Come What May: A Single Dad/Age Gap Romance (Southern Roots) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 468 ratings

Death…it’s the only guarantee in this rollercoaster ride called life. My dad always used to say “It’s what you do while you’re alive that matters.” But he’s gone now, and me…I’m spiraling out of control and on the verge of losing everything my dad worked so hard for.

Until Mateo Reyes makes me an offer I can’t refuse: he wants to purchase my dad’s shop. The payday would be monumental, but can I really sell all I have left of my dad?

Eventually, I give in. With a single caveat—he hires me to run it.

The tatted-up mechanic turns out to be as strict as he is handsome.

When I agreed to help my late friend’s daughter, I had no idea the kind of trouble I was inviting into my life. Seraphine’s young, reckless, impulsive, and drowning in her grief. The absolute last person I should allow around my teenaged daughter.

I’ve made it my personal mission to show her life does in fact go on after loss. After the death of my wife—I’d know.

Before I know it, I find myself thinking about things I have no business thinking of—like if her skin’s as soft as it looks and how her lips taste.

Turns out, she’s every bit as interested as I am, and while she might be my damnation, I’m willing to fight for her, come what may.

The Mechanic and his butterfly
This is absolutely on the top of my list for 2020. It's about living, never forgetting, moving on, finding new family, and that real true love will always find a way. Mateo Reyes is an honorable man, a single father of a great teenage daughter who loves him dearly and a man who knows loss. Seraphine a young woman alone struggling to hold on to what she has left not even sure what that is anymore. Her dad has suddenly abandon her at least that's how she sees it through her grief. Seraphine not dealing with her grief well is looking for trouble even if it's not intentionally. Desi, Mateo's daughter spots her in a bit of trouble and calls her dad to the rescue. This is where our love story begins, the attraction has been there for a little while but ever respectful of his daughter, decesead wife and first love as well as Seraphine, Mateo vows only to help get her past her grief and back to living life. It's beautiful how the author protrays Mateo's patience, sincerity and respect. It's through these we see how the relationship grows. We also see Seraphine really grow and change keeping the sassy spirit that drew Mateo's attention to begin with. Let's not forget our secondary characters there are plenty to love old and new. I really enjoyed the shop staff including the new hire I like his snark and hope he visits in the future. Mateo's family is mama Lety I adore and of course Desi who really helped make sure her dad couldn't ignore his feelings.

Come What May was a great book! Mateo and his Spanish speaking ways on top of tattoos and bossiness, will grab your heart and melt it. Seraphine, we finally get her story and wow, it will break your heart, but have you rooting for her to move on and accept her dad's death. Seraphine lets her grief take over, but Mateo, who was a friend of her dad's and older than her, decides to not let her grief win. Mateo and Seraphine take us on an emotional journey that will capture your heart and cheering these two on to figure things out along the way! Read this book and don't miss out on these two!

Seraphine is struggling and feeling very alone as the loss of her father has left her with a huge abyss in her life. She is trying to pick up the pieces but that is easier said than done until Mateo and his matchmaking daughter refuse to let her flounder by herself.

Mateo is a widower, a single father and was her father’s friend. He is battling himself as he is attracted to Seraphine but believes what she needs is support and not further complications. When he agrees to take over her father’s business it is a way for both of them to honor her father but working together proves to be a challenge he can’t resist.

Mateo is the perfect mix of sweet and sexy as they test the boundaries of their new relationship while Seraphine’s fun and feisty personality is exactly what he needs in his life and seeing their relationship unfold was a pleasure to watch.

I am a huge gap gap fan so I was excited for this book. I enjoyed it and it was definitely crazy super steamy. I just didn’t like Seraphine a lot...she was incredibly immature. I couldn’t see what Mateo saw in her beyond physically. I did love Mateo..he was a great man and father. I feel like the book made him seem older than he was (he was only 36) though.

I didn’t enjoy the Spanish/English repeatedness. I feel like it would have been more Spanglish that saying something in Spanish and repeating it in English. Now this annoyed me but it wasn’t a deal breaker to enjoying the book.

