A Well Constructed Murder: A Bellbrook Murder Mystery Book 1 (Bellbrook Murder Mysteries) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 507 ratings

Sometimes the smallest towns have the biggest secrets...

Karla Bell is good at three things: running her successful concierge business, being fiercely independent, and detecting lies.

When her late grandmother is falsely implicated in two mysterious deaths, Karla is determined to uncover the truth and clear her family's name. Even if she has to use every corporate skill she has, accept help from friends and family, and turn herself into a human lie detector.

Can Karla solve both mysteries and reveal the true culprit(s) before the small-town rumour mill grinds her family's reputation into dust?

If you like humourous cozy mysteries with a bit of small-town Canadian life, a close group of fun, loveable characters, dogs, and cats, then there's something in this series for you.

Clean read: no graphic violence, sex, or strong language.

Each book in the Bellbrook Murder Mystery Series contains a standalone mystery that is solved by the end of the book. The books can be read in any order, however the characters' lives and relationships evolve and change as the series progresses.

About the Author

Reagan Davis is a pen name. The author lives in the suburbs of Toronto with her husband, two kids, and a menagerie of pets. When she's not planning the perfect murder, she enjoys knitting, reading, eating too much chocolate, and drinking too much Diet Coke. The author is an established knitwear designer who has contributed to many knitting books and magazines. I'd tell you her real name, but then I'd have to kill you. (Just kidding! Sort of.)

Karla Bell left home to make a life for herself, and she has, as the owner of a well-respected concierge company. But she's returned home for her grandmother's funeral, and discovers that she's now the owner of all the late woman's property. Also returning is her prodigal mother, who has inherited the money, so Karla needs to make renovations with what she's acquired on her own. The first thing she plans to do is renovate the two cottages -- Mirabel and Bellflower -- but when she goes to check on the contractor she's hired for the job, she finds him dead. When there's a second body, no one knows what to make of it.

Now, with the help of her police chief father, her police officer sister, coroner best friend -- and reluctantly, her mother -- Karla must figure out who the murderer is and why these two were murdered...

This is the first book in the Bellbrook series, and the reason I decided to read it is because I have read the others and wanted to go back and see "where it all began." I can say that I was not disappointed in this book. It gives the full background of Karla and her family (other books reference it); and her troubled relationship with her estranged mother. For her part, Karla's mom Lynn is trying to mend things, but Karla is resentful and reluctant -- at least at first.

The mystery itself is written well, with plenty of suspects. There are a lot of red herrings, and things to throw you in first one direction and then another. The clues are all there, and as we get closer to the end, we begin to see in which direction they are pointing. What I love is Karla's ability to tell when people are lying. An interesting trait indeed.

When the ending comes and the killer is revealed, it's all rather sad in itself, but as I stated above, a very good book indeed.

Wow! What a story. This is a great first book that introduces a wonderful new series by Reagan Davis. In this story, Karla uproots her entire life to move back to Bellbrook after the death of her grandma, May. As Karla is working with a contractor to renovate the cottages on the property, more deaths occur and the whole town is on edge. Since the deaths happen at Bellbrook, Karla needed to solve the crimes to clear the family name. When Karla talks to people, she has a way of deciphering whether a person is lying or not. She calls it a “Tell”. Will Karla, her dog, Gucci and the help of her family, solve these murders and save the family name?

The story contained a great combination of murder, mystery, suspense and humor. I found the mystery engaging and there were plenty of hilarious moments. Throw in the twists and turns of the mystery and you have a great read. If you have read and enjoyed Reagan’s other series, “Knitorious”, you will enjoy this series. This is going to be another great series! This book is well-written and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging cozy mystery to read.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This story is somewhat confusing. There are several places that need editing.
I.e. a Prostate dog instead of prostRate dog. There needs to be some background info.on the site? What is the history of the place? Was it a wealthy
person's home,a resort, a hotel. Characters are brought in with no info on them. Story line is fine but it needs a good copy editor.

Karla returns to her hometown to take care of her grandmother, who ends up dying. Karla ends up with the family home abs plans to remodel. When she finds the contractor dead, she noses around. Her father and sister are on the police force (small town) and her best friend is the local doctor and coroner. I think the story was well written. The characters are interesting and can't wait to see how they evolve. The killer and why they killed was surprising. Great story.

Likable heroine, I didn’t spot the murderer until the reveal. I’ve read this author’s Knitorius series so it’s going to take time for this group of characters to grow on me. It’s a fun end of summer read

A cozy mystery with more twist and turns than a roller coaster. In this book, the girls are a bit older. Karla owns a business that caters to VIP clientele, Max is a police officer who works with Dean (Karla and Max's father), and Rob is a doctor and part time coroner. Lynn, Dean's ex and Karla's mother, arrived for her mother and Karla's grandmother's funeral. Karla hires Fitz to renovate the cabins. When Karla and Harry find Fitz dead, that's when the roller coaster ride begins. I was unable to guess who the murderer was. I claim that as an awesome murder mystery.

This is an ok read for a first in a new series but need improvement. I don't really like her method of investigating for this one, maybe it will be better in the next. Gucci, is a really good name for a dog.
