Death in Sensible Circumstances: A Sense and Sensibility Mystery (Miss Mary Investigates Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 63 ratings

A Jane Austen-inspired mystery, set in the world of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, being the fourth novel in the Miss Mary Investigates series.

When Mary Bennet befriends Elinor Dashwood, she expects to become part of the young lady’s circle and be introduced to her friends and relations. She does not expect that one of this circle should die, far too young, and in most unfortunate circumstances. Worse still, Elinor is secretly in love with one of the suspects, Edward Ferrars, and he is inconveniently engaged to somebody else. When an investigator is called in to assist, Mary is more surprised still.

Alexander Lyons expects to find death and deceit in his line of work, but he does not expect to come face to face with Mary, who hasn’t replied to his letters of late. What is she doing in London? And how is she involved with this sorry business of murder? Still, despite the tension between the two, they make a good team as they seek to unravel the mystery surrounding them.

From the elegant drawing rooms of Mayfair to the reeking slums of St. Giles, the two must use every bit of wit and logic they possess to uncover a killer, all the while trying to puzzle out the workings of their own hearts.

Join Mary Bennet, Lizzy’s often overlooked sister from
Pride and Prejudice, and her intriguing and handsome friend Alexander Lyons, as they are pulled into the world of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility in this, their latest adventure.

Having read the other books in this series, I have grown fond of the principal characters, Mary Bennett and the private investigator Alexander Lyons, and am fascinated by their growing closeness. At times, I questioned the degree to which prim and proper Ms. Mary Bennett would transform into such an enterprising and daring young woman, at times with sensibilities almost too modern for her time, but for the most part, the author has created a believable and likable heroine. Like the author's previous books, it is a skillful reimagining of parts of a Jane Austen novel with an intriguing mystery thrown in. The author does not disappoint. Moreover, once again, her careful and thorough research provides a solid backdrop to the story. I also appreciated the notes in the back of the book that offered additional historical and cultural details about London in the early 19th century.

Death in Sensible Circumstances by Riana Everly is another fun mystery featuring Jane Austen's Mary Bennet and the detective Alexander Lyons. The murder mystery takes place in London. What appears at first to be a mugging, turns into a mystery involving numerous suspects. Fun Austen characters populate the mystery. Edward Ferrars is accused of murdering his brother, but Elinor Dashwood is certain the man she loves would never do such a thing. Lyons, with Mary's help, is attempting to prove that Ferrars has been framed. But has he? And if he is not the murderer, who is. Suspense as well as humor and the delightful Austen characters and time period make this a must read for Austen lovers as well as mystery lovers.

What a refreshing enjoyable read. I love the stories of mystery and intread, romance and adventure that Riana Everly puts in all her books. Love Mary being the center. Do not miss odc at all. I really like including cross overs of Austen's characters from her other books. Well done, and a must read!
