While filming a school project inside a ruined church, three teenagers make a horrific discovery: a severed head, left as part of a demonic ritual.
Before they can call the police, they are brutally attacked—and one of the teenagers is taken.
DCI Kett and the Extreme Crime Task Force know it's only a matter of time before the missing girl meets a terrifying fate. But as they hunt for her they find themselves caught up in one of the most dangerous cases of their careers—a living nightmare of conspiracy, sacrifice and cold-blooded murder.
Kett must explore the darkest parts of the country, the human soul, and himself to get to the heart of this unholy mystery.
But how can he catch a killer who might be the Devil himself?

Alex Smith wrote his first book when he was six. It wasn’t particularly good, but it did have some supernatural monsters in it. His latest books, the DCI Robert Kett thrillers, have monsters in them too, although these monsters are very human, and all the more terrifying for it. In between, he has published fourteen novels for children and teenagers under his full name, Alexander Gordon Smith—including the number one bestselling series Escape From Furnace, which is loved by millions of readers worldwide and which is soon to become a motion picture. He lives in Norwich with his wife and three young daughters.

About the author

Hi there, and welcome to my Amazon author page! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my books. If you want to be the first to know about new releases then feel free to follow me by clicking on the follow button on my book pages or on my author page.
I've been a writer for almost all my life. I wrote my first book when I was six, and even though it wasn't very good it did have monsters in it. It was a sign of things to come, as I spent most of my twenties and thirties writing horror books for children and teenagers under my full name, Alexander Gordon Smith, including the award-winning series Escape From Furnace. It was only after I had my three daughters that I thought about writing a series of thrillers about a detective with young children, and DCI Robbie Kett was born.
I live in Norwich with my family, where I spend half of my time writing and the other half trying to keep up with my three girls.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024Adding a touch of horror to the already wonderful world of DCI Kett and team? YES PLEASE. Such a great read, non-stop action, mystery, and straight out laughter at times. Clare has very solidly become one of my very favorite characters; I think we need to get him and Bob Hoon together soon….
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024I'm not a fan of horror. And there was bound to be explanation for those aspects. However, for me the story really dragged in the middle because of the occult stuff. The story really picked up and became the interesting and well written Kett novel that is so satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2024DCI Kett and the gang are back in another chilling suspenseful, harrowing mystery. Love the plot and the irreverent humor.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024This book was amazing and full of action. Kett is doubting his own sanity and seeing signs everywhere. The plot really takes twists and turns before finally concluding with a “family” get together and a hint of what’s going to be in the next book. This doesn’t dwell much on the characters so if you haven’t read the earlier books, I would suggest you go back.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2024Funny, serious, thrilling...all this and more in the Kett series. Great reads, interesting characters, really good plots. Just all-around good stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2024This book leans too much to the horror story line.
Mr. Smith’s books always have a hard edge to them but this one crossed the line and made it hard to concentrate on the story.
Clare’s treatment of his team has built over the series and is to the point that his actions make me wonder if that entire law enforcement organization is just plain incompetent for allowing him to continue - and why anyone would work for him (he has too few redeeming qualities to the point he is just a nasty character). I end up skipping many paragraphs where he is key; prior books in this series that was not the case but he has become SO tiresome the story plods when he is up to his cruel antics. It’s one thing if those outside the Unit cast dispersions on the team but when their ‘boss’ does so, how can they keep doing the very tough job that Mr Smith lays out for them in his storyline?
I suggest skipping this one unless you are a fan of Horror and/or like seeing the other characters in the story continuing to be beat down.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024Alex Smith is a superb writer of all things scary and things that bump in the night. DCI Kett and crew are battling this evil throughout the series. Best books out there for horror. Thank you for another great book to read late at night. Alex, I ordered your sisters book on your recommendation. Awaiting book 17 in December.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024This story is my favorite of the whole series. It left me breathless. The plot is awesome and keep me guessing. I was a little scared through a good portion of the book. It was a total thrill ride. The chemistry between the characters is great. They work well together. Sometimes, they make me laugh. No spoilers, but there's a scene where I laughed so hard, tears were running down my face. I highly recommend this whole series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good!
As always, Alex Smith manages to build up suspense to the point where you just can't put the book down....even when dinner is burning up, the kettle boiling over and you should have driven to do some urgent last-minute-shopping ages ago.
Read it! Read them all.
What I like best, is that we get to know the personal history, relationships and trouble- physical and otherwise. What I don't like is, that the female officers are painted as highly intelligent, knowing every last bit there is to know, while the male ones are either slightly naïve, big tanks with nothing but strength and looks , slightly confused, elderly superiours or nice but clumsy. Please stop the feminist bullshit!
Other than that...I love these stories and Alex Smith has a way wirh words I really like. Captures me everytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars There’s One Big Problem With This Book
There’s One Big Problem With This Book, & that is that it’s just TOO good!
I don’t know how the authors going to follow this up with the next book & surpass what his ever growing list of fanatical fans are going to be clamoring for!
It’s not often I stay up until 3am reading, then start reading again the instant I wake up until I’ve finished a book, but this did it for me, the only quicker way would of been an audiobook version playing while I slept, but considering the subject matter of this book, ‘reading’ it via osmosis while I was asleep could of had dire consequences!
If your already a fan of these books, your going to be thrilled to see this has just shy of 500pages & all your favorite family members are present & ready for duty, well mostly, except for Duke, Pete, Robbie & pretty much everyone else, even the big (pantless) kahuna himself Clare seems to be having issues, but Savage is always going to save the day, after all, that’s what we women are best at!
If you’ve never read these books before, lucky you! Because you now have 16 books to fall in love with, laugh your head off over, & be guesstimating your little touché away into the early hours, think 3am, as a starting point of getting any sleep! You MUST read them in order, to not do so would be to lose all the backstories & the character development, which besides ruining the books, would be an awful waste of these characters time making sure the author got it all bloody well right!
This is a 13 ************* out of 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this series...
love the characters, the storylines are compelling, love the countless twists and turns. What I’m quite sick of is Colin Clare. I’d like to see a Superintendent who supports the team without the inane nonsense he consistently spews. Tossing this and tossing that. And he’s occasionally not wearing pants? What? One more thing that I’m sorry may return is Hollenbeck (the character’s name may be Maynard). No thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't get enough of these books
OMG, this was so thrilling and page turning. Every book seems to be as good as the last. It takes you from laughter to fear. This book gave me shivers, so many different feelings, your crawling through the same emotions as the team. I feel every bit of Robbies pain. God bless Alex for being such a good writer and thank goodness I found these books. Can't wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I have read all of the DCI Kett books, and I have to say this is one of the best in the series. It had everything you'd want. Great storyline, comedy - I laughed out loud in parts, was genuinely creeped out, couldn't put it down, the characters were built up even more, plus there were fantastic links to another favourite author and to previous books in the series. Fantastic!! It had made me want to read other novels Alex has written. Great book :)
