Coldwake Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

A great deep wound slashed across her back from shoulder to thigh — a wound that Timoth could not understand… When he looked past the agony and the deadness, he saw that this woman was not a stranger after all.

When frontier teens Timoth and Martoth stumble upon a mysterious corpse, their search for answers leads them from their rural backwater into a world still reeling from the loss of Earth.

As Martoth grapples with her emerging links to the enigmatic and powerful Vigil, will Timoth’s growing awareness of his strange powers expand their world or put everyone they know in danger?

They must find allies in a labyrinth of psychics, zealots and dissidents, and face zombie-like foes and a reality-warping chaos that threatens to wreck the world they’re entering even as they discover it.

Set in a mesmerising future of visions, disembodied minds, possession and higher planes of existence, Coldwake interweaves glimpses from 1930s Switzerland with the struggles of a post-Earth humanity, and suggests that the universe has never been quite what we thought.

Inspired by the likes of Julian May's Pliocene Exiles and M. John Harrison's Kefahuchi Tract, indulging in the frontier spirit of Firefly and the timeless mysticism of Star Wars, Coldwake isn’t ultimately like any of them. But if you enjoy that sort of thing, maybe you should embark on this odyssey across time, space, and the human spirit.

GJ Hawkins is the writing pseudonym of @gmorpheme who has been inhabiting alternative realities for some time. In one of these he writes fiction. He is, up to the mid 2020s at least, a natural biological human intelligence, though at least one body part has been upgraded with artificial composites.

He was once a proud member of Rico Erosion and the Love Explosion and The Under 5s (miss you Rich), but today most people only see his guitars in the background of zoom calls. He once built a bank but spends as much time trying to break it. He’s programmed computers since BBC Micros and has never kicked the habit for long. He still sometimes plays two pound ninety-nine Codemasters Amstrad CPC cassette games from the 80s in his sleep, and while it’s been decades since he rolled a D20, he still knows what it means. He once took philosophy seriously.

Coldwake is his first novel. He lives with his wife and daughter in Harringay.

I always love worlds that fuse SciFi or Fantasy with the world of today I recognize. Coldwake does this in a brilliant way by envisioning a sort of metaphysical, neo-spiritualist philosopher of the early 20th century who stumbles upon “mindwork”, a semi-rationally-grounded form of, well, magic. (Thus, this novel also contributes to exploring the “what if magic or something like it had been real once, or could be again?” meme, as in some recent Neal Stephenson.)

Along the way, we get convincing portrayals of a group of people in the thrall of a demagogue… although not the one you think at first… set amid the chaos of impending war, and a brilliantly conceived near-future where human colonization is enabled by a form of space contraction… which is then abruptly lost.

This is a dense, complex read, unspooling the mystery and playing with time to keep the core surprises alive until the very end. A remarkable work from a remarkable mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dazzling work of original science fiction...

Coldwake is not a light read, but it is well worth the investment. A dazzling work of original science fiction that weaves complex themes of immortality, metaphysics, artificial intelligence(s) and alternative realities. Fizzing with creative ideas, and with a rich and absorbing style, Coldwake is quite unlike anything else I have read. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard-edged, neo-gothic thriller that will test you!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2023
Warning! Coldwake is not another floaty sci-fi. Coldwake is a swirling, dark, neo-gothic paranormal tale about emergent superpowers based on the exploitation of multiple realities. For mood, imagine Cormack MacCarthy crossed with Aldous Huxley.

The action begins in the far distant future, on a planet far, far away. Timoth senses a malign power around him and is alarmed that he might be linked with it. He and Martoth begin a reluctant quest to discover its source and stumble across a growing rift in the fabric of reality that had its origins hundreds of years earlier.

Back in the first half of the twentieth century, a group of misfits discover they are inexplicably linked through the eyes of an artist who lived and died long before they were born. Thus they begin a quest to uncover an impossible truth, that the world we live in is just a construct, one that can be altered by those who unlock its secrets.

Hawkins doesn’t pamper his readers. There is no plant in the story to whom the hero explains the complex ideas. He introduces new words and expects you derive their meaning from the context. The world we experience is a manifestation of our collective consciousness and can be manipulated by the unscrupulous. You need to keep up! Coldwake is awash with huge ideas and is entertaining, but do not attempt it if your idea of reading is ten minutes just before bedtime. It won’t work. You need to commit and embrace it, preferably in large chunks, and it will reward you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly original, intelligent scifi. I really enjoyed it

It's good to read something that is not an identikit SF novel!

Well written. Full of ideas. Genuinely new and surprising reveals throughout and an original vision of the future of humanity at the end.

A complex scifi fantasy, with hints of the Saga of the Exiles in its SF/history/fantasy crossover and detailed setup. The interwar bits are particularly intense. Well worth a read. It lingers with you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generous in spirit. Contains other worlds, minds, philosophy with love at its heart.

"Coldwake" is a stunning exploration of aspects of Earth through other worlds. It probes the breadth and depths of the mind, questioning what it means to be human. There is philosophical debate but also tension, suspense, yearning, and love. The writing is compelling and so absorbing that it is a wrench to emerge finally - breathless!
