- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2024I have to say, Humphrey the author is quite the character! The case doesn’t start immediately, but once it does, the investigation is thorough and multi-layered. Very enjoyable! The characters are warm and smart. The way the old bats (no disrespect!) use their age to their advantage made me smile. Multiple POVs make sure we get all sides of the story. And it just worked. Eve’s POV is the most important. She’s smart, kind, and practical, and needs to learn to tune into her intuition. A very authentic, magical book. It’s clear the author knows her stuff, she writes about it all with such love and respect. And Eve, stop hiding the good biscuits, it’s no use, LOL!
And I never knew there were So. Many. Things that can bring either bad or good luck!
This series is best read in order, to really understand that subtle-but-exciting paranormal element.
If you love Ireland and its rich culture, if you love books set in Ireland that are full of Irish charm and traditions, if you are intrigued by Irish folk magic, then this is the book for you.
Quote: “Books are like friends, my dear. None of them are perfect, but all of them are valuable. And all of them deserve respect.” Hear, hear!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2024I have so much fun when I get to visit with Eve and "the Old Bats" in Dublin. Ms. Hayes never disappoints, and this book is no exception. An engaging mystery with several twists and turns, multiple suspects and a few applications of Irish magic kept me turning the pages. I also enjoyed learning about the Irish wedding traditions and superstitions as Eve was helping Margaret to prepare for her and Ronan's wedding.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024A joyful return to the world of the Old Bat Chronicles, Nina Hayes’ latest finds the titular ladies and their loyal minions in the midst of a literary festival and the troubles of the headliner, a famous thriller writer – all while preparing for the wedding of two dear friends. And then, of course, there’s a murder. With a wickedly funny take on the writing world, a fully-realized community setting, and a deep and satisfying grounding in Irish culture and folklore, this is far more than a mystery. It’s a visit to beloved friends. Not to mention a wonderful education in Irish life and lore – make sure you read the note at the end! A terrific ride from start to finish, with laugh-out-loud and heartwarming moments along the way, and -- no spoilers! -- an absolutely lovely wedding scene, this book is pure magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Happiness is another installment of The Old Bat Chronicles. In this third adventure of the Old Bats, there is going to be a wedding, but more important there is a murder at the local literary festivaland the Old Bats must solve itso that the weddinf can take place as scheduled.
If you're feeling down the Old Bats are bound to cheer you up with their antics.
Apart from a fun story and a good dose of humour, there is much to be learned in this book about Irish wedding traditions and superstitions.
This is another winner in this series and I can't wait for the next installment.
