- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2024I'm a huge Onoh fan, and with this dazzling novel, the Queen of African Horror delivers possibly her best work yet. WHERE THE DEAD BRIDES GATHER is simply brilliant, filled with haunting imagery and otherworldly terrors that will linger somewhere in my mind forever. Highly recommended to all fans of great horror and amazing fiction!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2024Once more, Ms. Onoh takes us to the haunted jungles of Nigeria for a ghostly adventure. This time, our young heroine, Bata, must traverse not only the realms of the dead, but the treacherous world of adults. Sometimes scary, sometimes heart-warming, sometimes humorous, Bata’s adventures resound with her authentic, youthful voice.
Indeed, this book seems aimed at a reader of about Bata’s age—ten, then eleven—rather than an adult reader. We see the life in a modern, but rustic village in the hinterlands of Africa through a child’s eyes. A child reading such a story would easily relate to her fears and misgivings.
All her young life, Bata has been an unusual child. Plagued by nightmares and fits of screaming that worry the superstitious villagers, her condition suddenly worsens. Attacked by a demonic ghost-bride—the ghost of a young woman who died just before being wed and therefore finding herself incomplete—Bata is saved by becoming a ghost-sentinel. A powerful spirit who is tasked with protecting living brides from those that are dead.
So unusual is Bata that she is taken to the land of the Dead Brides, a mystical and wonderful place filled with young women who cannot pass on until their husbands-to-be take on a new wife—but some of these brides seek vengeance on the new brides who will take her place. Presiding over the Dead Brides is a terrifying apparition, part goddess and part demon. Yet she befriends Bata and grants her impressive supernatural powers.
Actually, the reasoning that Onoh gives for the Dead Brides is a bit convoluted. I’m not sure if this is authentic Igbo lore—which she has used so well in her previous books—or if it comes from her own creative imagination. But the impression is that a Dead Bride must go through a more elaborate set of rules and regulations than any other ghost.
I give this book two different ratings. For adults, I think a score of four is appropriate, as the adult mind will attempt to apply logic to the situation and fall short. However, for younger readers, willing to suspend disbelief and go along on a wild, supernatural adventure, it definitely earns a big five stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2025I am always up for a good horror story. This does not disappoint. One of the best parts of reading , for me, is to be able to travel to these countries with traditions and customs that we do not have here and this book does exactly that. There is a reason why this author is the Queen of African Horror. As soon as the stage was set I knew I couldn’t sleep. Amazing. !!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024This feels like a coming-of-age crossed with a creepy romcom and a strong twist of PG13 horror movie. There are ghosts and possessions, powerful guardian Goddesses, and one ten year old girl who, having died as a child, is able to see the spiritual world. Bata is a compassionate child who — for the most part — views even the “evil” brides with sympathy and compassion.
The ghost brides are women who die before their weddings spend their time in what is either a paradise or a creepy purgatory filled with wedding feasts, wearing their bridal gowns, trapped in a perpetual pre-wedding moment, waiting until their grooms remarry so that they can possess the new bride and say their “I dos.” Good brides find closure with this, and move on to their reincarnation; evil brides are those who cannot let go, who want to linger in the body of the new wife and continue to live, either out of love for the groom or hatred.
It’s interesting, certainly. Told through Bata’s eyes, a Nigerian girl living in the 1970s torn between a Christian mother and a father who believes in the old ways (and the fact that Bata is living proof the old ways still hold power), there is a lot left between the lines. She sees the world around her, colored through her own wants and fears (which are mostly to have lots of good food, wear lovely clothing, and not be possessed by ghosts — and I support that desire), and that deliberate blindness causes strife with her mother, her sister, and her step mother (her father’s second wife.)
It’s well written and the world building — both the spiritual and the mortal — is very well done. There’s a touch of gore, but it’s neither graphic nor overwhelming. I think this could be a fun YA book while still being interesting enough for older readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024Reading more horror books with BIPOC characters and BIPOC authors is important for me. So, when I saw the chance to jump on this book, I took it. And I do not regret it.
I really really enjoyed this book as a whole. The whole concept of a ghost collector and the dark fantasy aspects were top tier.
Thanks for the ARC, publisher and Netgalley
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2024There is a big battle near the beginning and I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. I didn't expect to have such a uniquely populated fantasy world to experience. This book was a new experience. I didn't know what I was getting into, but I enjoyed the experience. If you like a unique fantasy world and people battling for what is right, you will like this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024In Where the Dead Brides Gather, Nuzo Onoh presents a dark fantasy through the eyes and thoughts of a young girl, caught between a world of miraculous powers where Powerful deities work to protect Earth brides, and a patriarchal family ruled with an iron hand by her father. Fighting for the approval of her mother, step-mother, and father, stricken by violent dreams, Bata is plunged into a world where she must fight for the lives and marriages of the women of her village, while alternately being praised, and avoided by friends and family, while fighting against powers no one but she can see.
Very entertaining, and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favourite author
Where the Dead Brides Gather is a mesmerising story of contrasts—between faith and doubt, family and isolation, innocence and maturity, and life and death. Ten-year-old Bata’s journey is both haunting and poignant as she navigates these divides with courage beyond her years. The author’s prose is exquisite, blending beauty with dread in a way that feels both magical and chilling. With vivid imagery and profound emotional depth, this is a story that lingers, making it an absolute must-read for fans of gothic, thought-provoking tales. I found it genuinely impossible to put it down.
