Can't Take The Heat? (Calico Cove) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,241 ratings

Can't take the heat? Then don't kiss the chef.

Celebrity chef Antony Renard has been banished to Calico Cove while his bad-boy reputation gets a makeover, but just because he’s famous—and hotter than a french fry—doesn’t mean he gets whatever he lays those ice-blue eyes on…namely, me.

This food truck girl knows he’s out of my league and probably has a trail of broken hearts that lead back to his kitchen in California. The chemistry that flares hot between us doesn’t matter. We’re total opposites. He’s a control freak and I hate rules. He dates models and I date…um, no one.

Yet the more Antony comes around demanding to try my delicacies, the more I begin to crave his wicked charm. And the more I want…just a taste…of him.

*

The whole town swears Birdie makes the best sandwiches for miles. Not that I would know because each time I show up at her food truck, she refuses to serve me anything but a sassy smile that makes me want to lick those strawberry-red lips.

But when we’re forced to work together to help a local teen, I have to prove I’m more than my bad PR and show Birdie that I’m worth the risk, even if I’m everything she never wanted.

Author's Note: This slow burn, enemies to lovers romance with a found family brings all the feels. It serves up a deliciously grumpy hero and the spicy-sweet heroine who just can't resist him. Oh, and there are falafels. Because why not?

This one was so much fun!

Antony “Tony” Reynard and Genevieve “Birdie” Monet made such a beautiful couple. She helped him see that the epic control he was holding onto so desperately was weighing him down, and he helped her see that having a little bit of control over your life and emotions isn’t such a bad thing ❤️

I love how they found Nick and both of them understood his circumstances in different ways.
Both had run away from emotionally troubled homes with Tony’s being physically troubled as well. They each put their stamp of love on Nick and brought him home 🥰🥰

The book was good, but the timeline jumped around. Every chapter was a perspective from one of the characters from a different age in their lives.

If you’re okay with that style of writing, then you will enjoy the book. To me it was distracting.

I loved this addition to the Calico Cove series! I have to say, this author has such a gift for writing witty banter between her main characters. I’m not a big enemies to lovers fan (I hate when they just constantly argue). But Birdie and Antony were hilarious together. They were bitter enemies, yet they had this intense chemistry and as I said, the banter between them was so well done.

As with the other books in this series, I loved all side characters. I loved the storyline with Nick, the homeless teenager that Birdie and Antony were trying to help. The character development was fantastic all around. The scenes with other characters were hilarious. I have to say that baby Nora stole the show lol. None of this took away from the romance though. It just made the story more enjoyable.

Now, Birdie and Antony don’t truly “get together😉” until about 85% in and usually that would be way too late for me—but it was so worth the wait here. There’s a little drama after that, but it doesn’t last long and I loved the ending!!

Most excellent. Soul searching situations, accepting the past and moving on to the future together. Running does not solo problems, staying is hard but rewarding. The ending is the happiest ever! I loved this book.

That's about the sum of it: I didn't have much appetite for this one. The character development left a few things feeling unfinished, plus the writer confuses "then" and "than". The premise is fair. Contrived.

It's, well, average. Vegan is okay if you're normally a carnivore but skipped a couple meals—I haven't. Legumes don't impress me.

Give it a try, maybe? It may fit your taste.

Loved this one. I haven't read the first one yet. I started on the 2nd. But so far, this one is my favorite. I loved the characters. Antony was swoon worthy. Birdie was adorable. Nick was great. My only complaint was typos. There weren't as many as the 3rd book, and it was easy to read through. But there were more than there should be.

Antony and Birdie did not appear to be destined for their HEA with anyone, let alone each other. There was so much brokenness that Hailey Shore shared in snippets throughout the story. I enjoyed that so much more than getting it all in one long prologue. I adored the HEA so much. Hailey Shore knows how to add humor to even the most intense scenes.

I love Calico Cove! I have been reading this series and love the town and people! Hailey Shore has created wonderful characters and detailed world that you just feel like are your friends. I can't wait to read about the other single members of the town so I can keep up with everyone! Madame Za rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic story from Calico Cove

Having read the previous Calico Cove books, I was eager for the next installment and Can't Take The Heat did not disappoint. I loved Birdie/Genevieve and Tony, particularly their 'battle flirting' at the beginning! Nick was a great addition to the story and I love the way other Calico Cove residents pop up along the way.
As always, there were lots of laugh out loud moments, interspersed with some really poignant ones as we got an insight into Tony and Nick's childhoods. One of the things I like about these books is that although they tackle some darker subject matter, they never get so dark that you can't enjoy the beauty of the relationships between the lead characters and their friends. Overall the tone is light-hearted but it doesn't feel as if the darker topics are glossed over, they just don't take over the story.
I'm already looking forward to my next fix from Calico Cove (I hope there is one!) Perhaps Levi or Matt will be next?

Well written, the sparks and back and forth between Tony and Birdie make it fun to read. The characters around them are also fun to read, as they call Tony and Birdie out on what they're not dealing with

Well written. Good character development for the main players but also building peripheral characters. Small town charm and feel good end.
I’m not sure how many are set in this town but this is the second one I read. I would read another

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but confusing?
Reviewed in Canada on May 25, 2023

I loved this book but it was not what I was expecting, and therefore confusing, based on what was revealed about Antony at the end of Mal & Jolie’s book. At the end of book 1 in this series at Mal & Jolie’s wedding, Mal was very grateful that Antony had agreed to be his best man as weddings were hard for Antony - Antony had said it was hard to enjoy them when he’d hurt/broken the heart of the woman he loved.
Based on that I was expecting this to be a second chance romance between Antony and that woman. When it clearly wasn’t I was waiting and waiting during the book for him to reveal this past info about himself and the who what where when stuff…except it never happened. In fact, based on this book, Antony’s never been in love or had a truly serious relationship before…so can’t say I was thrilled about the lack of continuity for his character/backstory.
That said, had that not been mentioned in book 1 as part of his story set up I would have zero complaints about this book! :)

Absolutely loved this book. It flowed well and loved the dialogue that sucked you right into the story. Tony was a dream character and gen was his ideal match although the constant on the move and running away did irritate me at times. Supporting characters were all interesting and I’d read more by this author who was new to me.
