4.5 out of 5 stars 21,622 ratings

Do you know who's knocking at your door?

After a violent home invasion in the remote wilds of Glen Coe leaves a family of four dead, DCI Jack Logan and his team are brought in to lead the manhunt.

But, when one of the victims is revealed to be one half of legendary 1980s Glasgow-based comedy double act, ‘Neeps & Tatties’, Logan is forced to leave the Highlands and head back to his old stomping ground.

He may have spent his career dealing with the worst humanity has to offer, but to find out who killed Archie Tatties and his family, Logan will have to confront his most terrifying challenge yet - the seedy world of Scottish light entertainment.

An Isolated Incident is the eleventh book in JD Kirk’s internationally bestselling DCI Logan crime fiction series. Perfect for fans of Chris Brookmyre, Stuart Macbride, and Alex Smith.

JD Kirk lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and a number of sturdy umbrellas. He also doesn't exist. JD is, in fact, the pen name of award-winning author, comic book writer and screenwriter, Barry Hutchison, who also, coincidentally, lives in the Highlands with his wife, two children, and the aforementioned umbrellas.

He has no idea what the 'JD' bit stands for.

Interesting that these quirky detectives manage to get along. Little family tragedies and dramas, real workplace interactions. Great character building over time! I’m learning a lot about Scotland too. Not just depending on the book details but checking them as well. Nicely done!!

These are books written with tight plots, interesting characters who progress and grow with the series, and some of the funniest lines I've ever read. No spoiler alert, but: "...it would be a pain in the arse to wind..." made me laugh out loud. I can see the settings, the incident rooms. and the great coat, and feel the weather.
Waiting for the next book. I don't do Kindle.

I’ve been guzzling these books down since I started book one, and I love them, the characters & the stories are as good as any ‘top author’ & way more than I expected from them.

I can at times tend to choose books based on cover images, when the authors that are not known to me I mean, generally bad covers can mean the books are no better with our world of books now where everyone & their goat can publish an EBook on Amazon.

This author is definitely a cut above the rest, VERY good plots, a sea full of red herrings that can drive you a little barmy (can’t you tell!) twists, turns, blindsides are all waiting to be solved by a fabulous team of detectives, or the reader, good luck with that though as they’re really REALLY tricky to solve!

As for the cast of characters, purely brilliant.

Theres a leading detective as tough & bold as the stories can tolerate before blowing a gasket of pure awe. His ‘partner in crime’ stabilizers the above antics making sure that no one dies, loses their job & whilst doing so has a running streak of eating that has to be read to believe!

3 more detectives are working with them and provide an amazingly large array of things that are sometimes going right, and a large array of things that are always going wrong & both are always doing it at the most opportune moments!

There’s young love, dwarfs, vomiting, having henchmen dangling off rooftops, Add in an antihero to rival any of Marvels, humor is a constant, well, maybe not when they’re telling someone their mother/father/whatever has died a horrific death and they need a toothbrush for DNA, that’d be in bad taste ;)

So what are you waiting for? Stop reading me and go get the books, but IMPORTANT read them in order, whilst there’s a different crime in each one, the characters lives etc are much MUCH better that way.

Right, I’m off to start the next book & I’ll take my little red fishies, my spideyweb, my goat (not sure where he came from..) and I’ll take the dwarf too since no one’s claiming him!

Murder mysteries are not my usual genre, but having read some of the author's other books in different genres, I decided to give the first DCI Logan book a try. Here I am, ten books later, reviewing the eleventh in the series (and looking forward to the twelfth).

J.D. Kirk gives the reader not only an engaging mystery story, but also an excellent sense of the Scottish locations where the stories take place. The characters each have their own quirks, flaws, and strengths, making them relatable, even if some are less likable than others. The overall result is a great read, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader on their figurative toes, and a satisfying ending that leaves the series open for the next book.

Honestly, the only negative thing I can say about this book, is that a number of us are suspecting that J.D. Kirk has Barry Hutchinson tied up in a basement somewhere, which explains why we're still waiting for the next Space Team, Sidekicks, or Dan Deadman book to come out.

I've read all of the 11 books in this series and can't wait for the next one. I hope JD Kirk writes quickly -- I need my DCI Jack Logan fix! The plots just keep getting better, and the characters are beautifully and realistically drawn. They make me laugh out loud at least once per book, a rare treat when reading murder mysteries. Be sure to start with the first in the series and go from there. You won't be sorry.

I’ve read all of the DCI Jack Logan books and An Isolated Incident is as good if not better than all of the others. The thing I like best about this series, other than the mysteries that I can never figure out, is the ensemble of characters that support the main character. Their unique personalities and lives are woven throughout the story lines and add interest to the books and want me to continue with the series, partly to read another mystery and partly to follow the lives of all the characters. If you like this type of book, then J D Kirk’s DCI Jack Logan books are for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect balance of crime and dark comedy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 26, 2021
I'm gradually working my way through the Jack Logan books and loving them all. My husband had read this one a few weeks earlier and had been very impressed (yet again!) so I started this with high expectations.
The novel is 402 pages split into 46 chapters in the same format as usual - why change a winning formula?
The book picks up almost immediately from the end of the last novel which is good news for the longevity of the characters - avoiding any "real time" character progression problems that many crime novelists seem to encounter.
The humour that this author uses in his writing is amazing. He creates jokes and then brings them back again and again as a stand up comedian would - "where's the haggis" and "peat hill" as two examples which made me laugh out loud.
Delightfully Bob Hoon is in this story from the start with some imaginative phrases that made me cry with laughter.
Serious issues are obviously a major part of the plot as this is a multiple murder case and no one should be under any allusion that this is a comedy novel. JD Kirk uses humour as a way of the police team (and the reader) dealing with the horrors that are encountered - this seems very realistic and amplifies both elements.
As in previous books, the author creates personal challenges for the recurring characters - in this book they are predominantly medical which are very normal problems that many people face and always difficult to cope with.
The dialogue is well written. It is said using Scottish accents (some heavier than others) and a few phrases which are worth saying slowly in your head just for a joy of them!! The accents are never difficult to read though and always enhance the reading experience rather than detract from it.

Well, that story had me guessing. Like the detectives in this book I could not work out who the killer was, sometimes I can. And of course, there is always some humour, so a good read. Looking forward to the next in line.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Stars to JD Kirk for Logan and Team
Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2021
I hope this series never ends- I just finished this instalment and want to reread it to savour all the funny bits and the characters that are so richly drawn they have become family, not fiction. The plot zigs and zags with surprises to an unexpected and satisfying conclusion and a cliff to hang over until next time.

I have enjoyed all the DI Logan books and hope the series continues. Characterization and storyline are excellent. There are many unexpected outcomes and lots of humourous dialogue and situations. However, readers averse to swearing may not be amused ! The audible book is very well narrated with talented rendering of various Scottish accents. Thank you JD Kirk and Angus King (the narrator) for many entertaining hours spent reading or listening.
