Coven of Consequence: A Gothic Romance (Eternal Enemies Book 2) Kindle Edition
There’s something terribly wrong with the Castleway Circus.
When mortals happen inside its big billowy tents, they don’t always come out again, and the clown specters who haunt it won’t leave me alone. My partner, Quiet, insists we go and investigate. I’d rather have my hands nailed to a moving train—better chance of surviving that as a vampire than whatever haunts the circus.
She believes the specters who persist in making our lives more difficult mean no harm. They just want our help, she says. I’m not convinced. I want to be of assistance when there’s a case that needs solving, but I have my limits.
I won’t give up Quiet.
Deep in my bones I know that’s what’s at stake. If we go there, if we surrender to those tents and the mysteries contained inside, I’ll lose the only person I’ve ever loved. But Quiet is certain that if we avoid facing the consequences growing within, I might be forced to give her up anyway...

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseQuiet and Rorick are back, and there are a few loose ends for them to clean up.
For instance, there are the children they were asked to save, and the circus with its sinister air, plus a few more unanswered questions such as “what exactly is Hecate after?”.
This is the second book featuring Quiet and Rorick, and it picks up shortly after the first book. It’s definitely not a standalone, so I highly recommend reading the first book before diving into this one; since we were left with some loose threads at the end of that story, and this book seeks to tie them up neatly in a bow.
Lots of questions are answered, and we get a very satisfying ending for the book.
It’s still a mysterious world, with overtones of Greek mythology and that creepy, gothic setting; but we see a couple of steamy scenes, some action and even a little magic. Gilbert and Anita (Quiet’s magical moth and assistant arachnid respectively) also make their delightful appearances again (just in case you worried).
This is a fun book for gaslamp fantasy lovers, gothic fantasy or paranormal fantasy fans too.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2025Format: KindleThis was a great conclusion to Quiet and Rorick’s story. This duology has been my favorite of S.L. Prater’s books. I love the mystery, gothic vibes, and the paranormal in this series. This book is short but fast paced and action packed. So much is happening and we really get to learn more about Rorick’s mysterious past and learn many new things about Quiet and Rorick’s connection. I love how this book was wrapped up and feel like it really fits Quiet and Rorick!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a fantastic follow up to Coven of Ill Repute. I loved getting to be back with Quiet and Rorick. These two have such a fun dynamic. It was I getting to see where they were at the start of this book (not too long after the events of book one) and how their relationship changed through out this story. Also loved getting to see Quiet’s sisters again. I loved the atmosphere again. The gothic vibes, some creepy clowns, mystery, and even a little bit of cozy thrown in made for a great time. Again the story and mystery kept me locked in. I enjoyed that we got to see more into things we started to learn in book one. Overall I have a great time with this duology!

I know I say this every time I finish another S.L. Prater book, but I will never get tired of the cozy vibes, banter, and emotional poignancy in her books. And Coven of Consequence more than met all of those well-established expectations.
It was nice to spend time with Rorick and Quiet again. The mystery of the haunted circus is just a fraction of what Steph has woven throughout this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mental challenge of trying to guess or anticipate each secret in advance of it being revealed. Truth be told, a lot of the revelations in this entry of the Eternal Enemies duet I did not see coming, and I love that.
The grumpy/grumpier vibe between our delightful detective duo was just as entertaining as it was in the last installment, the banter top notch and the hallmark quirkiness I've come to expect from Steph's books ever-present. But I will say that the added tension of the pair being in a well-established relationship while still having moments of friction when their mutual stubbornness came to a head was excellently written.
Quiet's menagerie of insect and arachnid familiars don't have as big of a role in this book as they did in Coven of Ill Repute, but it was nice to see Gilbert and Anita again. Poor Gilbert is still recovering from his close call in the previous book, but Anita more than makes up for it with her sassy, take-no-bullshit spidery ways. I swear, only Steph could make a giant sentient spider sound cute.
The overarching plot, however, regarding Rorick and the mystery behind not only who he is (since that was solved in the last book) but all of his lost memories, etc. was endlessly fascinating. We get to spend additional time with Hecate (and I have all of the complex feelings regarding her, even with that finale), and a few of the witches from Quiet's coven. I very much enjoy Steph's side characters in her books and this one was no exception.
The main conflict and climax tugged hard on my heartstrings and squeezed a few tears out of me. I was confident that the consequences of all these interwoven plot threads coming to a head would work themselves out somehow, but it was enjoyable seeing how Steph chose to tackle it. And her nod to Greek mythology with the expansion of Hecate's role and the introduction of a few other new characters felt simultaneously familiar, yet fresh.
My only complaint - and I will readily admit this is purely subjective - is that this is marketed as a gothic romance. In my personal opinion, I'd classify this more as paranormal romance with a handful of gothic vibes on the side. Coven of Ill-Repute definitely felt more gothic in comparison, even though upon reflection, I'm not entirely sure I'd classify that as a proper gothic romance either. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy either books - because I enjoyed them immensely. It's more of a marketing nitpick. Oh well.
Still had a great time, and while I'm sad that this duet is over, I'm excited to see what Steph writes next!

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing ending
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThat was intense, with so many revelations and surprising developments to end this duet. Truly the relationship between Quiet and Rorick is really something, they’re both bossy with the other in different ways, and I truly love that. The whole concept around the witches and the vampires is soo interesting and different from usual.
While Quiet is determined to investigate the Circus and free the children, Rorick aims to protect her. Between secrets, dangers, clowns, spectres and other creatures, problems - they will make a discovery that will change their life forever.
It was truly unexpected, tensed and just so well down. I enjoyed being with them again and was dreading the end, stressing out for them but just amazing.
