A new hope for a peaceful future
An old enemy that won’t let go
Kira Demirci left her homeworld of Apollo pursued by assassins seeking revenge for her victories in the war against the Brisingr Kaiserreich. Now she has a new home and a new role: as the nova fighter wing commander aboard the mercenary carrier Conviction under Captain John Estanza.
Conviction is on retainer with the royal family of Redward, who encourage Kira and her pilots to make themselves a new home on the frontier planet. But there is a reason they want to tie the mercenary carrier’s crew more tightly to themselves and stormclouds are brewing on the horizon.
Those clouds break when a Redward warship goes missing on a standard patrol. Conviction and her fighters are sent out to find the destroyer—but instead they find a deadly plot by old enemies that will bring down the Syntactic Cluster in fire and war.
Unless Kira Demirci can do the impossible.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020This is volume 2 of an on-going series. While it is, I think, readable, I do recommend starting with volume 1, Conviction. You learn a lot about the antagonists in the first book which is only referred to in passing here, as the reader is expected to know it already. And besides that, it’s also a good book.
This new entry in the series maintains the high standards set by volume 1 in terms of character development and consistency. Without getting into spoilers, Kira very definitely has a character development arc. She’s not going to remain just the commander of a fighter squadron for the entire series. In this book we’re starting to see her develop into a leader, who I expect will be a major player in the Cluster, possibly on a bigger stage.
If you’re here for action, this book has that in plenty, without setting quite a breakneck pace. The combat scenes are well plotted, and described in just enough detail to feel real without bogging down in tactical details.
Overall it’s a nice balance of combat, politics, and character development. I’m looking forward eagerly to the next installment.

The 2nd novel in a new series by Glynn Stewart Deception further expands on the story of exiled fighter pilots building a new life for themselves as mercenaries. The author does his usual commendable job of world building with complex characters, deftly written action sequences in a sci fi setting that while not exactly 'hard science' it is sufficiently believable and logically consistent 'in world' as to enhance the tale.
Without delving too deeply into the plot this installment expands on the issues uncovered in the first book - a shadowy organization that is attempting to shape the development of human controlled star systems -( a shoutout apparently to the Foundation series by Asimov) and the efforts of the mercenaries and their employer to stop them while establishing a stable agreement and free trade pact among a group of star systems.
The bottom line - another good novel by an author who routinely turns out quality reads. Worth investing your precious dollars - the Shattered Stars series is a must have for any fan of the genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2022If you enjoy a political, tactical and strategic oriented space opra then Deception is the book for you. It's loaded with interesting characters with a variety of implants and capabilities that intermesh across a vast scale of battle. The plot is all about how the small picture details mixes with the big. I enjoyed the way the characters knowledge of what is about to happen next matched what I as the reader discovered. This is why I am willing to give it 5 stars. The fact that I saw no typos and the fact that this story arch is the true foundation of a potentially great scifi epic made this an exceptional Amazon Books read. Excellent work so far Glynn Stewart.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2020An entire star system goes dark.
One of Redward’s most advanced destroyers is missing.
A Kaiserreich heavy cruiser, the single most powerful ship in the Cluster, appears in Ypres on a “survey” mission as Ypres plunges into civil war.
Six Kaiserreich Death Marks, still uncollected.
Aboard the mercenary carrier, Conviction, Commander Kira Demirci leads her Nova fighter group on a search and rescue mission for the missing destroyer and to unravel the mystery around an entire star system going dark. On a humanitarian mission to the Ypres System, Kira runs into a former enemy combatant she saved during the war. When the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place, Queen Sonia enlists Kira to lead a desperate mission to neutralize the Kaiserreich heavy destroyer. A mission based on deception.
A very entertaining read with the strong characters, engaging storyline and plot twists we’ve come to appreciate in Glynn’s stories.
For Milani’s fans, they get more page time in this story. For those that don’t remember Milani, they are that “terrifying (fill in the blank) in the dragon armor.”

- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2021The second book in the Scattered Stars series definitely ups the stakes, with the still shadowy villain making another attempt to push their philosophy into the cluster that Kira has already started to call home. Here she ends up out of her interceptor more than she's in it, but the action scenes are good and the "slow" sections still manage to hang a lot of emotional tension into the scenes. Kira and her friends are against a ticking clock and they know it.
There's still a lack of good character development outside of Kira here. But the plot and the slowly increasing tension make sure that this is a solid tale that truly deserves the appelation "Space Opera". Another 4 star work.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024Our favorites certainly pushed the envelope this time, took big risks, and won very big! The story evolved nicely and built action and excitement steadily. New characters joined the saga, adding further dimensions to this book, and likely creating the grounds for further extensions in future books in the series. Look forward to the next installment in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020Book 2 of the Scattered Stars series is full bore, multilayer action. Glynn gives us a universe of layered politics, technology, and intrigue, with great characters and storytelling. Kira Demerci and her mercenary company of Nova fighters rise to greatness in a battle between a rim alliance and a mysterious organization that uses Harry Sheldon's psychohistory to attempt to bring galactic civilization into their predetermined model of utopia.
A great and satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The next instalment
Deception is the second book from the Scattered Stars series. The book continues to build upon the central story thread and provides a good dose of action along the way. For me, the story was a bit slow to begin with but it picks up and then moves along nicely. I like the writing style of Glynn Stewart which I find very readable and delivers a good balance between the pace and depth of the story which keeps me interested in the characters and their fate. Worth a read.
Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Glynn Stewart tale
So here I am again just having read a great book, and now waiting for the next installment. These tales are so strong, I can still picture the characters and wander along the story lines and back stories in my mind and think about what might happen next. Hmmmm...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Glynn Stewart
For a ripping good science fiction story in a fascinating future universe. The concept of cascading technology from the centre on Sol through thousands of light years is enough to fuel many stories, and you have created characters I am happy to follow through them.
