- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt's sequel time! The Crossover Paradox is the sequel to The Ascension Machine, a tale of alien superheroes learning to handle their powers and... well, life itself, at a futuristic academy.
I loved the first book, in which the lead character, Grey, finds himself masquerading as someone else and unexpectedly making friends along the way.
The sequel brings the characters back for a new term at the academy - but there have been some unexpected shifts along the way. There's a distance between Grey and some of his closest friends, which leaves Grey feeling a little out of place again. Which would be fine if it wasn't for the murder.
Oh yes, there's a murder. And after a year of lying about who he really is, Grey becomes a suspect. There's only one person who knows he is innocent - Grey himself, and so he sets about investigating who the real killer is.
What he uncovers won't just impact his own future at the academy, but perhaps even the academy itself.
It's full of twists and turns, without getting too slowed down by the mystery - there's plenty of action along the way too.
Most of all, I love the personal touches, the way in which Grey questions the friendships he has unexpectedly come to rely on, and the way those friends prove their worth as the mystery deepens.
It's a fun read, a warm, witty, clever read, and I loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a nice continuation of the first book. Grey is the main protagonist. His superpower is his ability to get into a world of trouble quick. Seriously the guy only has a grappling gun and that’s the extent of his superpowers. I like superheroes like that. The Superman types are just not as interesting. This is a nice combination of superhero and sci-if. I’m not big into sci-if but Rob really makes this work in his world building. I hope to see more characters added with the final installment that I hope comes soon.
Once again the story starts with Grey and his team of friends at the Justice Academy. It doesn’t take long for the twists and turns to start. The story turns into a murder mystery and Grey ends up right in the thick of it. Things go from bad to worse and and in additional to this murder spawns another great mystery. I don’t want to reveal to much so I’ll stop here. It is a nice read and well worth the read. I hope the third part of this trilogy comes out soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Crossover Paradox is a fun and clever mash-up of genres (well Crossover?) which managed to use all the greats ingredients of The Ascension Machine while expanding on the universe of the Justice Academy. It strikes the right balance of action, investigation and mystery and keeps the reader on its toes. There are twists and turns at every corner and no sooner the situation clarifies that Grey finds himself in a whole new world of troubles.
It's great to go back to the well-rounded cast of characters and I enjoyed the exploration of their friendships but also their very realistic reactions to stressful situations. The cast is well balanced with their strengths and weaknesses and I enjoyed the new characters (more Brontoms!) I wish that we would get some clearer answers to what has actually happened to Grey, after the event of the first book. It seems that it will have to wait for the final book of the trilogy. I recommend it even if you haven't read the first one, you can get caught up really quickly! For: fans of my hero academia, of super-augmented banters and space station's architecture.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great book 2. It could have been just another group adventure for the characters, but Grey's life takes some unexpected turns with an ending to set us up for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2022Format: KindleThe Crossover Paradox sees the return of Grey, the main character in The Ascension Machine, from whose perspective the story is told, as he returns for year two at the Justice Academy school for superheroes, where not all superheroes need superpowers.
“Technically, Grey isn’t the name on my ID, but since that name is also fake, I’m not sure why I should be limited by it. Grey is who I chose to be, and so far, he’s been the most successful me I’ve ever been. The first year I was Grey, I made a lot of friends, enrolled in college (although that was under yet another name) and stopped an alien invasion.”
Some of his friends gained powers after coming into contact with The Ascension Machine in the first book of the series, but Grey does not feel in any way changed. He is glad to be returning after his summer break and looking forward to seeing the group of friends he made in year one, especially his roommate from last year, Seventhirtyfour and Lucy Sky Diamond who he hopes might become his girlfriend. Unfortunately these hopes are thwarted and he finds himself in a far from perfect second year, where Seventhirtyfour is accompanied by more Brontom clones who expect him to hang out and room with them rather than with Grey, Lucy brings a new boyfriend from her home world to the Academy with her and a teacher is murdered soon after term begins. The teacher is the aunt of his good friend, Avrim, and Grey feels compelled to lead an investigation into her death in parallel with the official investigation undertaken by the staff who seem to think Grey is suspect number one. The story becomes a murder mystery at this point with plenty of clues to follow as to the identity of the murderer.
The book is full of action, which starts right away, before Grey even reaches the Justice Academy. He is involved in an exciting chase on the space station where he spent his summer break. This sets the tone for the novel and the fast pace continues right through the book, making it difficult to put down.
There are plenty of intriguing alien species, superheroes with and without powers and unexpected twists in the tale which will keep you guessing. There is of course a supervillain with ridiculously OP powers and everyone needs to work together in order to attempt to take him on.
The world building in the book is solid, we shift scenes from a space station to the Academy, then to another space station, to the dreaded Tartarus, high security prison on the Academy home world, the beach, the jungle around the Academy and another space station. Each of these are described with enough detail to make them easy to visualise:
“It was surprisingly mundane. A plain steel slab set into a heavy concrete wall. Not even a sign to tell you what the building was, but I suppose that wasn’t necessary. Even the students who weren’t criminals knew this place and what it was for. In my worst imagining of this, I’d pictured a thunderstorm overhead, blackening the sky and punctuating the proceedings with jagged knives of lightning. Instead, I could make out the far-off sounds of an Academy beach party in progress. At least it was dusk. That lent a modicum of drama to the proceedings.”
The “Crossover Paradox” of the title is described as a concept which occurs in superhero stories whereby two rival superheroes begin by fighting each other and then end up teaming up in order to defeat a super villain. Towards the end of the story, the principal of the Academy tells Grey:
“Perhaps this is just our form of conflict before we inevitably team up and defeat the true villain. The crossover paradox.”
Aimed at Middle grade and YA readers, there are once again positive messages of teamwork, self-acceptance and self-belief. Grey is a brave and loveable rogue who falls back into his grifting tendencies when he leaves the Academy for a while, but he misses the Academy and his friends and will always put his friends and his loyalty towards them first. Highly recommended to fans of superhero stories and stories with school settings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une excellente suite ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Spot-on follow up to the Ascension Machine
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's been quite a while since I read The Ascension Machine, the first book in the trilogy, but I put this book in the bag for a flight earlier this week - and read it cover to cover in one sitting. I was expecting a "second year in superhero school" type book, but what I got was so much better. It is as funny as the original, and still has the features of the first one (the school, Powerball, the original characters) but it keeps these woven in with a whole new set of characters, a great new area and a hilarious new obsession with superhero names.
Too often, these young adult books seem to just recreate the first book's premise in a different setting (quarter-quell anyone?), but this one takes a linked but new direction, which is really refreshing. It also feels like it is part of a trilogy, with threads from last time being pulled on but not yet resolved.
It's not perfect - I think you need to re-read the first one so you can remember what each of the races are, and sometimes there are some blink-and-you-miss-it parts in the action that had me scurrying back over pages to work out what I'd missed, but these are minor issues in a read that it is very, very good. It is self-aware, well written, laugh-out-loud funny and inventive, and well worth a read. And gadget dude is one of my favourite characters of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great SF story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the sequel to The Ascension Machine and continues the story of Grey and his friends as they start their second year’s at the Justice Academy.
As in the first book the characterisation is good and there are great action sequences.
I can’t wait for the third book in the series.
