Cold Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 159 ratings

The near future is a world in which scientists and their AI got it wrong.

Rising temperatures have caused fires that burned landmasses, and the ash from these fires block out the sun. The resulting cold is extreme, like a nuclear winter, and was a mass extinction event for human beings the world over. Electricity grids, communications and services all failed. Societies collapsed. Humanity is reduced to small groups of survivors, scraping by however they can.

Resources are scarce, and bands of survivors resort to violence to obtain enough food and fuel to survive.

A man and his family group have survived the cruel winter by hiding in a house in Surrey, but when a roaming gang starts to ravage the area, they are forced to run. As they flee to safety, the cohesion and tolerance that had kept them going for so long starts to fracture…

From the author

Cold was written in lockdown when I was unable to perform my usual role of helping clients with the energy transition. Like many of us, I had more time to reflect on things and assumptions about myself and the world were challenged. I would wake up, grab a coffee, and write 500 words a day, and I took pieces from my past to build a plausible future. As a geologist I have seen the impact of human vs environment at the sharp end, and I wanted to paint a picture of a fictional survival story, set locally, set in a future that could easily happen.

'Cold' is Jim Pearce’s debut novel, though he has written non-fiction before. He’s been an oil driller in Saudi and Venezuela and a geologist in a gold mine in Ghana. Now he helps energy clients try to be more sustainable. He enjoys writing first thing in the morning at home in Surrey or enjoying the views in the south of France. He likes to transport readers to unexpected places where survival is a challenge and friendships tend to triumph despite individuals’ flaws. He is married with three boys.

This is an amazing alternative future. It is a cry to rethink things that we do now. The planet tipped to a nuclear winter. A few humans left to try to live. I enjoyed it!

This was a good first effort by this author. Fresh idea for the post-apocalyptic genre. It was a quick read.

It keeps you on tenterhooks from start to finish! It is scary to think that the future described in this book is a plausible real-life future...
Will keep an eye out for more books from Jim!

A fantastic debut into the world of book publishing. Does the author have a vivid imagination or is this what the future of the world looks like? I scratched my head thinking about this numerous times! Much of this stuff is happening in our world today – we really need to wake up before this actually happens.

Set in England, it is a dramatic portrayal of life in a frozen world and the challenges that ensue. I can’t imagine the world becoming a frozen tundra – and being a survivor – no thank you. It is a relatively fast paced book. As a geologist, the author was able to add another layer of believability to the story. An engaging book that keeps the pages turning!

Really enjoyed this fast paced alternative post apocalyptic story. Engaging characters and familiar places, make this a thrilling read. What happened to Matt, Richard and Eva's baby and were there others in the mountaibs? I guess we will find out in book 2!!

This story started out fine, a somewhat plausible apocalyptic scenario. Climate change has caused so many out of control wildfires that a thick layer of ash has blanketed the planet and caused a deep freeze. You get caught up in the action as the group is fleeing a murderous gang. As the story continues situations start to get more implausible and the last third of the book is downright ridiculous. I only finished it to see how stupid the ending would be. I realize this is a debut novel but the author could benefit from some writing classes in composition and continuity. When you write your characters into a difficult situation make sure you work out an escape based in the reality ofTHEIR world not your world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read with good pace and a modern theme to the plot

I enjoy thrillers and fast pace books especially when travelling. Jim sets out a modern plot and the book races along developing both the characters and themes in a way which grabs your attention. The environmental message is clear but isn't overplayed with the characters taking centre stage. As a first novel it is a great read and I hope that there is more to come.

I usually go for audiobooks these days but came across this novel and thought I’d give it a try… so glad I did!
A fresh take on an all too possible future, but a rollicking ride at the same time. Keeps the pages turning and you don’t know what’s coming next. The author has clearly put a lot of himself into it and feels very personal. Looking forward to whatever he writes next.

I really enjoyed reading this book. As a Debut it kept my attention span on high alert and I read it through quite quickly. A different take on the usual apocalyptic/catastrophe books and very believable.
I hope to read more from this Author.
