The limits of that power are all too real
At the edge of their reach, even they cannot save everyone…
Faced with the terror-inspiring might of the reawakened Reezh Kazh, the Church of the Nine that once ruled hundreds of stars, the people of the Dual Republics of Chimera have asked Mars and humanity for protection.
For now, the Protectorate is united behind their Mage-Queen. Ambassador Connor O’Hannagain and Mage-Captain Roslyn Chambers are charged to do everything they can—but the reality is grim.
The Protectorate is too far away. The Chimera System cannot be saved… but the Chimeran people might be. Even as every warship Mars can spare is rushed forward to their new ally, massive fleets of transports are assembled to carry as many people to safety as possible.
The magical power of Mars can save some of Chimera’s people, human and reezh alike, but if steel and magic cannot guard the innocent, Chambers, O’Hannagain and others all face a single harsh question:
When Chimera falls, who stays behind?

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025I've been a huge fan of Starship's Mage and have enjoyed all the character development through out all the books. Chimera’s Fall is another great example of Glynn Stewart’s ability to create likeable characters that you want to succeed, while at the same time setting up situations where you’re not always sure they will. I love how well paced his work’s are, they keep you interested and excited, while still taking the time to make sure you really know the characters, and what drives them. All in all if you’ve been enjoying the Starship’s Mage series like I have you will enjoy this book. If you haven’t ready any of the series, I envy you, as you now have a great series to work your way through.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2025ARC Reader: There are a lot of moving parts in Chimera's Fall, with each of our favorite characters from across the series getting at least a line or two, and another old friend gets her own, primary voice. (There are a lot of primary voices in this one.) The action and intrigue is wonderful, although it is quite clear throughout the book—as one might suspect from its title—that the characters and worlds are being set up for what is to come. The word that constantly came to my mind was "logistics," in that there's a lot of—surprisingly interesting and as always with Stewart well-written—logistics involved in moving people, gear and ships. And, there's a lot of logistics in getting those people, gear and ships in place for what is to come.
I enjoyed the read and am looking forward to the next installment.
As always, I heartily recommend others read Stewart's work. If you're looking to dive into the universe, then I'd start with Starship's Mage, the first book. Or, if you're looking to pick up with the more recent threads, you can start with Chimera's Star, the fourteenth book, and make your way here.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025Good but not as great as so many of the other books in this series. Chimera's Fall is something of a second act, where it's setting up characters and events for a conclusion. Still, I love this series and can't wait for the next book.
This novel mostly centers around regular characters Mage-Captain Rosalyn Chambers and Princess Mage-Admiral Jane Alexander. It's nice to have Alexander return to an active spot in the series, as she's been on the fringes now for quite a while. Rounding out the list of original characters, we also see a bit of Mage-Queen Kiera Alexander and her "Royal Boyfriend" Barry Carpentier. Ambassador Connor O’Hannagain is back, as well as a potential future central character, Commander Moran Miyajima, who's creeping into the story in much the same way that Chambers did back in the day when she replaced Damien Montgomery as the primary protagonist after he'd been promoted too far to be interesting. Will we see the same thing happen to Chambers? I wonder.
At the end of the previous novel, due to human actions the planet Chimera had come to the attention of the Reezh Kazh, the ancient alien empire that created human mages and which played a part in many of the previous novels as an unknown but looming threat to humanity. The Reezh sent an attack force to Chimera, which was rebuffed, but were expected to return in force. And we know from scouting missions that they have many, many more ships than the human kingdom.
This novel starts off with planning for the evacuation of the full population of Chimera, some 2.1 billion humans and reezh. Even with all the resources at their disposal, this effort would take years, so they know they won't get everyone. The initial plan is to start the evacuation and also send as many military ships as possible to defend the system while the evacuation is underway. As past readers know, military ships can move at something like 16 light years per day, so gathering the fleet takes weeks, and getting to Chimera takes several more.
The rest of the story is about the evacuation from and battles at Chimera. I won't say more, but the title of the novel is a spoiler in and of itself.
As I wrote at the beginning, there isn't much in the way of climax or conclusion in this book. We get some interesting space battles, and I enjoyed the continuing story of Rosalyn Chambers. But Chimera's Fall essentially just sets up for the next novel in the series.
Recommended for fans. Not recommended as a first read for this series. I give it 4/5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025Admiral Jane Alexander, Mage Captain Roselyn and the dual citizenry of Chimera work to evacuate as much of the civilian population as they can before their enemies destroy them all. The interplanetary coordination and multicultural communications takes up a good portion of the first half. Then the space battles are intricately displayed including the magic used for both offense and defence. A good nail biter to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025This is, as the title says, the story of a truly heroic effort to defend the undefendable. As real as a punch in the nose, this yarn details the impossible task of evacuating a planetary population of billions at risk, and how the Protectorate faces Chimera's defense in the face of humungous fleets of genocidal aliens. Tense, detailed, and hard to put down. And the end is not yet!
I am reminded of a long-ago yarn entitled "One in Three Hundred" a novel of the problem of evacuating a portion of Earth's population. Great for it's time, but this novel tops it in spades. Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2025As the latest installment of a very long running series, this book requires some prior knowledge of the situations and individuals described, but for those who have the background it is a excellent lead in to what must come. The single world of Chimera seemingly had little or no chance to stand before an ancient and immense threat, but yet new friends (and old enemies) provide some possibilities and immediate help. This future still looks dire, but perhaps not as cut and dried as before. Excellent installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2025I have been following this storyline since the beginning. This new addition is fantastic. My wife complained that I was ignoring her while reading.
Can't wait for Summer for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025Glynn moves the story forward in another well-written space opera. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series! 😀

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy and exciting read
Having just read The Protectors of Sol series, I can say that this is the better series. Stewart has shown us he can fling tonnage and guns across the inky black of space; this series shows interpersonal relationships alongside and inside the huge ships.
I do question his decision to maroon his main character planet side, but then, I suppose next book, she’ll do what no one else has ever done … earn a fourth medal of valour. Given her propensity of jumping in where needed in desperate times, I imagine there will be plenty of chances for her to throw herself in the line of fire and emerge victorious.
This is an easy series to read. There are no messy relationships to deal with, everyone seems to be as practical as the next person, and there’s always a chain of command. Instead of feeling cut and dried or missing something, the writing feels true to the nature of the milieu.
Excellent book. Waiting now for July and book 17.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting continuation of the series
I was delighted to receive an advance readers copy of this book.
I love this authors work and always buy them on release date, but it is extra special to get them a little early.
I wish I could read the authors mind and see where this series would end I enjoy it that much.
The characters all have depth and he's not afraid to kill off some of the people you want to invest in.
The story has a great pace and sets us up for hopefully at least a few more great novels.
Anyone who's read the previous books will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable
Slow start but building to an action packed finish. So much happening. Not sure how the cover relates to the story?

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliffhanger
Another story in the Starship's Mage universe. The universe continues to grow with new people and new politics. I enjoy having protagonists with honor and morality. Which doesn't mean there is no personal growth, but that comes from externalities which make it hard to live up to one's standards. Stewart has a knack of creating different universes with different stories, I can't literally buy in to all of them but I'm with this one to its end.
(I did have an ARC of this title but still own all the Starship's Mage books.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation
Sixteen books into this series, and Glynn Stewart continues to deliver excellent new installments.
Focus remains on Chimera and it's evacuation. It's good to see some of the characters make mistakes: no one is perfect!
Looking forward to "The Lies Arcana" which, with everything else we know by this point, is a very intriguing title...
