances of 2021

Amazon #1 BEST SELLER - British Contemporary Literature

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT DECEMBER…

Madeleine Joy is feeling more meh than merry. When an Icelandic volcano erupts six days before Christmas, hazardous ash congests European airspace, canceling flights indefinitely—including the thirtysomething's connection to Paris. Stranded alone in London, separated from her sister, and with the devastating one-year anniversary of her best friend’s tragic death just days away, Madeleine has never felt less festive. And as if things couldn’t get worse, the cute guy driving the cab to her hotel won’t shut up about carolers and tinsel…

Julian Halliwell is one of life’s sunny optimists. A former music journalist, he’s embraced his love for London by starting his own black cab business, enthusiastically ferrying passengers from one historic landmark to another. But life hasn’t always been easy for Julian. Having navigated several life-changing setbacks including a cruel betrayal by his former fiancée, Julian remains hopeful that he’ll meet somebody kind, who shares his love of music, his corgi named Winnie, and of course, the magic of Christmas time in London.

Despite being an unlikely match, fate seems determined to throw them together. But can the grieving American find joy again in a world where the lights have all but dimmed?

From Jacquelyn Middleton, the award-winning author of UNTIL THE LAST STAR FADES, comes a heartwarming Christmas story of love, loss, serendipity, and the belief that what’s meant for you won’t pass you by.

From the Author

The Certainty of Chance is a contemporary romance. Madeleine and Julian's story is a standalone that takes place in the same 'world' as my four previous books. There are laugh-out-loud moments along with the swoony, sexy stuff, but this book is NOT a rom-com.

Content note (may contain spoilers): This novel contains coarse language, closed-door love scenes, an own voices depiction of disenfranchised grief, unexpected death of a loved one (backstory), cheating partner (backstory), therapy, loved-up mentions of Love Actually and The Holiday, zero mentions of any pandemics...and lots and lots of London at Christmas.

Heartwarming story about grief and understanding
The Certainty Of Chance absolutely warmed my heart. It brought out the magic of the holidays and the importance of finding someone who understands you. Madeline and Julian are so sweet together and by the end of the book I really felt like I knew them. The way they understood each other’s grief in a way no one else could made them a perfect match and so proved that nobody grieves in the same way. This book was so heartwarming while still hitting upon the heavier points of grief but it balanced it so well.

“‘Our brains are wired to solve mysteries and random things, to figure out why tragic situations occur in the hopes they won’t happen again. If we can just find a cause or someone to blame—even if it’s ourselves—we’ll find the why and be able to make sense of it. But sometimes there is no why, and the kindest thing we can do is let ourselves off the hook for events that are beyond our control. As much as it hurts to accept, sometimes horrible things just happen and there is no reason or blame.’”

“‘Unfortunately, the holidays don’t stop for heartache.’”
The Certainty of Chance (2021) by Jacquelyn Middleton

    * * *

Charm and chance collide in this feel-good, yet weighty work, perfect for the holiday season. Jacquelyn Middleton is back with her fifth novel, another contemporary romance novel set the in the same world as her other works but still a stand-alone tale full of love and fear, joy and grief, mental health and magical decisions. From cabs to corgis, cakes to crackers, Christmas to crisp sandwiches, The Certainty of Chance has it all. What Middleton always excels at doing is crafting a well-rounded, immersive setting for her works. It’s clear she does her research and fully visualizes each milieu before drawing her characters into it. Not only will The Certainty of Chance make you want to book a flight to London: it’ll make you want to traipse through the city during the holidays, visiting the locations and seeing the sights noted on nearly every page of this super-festive novel. Also, this novel will make you hungry (for food! For life! For love! For London!). You have been warned.

Madeleine Joy is an American en route to Paris but stuck in London just before Christmas, thanks to a volcanic eruption in Iceland that sends debris into Europe’s airspace, making airline travel impossible. Madeleine looks forward to Christmas with her movie star sister (who’ll be familiar if you know Middleton’s other books), but, of course, things aren’t meant to be, thanks to Mother Nature. Maddie’s also nursing a broken heart, following the death of her best friend (and the one-year anniversary is around the corner). Although initially feeling more Scrooge than Santa, Madeleine’s approach to her lonely London layover changes when she meets an optimistic cabbie whose investment in music (Maddie makes playlists) and writing (both are working on books) is not only promising but, even more, is akin to a Christmas miracle.

Julian Halliwell is a Londoner full of life, curiosity, and a tiny apartment packed with music albums. He’s also a black cab driver who thrives on helping others explore the city he loves, is a loyal and beloved friend, and is “dad” to Winnie the corgi. Like Madeleine, this thirty-something’s past hasn’t been easy: loss, betrayal, and a broken engagement haunt him. But both Madeleine and Julian, misunderstood in their griefs and desires, find themselves drawn to one another in this sugar-plum-sweet and delightful wintry tale.

The Certainty of Chance is not, however, a typical romance. As with her other works, Middleton is invested in showcasing imperfect characters who grieve, worry about their careers, and seek creative outlets. A mental-health advocate, Middleton’s characters (male and female alike) go to therapy, speak openly about their struggles, and are allowed to have bad days. I also appreciate that these are 30-somethings recharging themselves, reexamining their careers, and finally seeking the satisfaction (in jobs, artistic outlets, and love) about which they’ve long-ruminated. Yet, they are quirky, playful, and invested in pop culture. They contain, in short, full personalities and a robustness that makes them feel familiar. It’s as if Julian will drive his black cab straight out of the novel and down the road before us.

