Dark Notes Kindle Edition

"Raw, dark, yet achingly tender, Dark Notes is a scorching-hot masterpiece as beautifully written as the music within." ~ Anna Zaires, NY Times Bestselling Author

They call me a slut.
Maybe I am.
Sometimes I do things I despise.
Sometimes men take without asking.

But I have a musical gift, only a year left of high school, and a plan.
With one obstacle.

Emeric Marceaux doesn’t just take.
He seizes my will power and bangs it like a dark note.
When he commands me to play, I want to give him everything.
I kneel for his punishments, tremble for his touch, and risk it all for our stolen moments.

He’s my obsession, my master, my music.
And my teacher.

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author, Pam Godwin, lives in the Midwest with her husband, cats, retired greyhounds, and an old, foul-mouthed parrot. She traveled the world for seven years, attended three universities, married the vocalist of her favorite rock band, and retired from her quantitative analyst career in 2014 to write full-time.

Her interests veer toward the unconventional: bourbon, full-body tattoos, and tragic villains. Equally peculiar are her aversions to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.

Beautiful forbidden romance
5 out of 5 stars
Beautiful forbidden romance
I am in my Pam Goodwin era, and Dark Notes is another intelligently written, completely consuming romance from a new favorite author. This is a student-teacher romance, but the forbidden aspect felt almost secondary to this love story about two soulmates who just happen to be teacher and student. I loved the role that music played throughout the book and the beautiful and poignant prose carried throughout Pam’s writing. Music is the fabric of their connection and this theme is front and center throughout the story. While I wouldn’t necessarily label this a dark romance, there are very triggering elements to this book. Ivory has led a traumatic life and Pam does not gloss over the details. Ivory is a survivor and it’s this innate strength that draws Emeric in, despite her off limits status. Emeric is all dominant alpha male, and the spicy scenes are plentiful and scorching hot. Alongside the beautiful romance are some suspenseful moments and of course, some unexpected twists and turns. I love how everything wrapped up and swooned at these characters well deserved happily ever after.

This book has been on my TBR for a hot minute. I grabbed my kindle started reading, and did not put it down till I finished it!

You instantly fall in love with Ivory. Girl from a broken home, insanely talented piano player who just wants out of her town after finishing high school.

Then comes Emerick in to teach at the very same high school Ivory attends. He comes with a lot of baggage as well and is only there to teach under an agreement he has made!

When these two cross paths it’s instant attraction. If you love age gap romances, student/teacher, and dom/sub THIS book will hit every nail on the head!!

This book had so much sexual tension you could feel it a mile away, this was some of the best writing that made you wanna yell JUST KISS ALREADY!! Pam keeps you on your toes just itching for that moment, but boy when she gives it to you…well worth the wait is all I can say!!

10/10 across the bored I can’t say enough great things about this book!!

To state the obvious, I’ve seen this plot in plenty of pornography… I think I need one of those disclaimers saying actors and actresses were eighteen but since this is a book and it worked in one of the transformers movies I think I’ll be okay. That’s not saying the plot doesn’t work, personally it took me awhile to read because one I didn’t want the story to end and two I’m a sucker for a HEA Happily Ever After and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I related to this story on so many levels, I think we all can in a way; what young student hasn’t had a thing for a teacher, or for someone in authority in general. Ivory the young pianist and Emeric the handsome professor, Emeric and Ivory… took me longer to get that than it should have. This type of story I’ve seen done in thirty minutes or late less in places but points for the author flushing it out a bit.

It should also be noted it was a bit unbelievable the whole guy has money so he’ll be okay in the end aspect, yes it’s tiresome; how these books get written is beyond me but women eat this stuff up. Trust me I don’t have Emeric’s bank roll or dominant nature outside the bedroom but the last time I propositioned an eighteen-year-old woman… it was not well received. It was also somewhat new for a male protagonist to respect certain boundaries, not saying good or bad just different since most of the stories can be all sorts of hot with the woman down to do just about anything.

Again the book was nothing really mind blowing or earth shattering but it gets you from here to there and without the convenience of simply skipping ahead you discover some quite developed characters. To me this book was hearing my favorite song after a long time, schoolgirl and a naughty teacher; yeah I blame “Reality Kings” and Pawn such and such but that’s another video.

So what’s the concept… stop me if you heard this one, young student seduced by teacher and teacher that wants her, then doesn’t, then goes all Willy Wonka “Stop. Don't. Come back.”, then sex. Throw in the whole traitor girlfriend, poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks, sexual abuse, a murder and you got yourself a story.

