"Deleted Scenes from the Bestselling Utopian Novel" is a surreal mosaic that transports readers into the heart of a dystopian world that is terrifyingly close to our own.

In Novo Tsarstvo, a remote northern island buried under snow, the senile Tsar rules with lies, an evil professor turns people into pig-faced demons, snow angels become acts of rebellion, black cats are outlawed, television knocks on your door in the morning, and nightmares claw their way into reality. We follow fractured lives of ordinary people: the disillusioned, the resistance, and those caught in between as they navigate the twisted totalitarian landscape and try to stay human in a dehumanising environment. Through their struggles, we confront the nature of truth, violence, and freedom, whilst witnessing the enduring capacity of the human spirit and childlike imagination in the face of oppression.

Experimental in form yet rooted in dystopian tradition, "Deleted Scenes" explores the psychological toll of tyranny through a kaleidoscope of perspectives. The author's prose blends gut-wrenching psychological horror with dark absurdist humour, creating an unsettling yet unforgettable experience.

Vanya Bagaev crafts a narrative that is as politically charged as it is psychologically complex. Poignant, visceral, and uncompromising, "Deleted Scenes" is an act of reflection, an adaptation of lurid dreams that poses the question: amidst the darkest nightmare, is there still hope?

Vanya Bagaev is a writer of literary, speculative, and experimental fiction from Tulubaika. He writes about weird characters in whimsical situations, employing a lot of unhinged dialogue, absurd and dark humour, dreamlike sequences, hysterical surrealism, magical realism, sudden philosophical and psychological romps, stylised prose, often infused with poetry, witty comedy, poignant twists, Russianness, logic and lunacy, literary anarchy, magic degeneracy, and many other sublime matters. 'Deleted Scenes from the Bestselling Utopian Novel' is his first novel. All Vanya's work is available on his website Nova Nevédoma.

"Deleted Scenes from the Bestselling Utopian Novel" is a must-read if you want a visceral understanding of living under unchecked authority. Bagaev writes with such detail and specificity that the reader is grounded in both the physical and emotional aspects of the story. To the point of almost – very effectively – feeling trapped in the story. And the allegories make us nervously aware of the effects - psychological, physical, emotional, intellectual – of authoritarianism. Making you aware why it’s important to fight rather than stay silent.

The author does not condemn specific individuals living under the regime so much as remains vigilantly curious – an autopsy of totalitarianism - and gives voice to the internal psychosis of living under a dictator or any unchecked authority. This authority is creatively investigated from a variety of vantage points, genders, and ages. As always, Bagaev writes riveting sentences that never bore and make you see in a new way, such as describing the eyes of a cat as "diluted tarragon lemonade," or this line, "When time turns to ice, so do the reasons for being happy."

The absurdity and sickness of dictators, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, etc is clearly revealed in this book in such an effective and creative way.

To have a better understanding of the present and potential future, you should experience this book.

(This is a fair review of an eBook ARC provided by Reedsy Discovery.)

If the novels '1984' and 'House of Leaves' had a baby and that baby was raised by Steve Erickson and Cormac McCarthy and then grew up to write a book of interconnected dystopian stories, that book might greatly resemble 'Deleted Scenes from the Bestselling Utopian Novel.'

Like the best experimental fiction, it's not just the words but the composition of the world being built and how efficiently the author can drop us into the surreal without losing us. Even before you begin reading the first story, Bagaev has already structured the framework of his world. The title is cleverly foreboding. The cover art of a women with a tube television set as a head (also a character within [alongside men with pig’s faces, bodies in suitcases, and children hiding under blanketed tables]) effectively sets the stage. The foreword written in the form of a letter from the “Editorial Committee” to “The Illustrious Editor-In-Chief” stating that: “Post-examination, our expert collective determined that the deleted sequence suffered from turgid grandiloquence, non sequiturs and obfuscations, creating a disjointed reading experience,” is your last preparation before entering this dangerously close and brilliantly paced book. A surreal nesting doll set of Bagaev’s making. What comes next is a swirling black mirror-mirror on the wall, a shifting looking glass into modern human's technological ambivalence, authoritarian uprisings, and propensity for violence.

The imagery and urgency of Deleted Scenes… is undeniable. Almost hypnotic. Almost like being in the thralls of a hallucinogenic experience. These intertwined pieces, taking place on a remote island called Novo Tsartsvo (whose literal translation is “New Kingdom”), are at once claustrophobic and mind-expanding, brutal and intimate, terrifying and resilient, hopeful and harrowing. I always felt that Orwell’s '1984' greatly succeeded in showcasing the perils of totalitarian technology and the insidious nature of dictatorship, but the book kept me at an emotional distance with its hyperfocus on international politics and my inability to connect with the characters. 'Deleted Scenes…' delivers on all those strengths yet brings the stories closer. The scenes begin surrealistic enough to hold at an arm’s length but quickly and seamlessly draw you in, until it is difficult to differentiate whether you are under the characters’ skins, or the characters are crawling under yours. And, quite often, I felt both were true, simultaneously.

There is darkness and light within these pages. A suspended sphere of the cautionary us, the roaring of an ice storm building momentum, the stillness of a night just before dawn. Bagaev demonstrates the kind of simmering creativity, layered storytelling, and astute attention to detail that comprise some of the best of our current experimental literature landscape. It's well worth the read.

One of the most emotionally evocative books I’ve read in some time. It is a series of tales set in an imaginary totalitarian country and while each one would stand alone, they are perfectly interwoven. The prose has a certain poetic quality at times. I LOVE this book!

An exceptional book from very talented Vanya Bagaev. Scary, unsettling, funny, witty and scary again. It's strong and dark like a morning coffee and sudden and unapologetic like a slap in the face. Grab it while it’s hot.

This was rough, emotionally charged and crazy all in one.
These little scenes are glimpses, of us spying on the true horror of everyday people, trying to survive in a world that's broken.

But not just broken by man, but broken by demons, the true evil inside and the things humans will do when they think they can get away with it, in a broken world, where most are just trying to survive.

For this to have been fiction, I related to it very hard, this is going to linger with me for awhile.

This was the kind of horror that sneaks up on you and then it's there, and you can't stop, like watching a car crash the horror just builds until it explodes.

Bagaev’s “Deleted Scenes from the Bestselling Utopian Novel” is a haunting and thought-provoking collection of interconnected stories that explore the dark underbelly of a supposedly perfect society. With vivid prose and surreal imagery, the author crafts a chilling portrayal of life under an oppressive regime. Each vignette offers a unique perspective on themes of freedom, identity, and the human spirit’s resilience in the face of tyranny. Bagaev’s writing is both beautiful and unsettling, drawing readers into a world that feels eerily familiar yet disturbingly alien. This book will linger in your mind long after you’ve turned the final page, challenging your perceptions of utopia and the cost of societal perfection.
