Covert in Cairo: A cozy murder mystery from Kelly Oliver (A Fiona Figg & Kitty Lane Mystery Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 932 ratings

Perfect for Amelia Peabody fans!
9-Book Series!

Cairo. Christmas 1917.

Following a tip-off from notorious spy Fredrick Fredricks, Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane of British Intelligence find themselves in the hustle and bustle of Egypt. But ancient mummies aren't the only bodies buried in the tombs of Cairo.

When a young French archeologist is found dead in a tomb in the desert with his head bashed in, and an undercover British agent goes missing, the threat moves closer to home.

As they dig deeper, soon Fiona and Kitty uncover a treasure trove of suspects, including competing excavators, jealous husbands, secret lovers, and belligerent spies! Fiona wonders if the notorious Fredrick Fredricks could be behind the murders? Or is the plot even more sinister?

One thing is clear - If Fiona and Kitty can't catch the killer, they might end up sharing a sarcophagus with Nefertiti.

With humor as dry as the Arabian desert, and pacing as fast as a spitting camel, Fiona and Kitty are back in another sparkling adventure, this time in WW1 Egypt.

Kelly Oliver is the author of four award-winning bestselling mystery series and dozens of nonfiction books.

Kelly grew up in the Northwest—Montana, Idaho, and Washington states. Her maternal grandfather was a forest ranger committed to saving the trees, and her paternal grandfather was a logger hell bent on cutting them down. The only thing they agreed on was Canadian rye whiskey. On both sides, her ancestors were some of the first settlers in Northern Idaho. She went from eating a steady diet of wild game shot by her dad (and playing drums with their hooves) to becoming a vegetarian while studying philosophy and pondering animal minds at Northwestern University where she got a PhD in philosophy. Competing with peers who’d come from private schools and posh families “back East” her working-class backwoods grit served her well. And much to her parent’s surprise, she managed to feed and clothe herself as a professional philosopher before giving up academia to become a mystery writer.

Her Jessica James Mysteries are contemporary suspense featuring a former Montana barrel racer become philosophy graduate student. Sound familiar? If James Patterson and Janet Evanovich had a love child, meet Jessica James. The Jessica James Mysteries have won the IPPY Award for BEST Mystery, The Silver Falchion Award for BEST Suspense, the Mischief and Mayhem Award for BEST Mystery, the E-Lit Award for BEST Suspense, and the New York Book Award for BEST Crime Novel.

Her cozy historical mystery series, The Fiona Figg Mysteries are set in WW1 and follow plucky file clerk turned spy Fiona Figg from London to Paris, Vienna, New York and Cairo. The first, Betrayal at Ravenswick, won a Reader's Choice Award for Historical Mystery. The second, High Treason at the Grand Hotel, was chosen by Mystery Tribune Magazine as one of the most anticipated mysteries of 2021. Mystery in Manhattan is the first in the spin-off series The Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane Mysteries, where Fiona gets a new side-kick. Arsenic at Ascot won the Silver Falchion Award for Best Historical Mystery.

Kelly is also the author of The Pet Detective Middle Grade Mysteries, including Cub Reporter, Treasure Hunter, and Geocacher. The Pet Detective Mysteries have won a Reader's Choice Award for Children's Mystery, been a finalist for a Silver Falchion Award for Children's Mystery, and won a New York Book Award for BEST Children's Book.

Kelly's latest series is The Detection Club Mysteries featuring Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. The first in the series, The Case of the Christie Controversy, launched at #1 bestselling historical mystery. The second, The Case of the Body on the Orient Express, will be out in the fall.

When she’s not writing mysteries, Kelly is emerita Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. Kelly's nonfiction work includes over 100 articles and over twenty books, including: Hunting Girls: Sexual Violence from The Hunger Games to Campus Rape (which won a CHOICE AWARD for Outstanding Title). She has been featured on ABC news, CSPAN books, and various radio programs.

Another fabulous Fiona Figg mystery!

Another fabulous Fiona Figg mystery!
“Sherlock Holmes had Moriarty, but I had Fredrick Fredricks.” Another fabulous Fiona Figg adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the series. It’s a tongue-in-cheek, cozy mystery reminiscent of Elizabeth Peters. In fact, there’s even a nod to the beloved Egyptologist Amelia Peabody Emerson in the book as well as other famous real life figures including T.E. Lawrence, Gertrude Bell, Howard Carter, Brigadier-General Clayton, and several others loosely based on actual people. In the last book, Frederick Fredricks, the dastardly spy Fiona’s been tasked with bringing down, indicated he would be heading to Cairo. Fiona, Kitty, beloved dog Poppy, and Captain Clifford Douglas journey to Egypt to search for a missing agent as well as hunt down Fredericks and get into all sorts of trouble. As Fiona searches for clues involving the missing agent, she stumbles on to a plot involving Germany, stolen antiquities, and the Suez Canal. She gets more than she bargains for when she’s accused of murder. Her sidekick Kitty is an intriguing young woman with a mysterious past. She hid her identity in the first book and seemed to be in league against Fiona. However, in Covert in Cairo, they’ve become colleagues and it’s clear Kitty has a lot of knowledge and skills including foot-fighting we keep discovering as the series goes on. We even see little Poppy getting into the act. I adore the love/hate relationship Fiona has with Frederick Fredericks. The South African spy certainly has charm and knows just how to get under Fiona’s skin. Then there’s the mysterious, secret agent Archie whom Fiona has a romantic interest in. He shows up in the most unexpected places and it’s difficult to know just whose side he’s on. It’s a fast-paced, action-filled mystery that kept me guessing as I unraveled the clues right along with Fiona. Can’t wait to read the next installment that’ll take them to Italy! Recommend reading the first book in the series before reading this one. There are a lot of characters and many of them were introduced in the first book. Highly recommend the audiobook version! The narrator is fantastic. She has a lovely British accent that makes it a delightful listen and expertly distinguishes the many characters. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher, but also listened to the audiobook version. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.