Overall, if you are looking for an age gap, insanely steamy romance that doesn’t have a ton of depth then this book is a good read and I would say go for it and enjoy it for what it is.

Seraphine is a quiet, shy young lady who has spent her teen years when she should have been dating and having fun taking care of her ailing father. She has not experienced many firsts in her life. Seraphine has known Mateo and has had feelings for him for years. Mateo is a widower, who has always put his daughter first. Mateo and Seraphine’s father were friends and colleagues. The problem is that Mateo is much older than Seraphine. His daughter, Desi, is only a few years younger than Seraphine. After the death of Seraphine’s father, Mateo becomes her lifeline as he buys her father’s business. Seraphine is resentful and doesn’t want his pity or his help. They fight their feelings as long as they can. Will Mateo be the first date, the first love, the first everything for Seraphine? You will have to read the book to find out!! This age gap romance is sweet and heartbreaking at the same time. These two lost souls deserve their happily ever after. I loved the appearances of the Simon, Cash, Drake, AzzyJo, Magnolia, and Myla Rose. It is always great to see cameos of our favorite characters from previous books. If you are looking for a sweet, emotional book with great characters, then I highly suggest you make Come What May your next read!

I liked the relationship between Seraphine and Mateo. It built a story around them.

    However spoiler ahead

It didn’t sit right with me when after their first time together and they didn’t use protection Mateo told her it would all be okay. However previously Seraphine had said before things were moving fast when she went to dinner at his moms house what they discussed. I felt Mateo didn’t give her a choice or didn’t give her room to make a choice if she wanted to take a Plan B or something. That’s just how it made me feel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry but this was kind of boring
Reviewed in Canada on December 9, 2021
Yeah… this just didn’t do it for me for so many reasons:

I hated Seraphine. She was soooooo annoying and immature! She was constantly crying. I get that she was grieving for her dad, but absolutely everything would make her tear up. I also HATED that she needed Mateo to dig her out of her grief and the hole that she had dug for herself. She was so weak! She was also really childish. She made REALLY dumb decisions, would say immature things, would literally stomp her foot and pout when she didn’t get her way, and when Mateo’s mother said “tell me something about yourself” one of the things that she said was “I like makeup.” 😂😂😂😂😂 I found her to be annoying, unlikeable, and a complete airhead!

I wasn’t a huge fan of Mateo either. He kept giving poor, dumb Seraphine mixed signals, for stupid non-existent reasons. His indecisiveness got old fast. I just wanted to shake him and be like “MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND”!

I didn’t like the two of them together as a couple either. There really wasn’t much chemistry there in my opinion. This was definitely what I would consider a “slow burn,” and when they finally got to the “good stuff” (at around the 70% mark), it really wasn’t all that good! I actually found it a little… awkward 😳. When they said their I love you’s for the first time, I just didn’t buy it! This book isn’t too long, only 244 kindle pages, and because Mateo was trying to stay away from Seraphaine for like half the book, they didn’t have a whole lot of interactions with each other before they were dropping L bombs. I didn’t feel the love between them at all.

There really wasn’t much of a plot to this, except for Seraphine and Mateo dancing around each other. It was pretty boring most of the time! 🥱

Also, my final complaint: I’ve read A LOT of books where H spoke a different language (Russian, Italian, Spanish etc.) and in those books H always calls h by a pet name in his native language. I find that really cute. Sometimes H will also swear in his native language. I also like that. But in this book, Mateo and his family would say random words, sentence or entire paragraphs in Spanish. It happened quite frequently. Sometimes there would be no translation, which I found annoying because I would have to use Google Translate to figure out what was being said. Sometimes there would be a translation because the person would repeat the exact same thing in English. I found that annoying too because it was redundant and just not believable. As someone who is bilingual, I have never once in my life said something in my native language, just to repeat it again in English. No one does that! It’s a complete waste of time and is hugely redundant.

Anyway… most things about this book annoyed me 🤷🏽‍♀️.
