4.0 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

A grumpy hotel guest. A mysterious thief. A limitless multiverse of possibilities.

Three years after the death of his wife and son, George Webber checks into Le Petit Monde in London to spend his last night on Earth in luxury. Everything that matters to him is gone, save for what’s in the briefcase he keeps clutched at his side. But when that briefcase is stolen, George discovers there are a great many more worlds than his own. If he wants it back, he’ll have to postpone checking out and travel farther than he ever thought possible.

How about Victorian London, the frontlines of WW1 and deepest, darkest Peru for starters?

Checking Out is the first book in the series of the same name. If you like sarcasm, silliness and the space-time continuum, then you’ll love this enchanting and peculiar sci-fi fantasy from T.W.M. Ashford.

I'm already a huge fan of anything having to do with time travel, and heavy Sci-Fi just isn't my game. I decided to read Tom's book because I love a mix between fantastical, relatable and eye-opening scenarios. The ending was great, and I think that the not-predictable plotline made me a fan. I'm not going to give it away, but this story covers some cool scenarios. Tom has a very descriptive, poignant and very visual style of writing, and I found myself thinking "Hey, that is an extremely cool way of describing that situation! I wish I thought of that!"
Kind of dark-humored, which adds a great feel to the story. You can't just have heaviness in the plot without ANY humor! It's a pretty burdensome subject matter, and having a kick of sarcasm here and there is what makes for great writing. I'm recommending his book to my friends, along with his other novels.
My family have always been huge readers, anything and everything, and We've been through a ton of books. I've also hated a lot of story lines. So, I have to say it is refreshing to find a book that you really, really like!
    My only problem with it?
    It's too short!

I love time travel and for me this was a fun and interesting book to read, although the main character was profoundly unhappy after the untimely death of his wife and young son. The fun part was in all the doors that opened and closed.
Isn't that what they say: When one door closes another one opens? That was sure a huge part of this interesting tale.
The only reason I give it a four star is because I got bored several times. The author is very descriptive, but for me sometimes a bit too much. I would have liked to see it speed up a bit, especially towards the end.
Very well done, T.W.M. Ashford. I look forward to your next book.

What a great story-Checking Out, by T.W.M. Ashford, is a romp through space and time, following the woes of a very troubled but determined protaganist who is hell bent on his evening's plans. The paradoxes of time travel are touched on, as well as the general confusion unleashed when your concierge has the keys to the universe. Join the romp-pick up a copy and discover the adventure within. A well crafted light read that brings what truly matters to the forefront of your attention. Well done.

    Checking out by Tom Ashford.
A good read. I wasn't sure about George character. I didn't know if I liked him or not. Lots of twist in this book. I'm curious as to what will happen next. 4*.

4.0 out of 5 stars not quite Douglas Adams but getting there!

it's a great read but maybe has a bit too much in it, the Peruvian jungles might have been a step too far for me but it is fun. I knew who the bad guy was before the reveal but that may just be because I've read so many sci-fi\fantasy\thriller books. I like the style of the writing and the little details that bring it to life and the call out to a previous book I'd read by the author was a brilliant touch, maybe there were other easter eggs but I'll have to read some more of the authors books to find out.....which I will do soon.