After a bit of a rocky start, the plot thickens up nicely. Fiona and friend are in Cairo searching for a missing agent. Of course her true mission is to find Frederick Fredericks, the South African spy. Added into the mix, Archie, her love interest also shows up. There's murder, German spies, lock picking, and all sorts of adventures for the head file clerk of section 40. Lots of fun.

This book is fairly written. The characters are quite interesting in a "Perils of Pauline" fashion, dashing about willy-nilly and getting into all kinds of chases. However, the whole story just does not appeal to me. Do not take my word for it! Read the book for yourselves!

Another fun romp, this time through Cairo and Egypt’s archaeological sites for Fiona et al. It even includes a hat tip to my favorite Egyptologist, Amelia Peabody Emerson (although making her a nurse?? Peabody would have been affronted).

This time they actually catch Fiona’s nemesis, Frederick Fredericks, but apparently he doesn’t stay caught for long. . .

I recently learned what dramatic irony means. It's a fun and funny way to keep you interested in a story and its characters. And Covert in Cairo has it in spades. From her hidden feelings about Fredrick Fredricks to her troubled identity as a subject of a teetering British empire, Fiona keeps us hooked and wanting to read more about her and her friends. I really liked this installment of the Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane mystery series. And I can't wait for the next one. Until then, I'll keep calm and carry on...

Wonderful color, well described exotic locals. Well exotic for a gal from the file room of the war office in London anyway.
Fiona tries to be straight laced, doesn't quite pull it off she wants to be adventurous too badly.
Kitty , she's another story entirely.
She is such a bundle of contradictions you don't know who or what she really is.
    Its a fun read
    Enjoy!!

This is a fun diversion for an afternoon or evening read.

World War I is in full swing and former file clerk turned spy Fiona Figg has been dispatched by British Intelligence directly from her recent adventures in New York and accompanied by her well meaning but bumbling 'minder' and her new partner/protege Kitty Lane as well as Poppy the Pomeranian (who may be the brightest member of the group) to Cairo. Fiona is assigned to tracking down German agent Frederick Fredericks and preventing him from carrying out his nefarious plot to damage the Suez Canal. Fiona and entourage throw themselves into their mission with great enthusiasm and manage to meet an illustrious group of the time and place - Howard Carter, Lawrence of Arabia and even the illustrious - if fictional - Amelia Peabody Emerson.

This is an entertaining read but not necessarily one to keep for re-reading.

Set in Egypt during the WWI, Fiona Figg is a file clerk turned British agent seeking to solve the disappearance of another agent. Her adventures and misadventures set her in the path of the notorious spy Frederick Fredericks. Along the way she meets many historical figures…Lawrence of Arabia, Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. Will she ever be able to stop the nefarious plans of Fredericks? And what question does Archie have for her? I guess we’ll all just have to keep reading!

Plenty of twists in the story and fast paced fun too.
So many characters of interest, it’s especially great to see T.E. Lawrence, Gertrude Bell , and Howard Carter in the story weaving between the fictional characters.
Fiona made me laugh out loud. As for Kitty - she is an absolute delight.
    A fun read.

Fiona Figg doesn't disappoint; stylish sleuthing,
slippery villains. Colonial nostalgia with polo ponies, camels, fox hunt, tombs and Egyptian curios thrown in. Will she ever get her man, err ... men ;) ... read on! Thoroughly enjoyable, a witty and fun read.

An amusing cosy mystery set in First World War Cairo, Kelly Oliver paints a vivid, colourful picture amidst the dirt and smells.( Nothing has changed, Cairo is still hot, dirty and smelly)The characters are also vivid, colourful and surprising, if sometimes unbelievable. To me, the American spellings don’t sit well with the period, but still a good read.

Fiona Figg, the heroine, is strongly based on the archaeologist character of Amelia Peabody, especially her costumes and equipment, to say nothing of her Victorian sensibilities.
The plot is a bit of a shambles and the novel ends inconclusively, though definitely expecting the reader to rush out and procure the next book in the series. I wouldn’t bother really, unless you want a novel you can easily put down and not want to become involved in.