There is plenty of sex, and if you need a prop, a piano makes quite the good setup, the soundtrack is great, from classic pieces to rock that I have on my iPhone right now. Dark Notes takes elements both from things in the daily news to the let’s say fantastic, namely Ivory’s luck and again the rich man story line; I like the fact that Ivory wasn’t portrayed as the innocent virgin type. When you discover Emeric’s backstory you find it hard to look at him as some lecherous perverted master though he with great respect.

Of all the things that can disturb someone about this book… not to give anything away but I like animals a lot more that most people. You saw the full circle of Joanne and Ivory from a mile away, that was too good a cliché not to use, the good news is it was more a side note than an oh wow moment. Also the whole follow your dreams, don’t let anybody stop you, inspirational moments… that’s how you know this isn’t your typical porn, the girl would usually do him just for the good grades.

The teasing is pretty good, between Emeric and Ivory, the witty repartee with Ivory and a few of her bulling classmates, and of course how Stogie protects her from big bad Emeric. There is a loose end to tie up here and there, seems to me people would love to talk despite the consequences so the idea that everyone’s dirty secrets are keeping the peace is a bit weird.

If you are a typical porno aficionado because make no mistake this is porn and you actually watch the girl’s interview or that two-minute interlude of finding out what the girl needs, this is a great book. Minus the I’m just a poor girl nobody loves me and the I just so happen to have an excuse to get rid of you portions, I would have rated it higher.

Some people might be uncomfortable with the age difference between Emeric and Ivory, I mentioned Transformers did quite the job trying to explain that sexual relationship and Ivory being seventeen and Emeric twenty-seven… I’ve seen worse, (she was eighteen I was thirty-one yikes). There is also the backstory of Ivory’s abuse and her life prior to Emeric, some of it was bad, some of it turned me on but I won’t say which; I also have to wonder about the ending, was this the author’s way of trying to ease the collective conscience, I mean HEA sure, but the perfect ending?

I seriously doubt anyone has parents so perfect or would be as open sexually; I don’t talk to my parents about sex, never have, never will and if most people knew what I was into, it didn’t turn out so well for Emeric and he was having consensual sex, I wrote a poem so I know exactly where his character was coming from. The redemption of a certain character was a nice change of pace and while Dark Notes is a standalone, much like Deliver also from Pam Godwin there is room for a sequel though I haven’t read the sequel to Deliver to be fair. Last I can’t stress this enough while this book is awesome, books like this rarely work if the male protagonist isn’t rich, a superstar of some sort, or at least much better off than his woman but that’s just the way of the world I guess.

Ivory’s sexual maturity moves fast but has to considering her circumstances and as a guy I can only wish I find a girl like her that’s into poets because I know nothing about pianos. If I had to sum this title up with a song since the book does it so well, I would pick Dirty Little Secret.

This is the 2nd book I read from this author . Both were from the same subgenre, taboo/forbidden romance . ❌️

I have conflicted feelings🤔 about her writing and narrative structure.

I LOVE how she mix POVs . The male POvs are just delightful and at the correct moment.
She nails to perfection the initial stage . Where the romance is yet to be developed, and you can see how the relationship unravels between her characters.

The forbidden part, the conflict , the " I want her but I can't have her " is outstanding👏 and done 👏 quite👏 well.

The problem I had in both books comes after the characters pass this part and are finally together and accept their relationship.

The male character becomes a carcass, a shelf without anything new to add, and if he had a personality before, now is a simp for the female.

In both books, the same happened .

The MMC was so interesting and conflicted at the beginning, but when he gets the girl he transforms himself in this 2020 cristian grey version, and the sex scenes become boring and predictable.

In this book, it wasn't so obvious, but the problem was still there .

Talking about the sex scenes, the same problem persists. She writes ✍️ exquisite ✍️ foreplay ✍️scenes, but the parts when they are doing it are like Am I missing something?? 🤌

Idk, maybe it is just her style that isn't for me, but being the foreplay so good is like I expect more when they get to the real thing .

Don't get me wrong, the sex scenes are one chapter long but is not the length of the scenes, but how she describes them that is not of my liking .

The other problem I see is the female protagonist . They are always just too perfect . Yes, here the girl has a trauma was raped etc , but HOW she was described in the male POV is what annoys me .

Instead of putting emphasis on the possessiveness part or maybe in just casual things the girl does that makes him like her , the author aaalways highlights physical attributes .

