The Hart of Christmas: A Sweet Christmas Hockey Romcom (Dating A Denver Dragon Book 1) Kindle Edition
Millie Jane Brooks’ dream of stardom falls apart when she can’t catch a break in Nashville. With her tail between her legs, she sulks back home to spend a few days at her best friend’s vacant house before facing the truth—she might not be cut out for a singing career. But Millie Jane isn’t the only one seeking solitude and when her high school enemy crashes her perfectly laid plans of escape, she's faced with more than just her current failures.
Dex Hart is looking forward to a quiet recovery at his step-sister’s house after a season-ending injury halts his hockey career. With questions about his future looming over him, he’s hoping to find clarity over the holidays. But when he gets snowed in with Millie, the girl who got away, old feelings rise to the surface, stealing any chance of rest.
Millie Jane's heart is guarded after Dex’s betrayal years ago, but Dex has missed her sassy remarks and sparkling eyes too much to let the past ruin this second chance at love. Dex is determined to help her see that God might have another plan for her life... and his.
Can Dex break the walls around her heart in time for Christmas? Or will she shut him out and run away like she did all those years ago?

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2024What a fun and heartfelt second chance love story! I have been wanting to dive into this series for awhile now and finally had the chance. The Hart of Christmas is the introduction story for a series about a hockey team called the Denver Dragons. Although Dex is a hockey player on that team, this story really revolves around two people who are snowed in together for a few days. It is a clean, Christian fiction novel and I was fascinated to find out what had happened between Dex and Millie years ago to take them from two teens who were friends and had crushes on each other to enemies.
I, honestly, loved the way Dex pursued Millie. He regretted the things that had happened in the past. And, although he had been living a successful life, he recognized that he still cared about her more than anything else.
There were difficult moments in the story, as Millie tried to face that maybe she had let bitterness grow in her heart. And that perhaps she wasn’t actually following what God wanted for her in her life, but only what she thought she was supposed to do. I enjoyed seeing her heart soften toward Dex, as well.
This story lifted me up and made me happy to read. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series, as well. This is the first book that I have read by this author and it was a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2023This was a sweet little Christmas read, and I loved the banter and interactions between Dex and Millie! I’m not always a fan of flashbacks, but I thought that the back and forth from the present and their high school days worked well to build the story and show what happened between them. I’d recommend this to readers who like second chance romances, a snowed-in trope, and woven in faith.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023I have loved all the books I have read by Latisha Sexton. Suspense, women's fiction, and now a rom-com. Love the range of genres she writes in. I always thought I wouldn't be a huge fan of romance and rom-com, but I have discovered that I actually do enjoy romance. And this rom-com was amazing.
Here we have a friends to perhaps more to enemies to friends to maybe hopefully more story. Dex and Millie's relationship started in high school, but ended with them on far-from-friendly terms. Millie would have preferred to never have seen Dex again, unfortunately they end up snowed in at her best friend's house, who happens to be Dex's step-sister.
I absolutely loved seeing their relationship evolve. And the banter was awesomely hilarious. The story is told in first person, alternating between Dex and Millie, and also between current day and their time in high school. Slowly we start to learn what happened to end their former relationship. Though it may have been a bit predictable, I loved discovering what actually happened, and having the truth come out which impacted their current relationship.
I also loved that they are both Christians and that they trust in God and lean on him.
When I first learned about this book, I did not realize this was the beginning of a series and now I can't wait to read more from this series.
Definitely a book I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024A sweet romance for teenagers. Not very interesting for adult reader. A couple dating in high school would probably go their separate ways. This couple would probably never gotten back together. The female character written as not putting any effort in trying to make a career and did appear to get a job after moving back home . Did she just live off her grandmother. The male just quit his hockey career and just fell into a high school coaching job . Coaches in the school system with limited funding would require the coach to have a degree and teach some classes besides being a coach. A hockey player with only a high school diploma could volunteer but secondary schools have guidelines they must go by.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2023The story is fun! The flashbacks are an interesting way to develop the characters. Dex is hilarious and creates great chemistry in the story. I like when the male character actually likes the female more. Usually, it is the female pining! I thought the talk of faith inspiring. I have never read this author but will read more from her!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023This author is super versatile. In The Hart of Christmas, she has moved me from her usual edge of the chair suspense that I am used to from her work, into major belly laughs, swoony moments and eye rolls.
I enjoyed learning about the life circumstances Millie and Dex found themselves in when they ended up in forced proximity to each other. And the way they worked through their differences to find common ground for a good cause.
The reasons they must work through their differences and past hurts leads us on the path to grace and forgiveness. I love the way Sexton weaves Spiritual Truth into the lives of her characters.
The Hart of Christmas is a fast pace, fast read, that is great for cold evenings in a comfy chair with a cup of hot chocolate.
I give this book a 5 Star rating for sure!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2024Absolutely loved this cozy romance ❤️🎄🎁 I devoured it over the holiday. I absolutely loved the chemistry, sweetness, and banter. Love ❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2023Sweet, slightly predictable Christmas romance.
The interactions between the main characters made me laugh and I really liked the anecdotes about Fluffy the cat. Dex was my favorite and I thought he was well-written.
I'm not a fan of the forced proximity trope which I'm coming to realize. I also don't get the hype of the hockey romances but thought I would give it a try.

Started out strong and very enjoyable. But the constant references to God seemed to outshine the plot. Had potential but couldn't handle all the God references
