Dark Shadows over Coronation Close: The latest installment in Lizzie Lane's heartbreaking saga series Kindle Edition
The next exciting, gritty book from Lizzie Lane in the bestselling Coronation Close saga series.
There’s talk of war and dark clouds fester on the horizon...
Bristol 1938
A shadowy presence overshadows Coronation Close, watching and waiting. Jenny Crawford is the first to notice the stranger and wonders why his attention is fixed on Thelma Dawson’s house. When challenged he makes a hasty retreat.
Meanwhile Thelma is having trouble with her precocious daughter Mary who is about to leave school and start work. Mary considers herself an adult but to Thelma she’s still a little girl; an attitude resented by her daughter.
Unknown to her mother, Mary is secretly befriended by a stranger, an older man who treats her as the grown up she thinks she is. But what does this man want with this naïve young girl?
Problems shared are problems halved. Jenny and Thelma certainly share theirs as the shadow of war rolls over from Europe and nothing seems certain.
Perfect for the fans of Rosie Clarke, Fenella Miller and Kitty Neale

About the author

I am at an age when I often evaluate my life and what I've done. I grew up on a tough council estate in Bristol where members of my family worked in the tobacco industry. Those years were the basis for my Coronation Close series.
I was a rocker in the sixties and looked good in leather. My late husband rode a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. When I wasn't wearing motorcycle leathers I wore a mini skirt and am sure my hair was longer than my skirt.
Having been taught to type at thirteen years of age I ended up working in an office. I hated it but needs must. I had a baby daughter to look after plus we bought a house so it was a case of two wages being better than one.
Horses and dogs figured greatly in my life. I used to breed and show Irish Red Setters and regularly qualified for Crufts.
Horses were really my daughter's bag. Although I loved them I was a lousy rider, but I could draw them. Used to be quite good at drawing but haven't done much for a long time.
Yes, I am a writer, but initially and right up until now, I am a storyteller. I used to tell my siblings stories when we should have been sleeping. That's what I still am.
It began in the early nineties. I was broke and jobs were few and far between. So I took the advice of an American friend and called myself a writer.
Over the next thirty years I wrote my socks off with some success. I won the BBC New Writers' Award with a script and for three years had my own newspaper column.
I had my first book published in 1994. I think it's now close on seventy.
No longer dog breeding or riding horses, in 2011 husband and I sold up and sailed away. For five years we lived on a sailing yacht, down through the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean. Very off grid! Very much the gypsy life. There was nothing like sailing beneath a sky full of stars or anchored in a tranquil bay, tapping away on my laptop - another book in the offing. Thank goodness for e-mail!
I now live in Bath, not far from where Jane Austen used to live. I am alone but never alone. I have the characters I bring to life in my mind and thence into my books.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2024I think Lizzie has something up her sleeve for there we’re a lot of loose ends left in this book. Is Bert going to ask Thelma to marry him? Jenny and Robin .. will Robin break free from Doris once and for all without having to go broke? Than there is Cath’s brother moving in to number 5…. what’s up with that? So much going on.
Lizzie please don’t leave us hanging on love Coronation Close!
This is a great series of a time where neighbors were like family, times were so different but we can still relate to what goes in life.. from being. First time Grandmother… loosing a loved one ..forgiveness and understanding….and more.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024All this series has been wonderful. The inky problem I have is name continuity. In this book Thelma's daughter in law is called Maria, yet in the last one her name was Gina. Also Robins wife went from Doreen to Doris in this book. Also in the last book Robin's name became Robert for a couple of pages! That is my only annoyance! Also why I didn't give it 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024Another excellent book in the series. Love to read how all the people on the street are doing. Looking forward to the next book
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2024I was real excited to read this. I read a previous book of this series and I loved it.
There are some real serious topics dealt between the pages of the book. But Lizzie Lane has a special writing talent that accomplishs this task in a tasteful way.
Jenny, Thelma and all the neighbors of Coronation Close are doing their best to live week by week. I really love both Jenny and Thelma. They are so different but are the best of friends. I don't always agree with their decisions. And I find myself wanting to shout "No, don't". But they can't hear me.
I hope there will be more to come. I loved the story. Thanks to Boldwood Books.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024I liked all the drama but things seemed left out. For example, when Roy came home to die, nothing was written about his death or funeral. It just said it in an awkward way many chapters later. I didn't like the writing in this book as much previous books in Coronation Close series.

Me he gustado mucho el primer libro, pero no tanto los dos siguientes. Aunque es un libro muy facil de leer, y el precio muy bueno estaria ideal para senoritas jovenes.

Loved this new book I'm hoping there will be more books and a very happy ending for Thelma and Jenny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping story.
Another chapter in their Coronation Close, very well written and holds the readers attention. Thelma and Jenny are still good friends and support each other through anything that crops up for both of them. Their families are growing up and shed different obstacles to overcome. Jenny's husband Roy has taken ill and been dismissed from the arm, coming home he's half the man who went away, taking a turn for the worse he passes leaving Jenny a widow and a certain freedom. Robin is not a free man, but loves her dearly, but will he ever be free of his overbearing wife? I recommend this book and hope there will be another chapter in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
Jenny and Thelma best friends and neighbours living
a relatively happy life in pre -war Coronation Close. Jenny's husband is still away in the army which really is a good thing as there is no longer any love between them. Thelma is still seeing Bert, and is gradually getting over the terrible rape that happened to her. All their daughters are growing up and for one of the girls a surprise friendship brings both happiness and despair.