For example , an author who gets this right is Rina Kent . When she writes male Povs, she talks about the girl physique, but her males are obsessive about just little things, or manners .. and her males are not constantly talking about her physique but instead thinking about what they are going to do to the female in question.

So overall, I think this isn't a bad book, probably will appeal to a lot of you, and my rating is based only on subjective considerations.

Dark Notes by Pam Godwin is one of my favourite books by her. I have read so many of her books now, and have love them all- but this is definitely one of her best. This is the second time I’ve read it and loved it just as much as the first time. This is a forbidden romance, a student/teacher relationship which takes the reader on a journey of violence, abuse, dominance, heartbreak, emotion, chemistry, passion, tension, BDSM situations, secrets, kink, drama, suspense, shocks, twists, horrible situations, and all with fantastic characters.
Ivory Westbrook is in her senior year at an elite high school specializing in performing arts. She is a bit of an outcast, not fitting in with the other students because she’s from the wrong side of the tracks. She’s had a very difficult childhood and can’t wait to graduate so she can leave it all behind. But all that hinges on her earning a scholarship at an exclusive Music academy. She’s a gifted musician at the top of her class, so that shouldn’t be a problem- right? But with hidden agendas and others gunning for that top spot- things are not going to be easy. Especially when she has a new music teacher to deal with.
Emeric Marceaux has just started a new job as music teacher, after losing his previous position due to a scandalous indiscretion. He’s determined to keep his head down and do everything he can to keep this job. He has a clear vision of what’s expected of him and he is ready to get started. What he isn’t expecting is an alluring new music student who puts a serious chink in his plans. Will he remain professional at all times, or will she bring out his passionate, darker side?
I was captivated right from the very beginning. The story is electric, the characters are superb, the writing is masterful- add the darker, shocking and violent scene and OMG I was sitting on the edge of my seat devouring every word!!!
    Brilliant!!!

    Thank you, Ms. Godwin!

Dark Notes by Pam Godwin is a hypnotic and provocative contemporary dark romance that explores healing through a forbidden, student-teacher, age-gap romance. Despite the seemingly simple premise, this story is emotional and unputdownable! I absolutely loved it!

“It’s universally known that the more forbidden something is, the more desirable it becomes.”

Ivory Westbrooke is a 17-year-old pianist, enrolled at Le Moyne, a prestigious high school, with her eyes set on a scholarship to an elite university and, ultimately, a career as a musician. But her day to day circumstances are much different for her than her peers; life has tested her resilience and scarred her heart for years. Her goals are more than just an aspiration, they are an escape plan. Emeric Merceaux is the new teacher at Le Moyne, taking over for Ivory's previous mentor.. which makes him the one that could help make or break her dreams.

These two have a ten year age gap, and with Ivory just over the cusp of the age of consent, this romance has the potential to challenge its readers. Personally, I think the dynamic between Emeric and Ivory is developed with such intention and care for its questionable nature... These two characters come to life on the page, and their romance blossoms from simple infatuation to something profound, meaningful and heartwarming.

The positivity in this book surrounding a certain word that Amazon doesn't like is everything to me. I absolutely love when an author can successfully explore more deviant behaviours with care, positivity and an emphasis on consent. This is the best representation of BDSM that I've come across, and it only made me fall harder for Emeric and Ivory. It's also one of the hottest romances I've read in awhile. Seriously, if you like BDSM representation in romance ... the intimate scenes are nothing short of delicious.

“She’s fantasia in the flesh, unbound to convention, vibrating beneath my hands and begging to be directed.”

Emeric landed a spot on my list of top tier book boyfriends. I'm obsessed with his intensity, his passion and his flare for discipline. Ivory intoxicates him and he cannot look away, despite the risk. He becomes obsessive, possessive and invasive in the best way. His unwavering dedication to her and her needs made me swoon over and over.

He also plays Metallica and System of a Down on his piano to de-stress. Need I say more?

This romance has one of the most satisfying and heartwarming conclusions I've come across in a long time. It's a bit of a journey to get there, but Emeric and Ivory's HEA is so worth it. Their story will live on in my head forever.

Of course, Godwin's lyrical prose lends perfectly to this story; it's steeped in musical themes and language, right down to the vibrant New Orleans setting. Every Godwin book I've read so far is like this. Her writer's voice is so adaptable and immersive, and creates a unique aesthetic with each story's theme.

I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys forbidden dark romance, the student-teacher trope, BDSM, age-gaps, emotional contemporary romance and stories of healing.