All in all, this warm and winning holiday romance about losses and gains and learning to accept that what life hands you is never “wrong” is a perfect way to usher in the holidays, whether you’re an armchair traveler or looking forward to a journey of your own.

I adored the majority of this book! The descriptions of London sights at Christmas were nothing short of amazing. Middleton's ability to pull you into her settings is phenomenal.

The characters were a treat, especially the two leads, Madeleine and Julian. Julian, in particular, was wonderful. Male leads who are sweet, and who allow themselves to be seen in all their dorky and vulnerable glory are my favorite.

There were really just two things that kept this from being a 5 star read for me. One, the bigger one, was the way that Maddie's grief affected her life in ways that just leaned towards melodramatic. As the story is sure to pound home, we all grieve in our own ways. I have had close online friendships with people for 25 years (I'm old, haha), and I did like how this allowed for those friendships to be seen as meaningful. That said, Maddie's grief seemed to be more about Maddie's projections of what their friendship could have been. They never met in person, and that *does* affect the style of friendship. Not the depth, but the interactions. I felt that Kellie was treated as an IRL friend for Maddie, which wasn't quite right. Maddie didn't lament being unable to text or email or share memes. She was torn up over seeing a pair of best friends who had vacation memories together, over people she knew at work having a problem with Maddie wallowing in grief months later. Online friendships are special, but they are also very different than the relationships you have with people who are involved in your life. I struggled to really sympathize with her over her grief being all-encompassing.

This also bled into the romance quite a lot, at times overshadowing it. You wonder if Julian is really who Maddie wants, or if her motivations are still wrapped up in Kellie. This made it more difficult to get lost in the romance, or feel their chemistry.

Which brings me to the other thing that brought it down a bit: It is closed-door, fade to black. There is a warning of that, but that didn't stop me from wanting that extra bit of spice. Since there was so much grief, I think showing the sexual chemistry more would have really gone a long way. It would have ramped up the positive emotions and really sold them falling in love.

All in all, this was a great read, though, and got me into the Christmas spirit despite it being nearly Summer!

This book grabbed me from the start, the characters were extremely likeable without being all sugary sweet.
The description of London at Christmas has given me serious wanderlust. The musical references had me on a nostalgia trip, the food, the pub quiz, everything felt very real. You can tell this writer researches every aspect thoroughly. She’s also not afraid to tackle uncomfortable subjects, grief, depression and anxiety but does so with realism and compassion. The side characters are fantastic, there is humour and you find yourself rooting for the principal characters.
The story grew at the right pace, always making me want to continue to the next chapter.

This book needs to be on your Christmas TBR!!!!! The Certainty of Chance is ABSOLUTELY my favourite book written by Jacquelyn and it’s her first published Christmas book!!!!

My favourite part of this book is how much of Jackie I can see in it. Centred around grief and the way it shapes our lives after it hits, it is a true love story to those we have lost. Jackie handles grief with such care and grace, and I think it will be a true eye opener for some who do not understand the impact grief has and how it sustains.

I LOVE the character of Madeleine. She is so personable, nerdy in the best ways, and it is fun seeing some growth and development in her as the story progresses. Julian is the cutest male lead. He seems quirky and adorable, and has such a kind heart. And, as per usual, my favourite character in Jackie’s books is always the setting and London does not disappoint in this one!!!

If you are looking for some Christmas love that will make your heart swell, READ THIS BOOK. Now you’ll have to excuse me. I’m off to brush up on my knowledge for the pub quiz, watch The Holiday for the umpteenth time, search corgi pictures I can squeal over, and find a felt squirrel!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Christmas in London
Reviewed in France on October 3, 2021
Madeleine was on her way to Paris for Christmas to meet up with her sister but a cloud of vulcanic ashes makes it impossible for planes to take off and so, for her to leave London. Alone and thinking about the one-year anniversary of her friend's death, she meets Julian, a cab driver, who's gonna be the one person keeping her company during this hard time and taking her all across London.

As a Christmas romance lover, I couldn't wait to read this book! I enjoy every bit of Madeleine and Julian's journey.

Just imagine being in a cab with a charming British driver that takes you around the British capital to do some sightseeing, chatting about historical and architectural heritage of London's most famous places and buildings or even doing Christmas shopping and meeting his closest friends in a pub! Dreamy right?! But grief gets in the way... This topic is one of the most important elements of the novel and it was really well brought and Jacquelyn Middleton dealt with this difficult and touchy subject admirably. "Grieving is a deeply personal thing."

London is a city I'm dying to see again, mostly during Christmas. I was transported there without moving from my bed. The atmosphere described by all the description as we wander in the streets with the characters is magical. I learnt and discovered a bunch of stuff with the depiction made of the monuments and with some historical facts or cultural allusions, it was so enchanting.

So if you're like me and you love Christmas romances, London, caring men (please somebody gets me a Julian!), then this book's for you! I'm sure you'll enjoy it too, especially if you get comfortable with your favorite blanket, a cup of hot cocoa and a lit wood stove plus your favorite Christmas playlist!
