About the author

Fiona McPherson has a PhD in cognitive psychology, from the internationally-regarded Psychology Department at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She has spent the decades since that achievement following the research into how the human brain thinks and learns and remembers, and communicating that knowledge and its practical implications to a lay audience. She has done this through her long-running and extensive websites (www.memory-key.com and www.mempowered.com), and her books. Her guiding principle is that people are more likely to use effective strategies if they understand how and why they work, and know precisely when and when not to use them.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe book shows common Indo-European roots of many words in modern European languages. There are some small errors (for example, the Russian word "zena" means "wife", not "woman"; the word for woman is "zenshchina"), but the book is altogether interesting and informative, and a really nice read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs others have noted, this is not a scholarly work, but maybe that is an advantage. I bought it on a whim, and I've been enjoying it. So many linguistics books are filled with jargon understood only by those within the linguistics community (and even then there is disagreement) so I was glad to find none of that here.
Somebody else asked why there was no Armenian; I think the author mentions this in the introductory paragraph. I'm not even sure why Armenian is considered Indo-European and not its own language group. As for me, I would have liked to have seen more Persian, although the author admits that is due to her own lack of depth on that topic. However, almost every word I've encountered that has a Persian entry also has a Pashto entry and I find that very interesting.

It gives plenty of examples and breaks them down by specific activity or noun type. It’s a great quick reference guide for more advanced students a a reminder for us older folk out of academia.

3.0 out of 5 stars touffu MAIS...

5.0 out of 5 stars Buen diccionario de cognados del protoindoeuropeo
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEl diccionario tiene una introducción que aclara los principales tópicos para enteder el alcance del diccionario y utilizarlo. Solo le hecho en falta que no incluya vocabulario procedente del gótico, idioma que estudio.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant compilation!
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseExactly what it says on the tin - it's comprehensive. Contains examples from every Indo-European language, extremely detailed, just incredible. You can tell a PhD wrote it, but as they state in the book, it's not necessarily meant to be academic in nature. It's largely a form of science communication, and that's what I was looking for!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIn essence a collection of wiktionary entries, compiled and curated by a linguistics doctoral student. By all accounts this is presented as an amateurish endeavour, driven by an academical zeal. It would be easy to dismiss were it not that the actual compilation and curation makes it a worthwhile feature that is otherwise unavailable online (wiktionary or otherwise). The content itself is indeed quite interesting even if some of the more obscure branches of the indo-european tree are lightly treaded, due to their unfamiliarity to the author. In all, a worthwhile contribution that will be of interest to amateur, academical and professional researchers.
