Dance of Jesters (The Great Dance Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

From betrayal's ashes, a vengeful dance begins.

Esteban Audaz had it all – wealth, power, and respect. As ruler of a prosperous oceanside city, he enjoyed a storied name and the love of a beautiful woman. But when betrayal strikes, he is attacked and left for dead, his life in ruins.

Washed ashore on an island cloaked in myth and fear, Esteban discovers the remnants of a long-dead civilization. Amidst the tropical forest, he encounters a enigmatic man guarding a dark secret, while ancient, powerful forces lie dormant within the island's ruins.

Fueled by vengeance, Esteban forges himself into a weapon to reclaim his home. As he faces unexpected alliances and formidable enemies, his quest for revenge transforms into a journey of self-discovery. As war looms on the horizon, the fate of Vilancia hangs in the balance. Esteban must choose between becoming the spark that ignites destruction or the flame that purges the corruption at the heart of his realm.

Dance of Jesters is the gripping first installment of The Great Dance, a series chronicling the revenge and redemption of a once-honorable man. One thing the author D.W. Hawkins excels at is telling a story. I picked this book up and began page one and didn't put it down again until I got to the end. I almost never give a book 5 stars but this is story telling at its very best.
Esteban is a happily married Duke who receives a mysterious b ox one day. The box holds a magical spy glass and a cryptic message. When he follows the message and uses the spy glass he discovers that his whole life is false and he has been living with his head stuck deep in the sand. Shortly after he finds himself narrowly escaping an assassination attempt and washed up on the beach of mysterious and dangerous island. He is saved from dying of his wounds by a legendary knight.
Esteban tells the knight how he ended up there. Realizing that he has been naive and pampered he asks the knight to teach him. Eventualyy rhe knight agrees. What follows is a fast paced journey of a man who remakes himself. It has everything a good story is made up of. An amazing character that you like and care about experiencing everything from magic, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, rage, and an indomitable spirit that won't give up until it's had it's vengeance. A great read and an amazing new character I can't wait to see what happens to them next.

It's not everyday that a random book not only hooks me, but damn near breaks my neck with unpredictable twists and turns. Some parts bring familiarity, while others are fresh and genuinely new to me. I couldn't put this book down, not even at work. Whatever's next, I'm here for it.

Twists and turns, murderous mages, sword fights, muskets and more fill these pages. Esteban, the MC, is an interesting character. We start with him in flagrante delicto and things basically go downhill from there. As a lord and a military man, he finds himself entangled in all kinds of duplicity and plotting. It was interesting trying to parse exactly what was going on as the action could get rather convoluted, and I found myself enjoying every minute of it. Filled with lush descriptive writing and dialogue, the book held my attention. As someone who read Dumas and Forrester, at times it felt like I was reading a more fantastical version of their works.

It's the start of a series, and I’m looking forward to reading more of Author Hawkins’ works.

Fair warning – some parts are a bit graphic, but it suits the storytelling style.

Like the calm before the storm, this starts softly, then BOOM. Had to finish in one sitting. Looking forward to the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read. Interesting and ticks the boxes for a good fantasy book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 31, 2023
I enjoyed the plot a lot. It was hard to see exactly where the story was going (in a good way). There were lots of questions to be answered ( I am sure the important ones will be in the sequals)

The reason for the 4 star and not 5 is because there are a few times where i had to re-read a few sentences a couple of times as the wrong form of a word was used, or in one case a paragraph repeated itself.
But it didn't cause the content of the book to spoil.
Great book. Great read, would recommend it. 👌
