Devil House (DCI Cook Thriller Series Book 17) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 109 ratings

‘I thought they used virgins,’ Sergeant Wendy Gladstone said. She thought she had seen it all, but a naked man spreadeagled on a bare floor in a suburban house in London was a first for her.

Wendy surmised middle-class affluence, pagan worship, and human sacrifice. She had read fiction and watched the occasional late-night horror movie, but to be confronted by reality made her feel uneasy.

‘He might have been,’ Inspector Larry Hill said, responding to Wendy’s initial comment.

He had seen more of man’s depravity than his sergeant, but she thought his remark was flippant. Although Wendy knew, as any police officer did, especially in Homicide, that flippancy often defused the situation. It was for them to be dispassionately professional, not to be melancholy or disheartened by humanity's ability to inflict terrible actions against another.

Detective Chief Inspector Isaac Cook, the senior officer in Homicide at Challis Street Police Station, arrived within the hour. He took one look at the body and walked outside the house. 'It's a murder, that's all we need to know,' he said.

Devil House is a very engaging tale of paganism, pedophilia, murder, and embezzlement. Phillip Strang once again provides the Homicide Team of Isaac Cook, Wendy Gladstone, and Larry Hill with a mystery that tests their detective skills while under pressure from new management to solve the case. A young man is found stabbed in what appears to be a satanic ritual. The residents of the hose are missing. A neighbor, a drug addict with a sordid past, knows the occupants and has a strange relationship with them. Other neighbors are aware of the habits of the missing persons. To add to the confusion the divorced wife of the house's missing owner who was declared dead claims some title to the wealth associated with the property. The strings become very tangled as the persons involved have odd relationships and assorted entanglements. Wendy, feeling her age, befriends one of the suspects, leading to complications in the case. Isaac is under pressure to move to a less stressful position as he is being monitored by management because of his earlier conflicts. The team learns of deaths and some monetary shenanigans. The case takes many twists and turns before its resolution.

The characters a well-developed and consistent. The story is nicely developed and moves at a good pace. Well worth reading.

A very intricate story with ongoing investigations by DCI Isaac Cook and his team of Inspector Larry Hill, Sergeant Wendy Gladstone and Bridget, the Challis Street Homicide’s computer expert. This case results from the discovery of a mutilated, naked, male body in the basement of a house in suburban London but being surrounded by burnt out candles with an inverted pentagram painted in red on the floor it indicates some very violent rituals leaning towards Satanism and devil worship. The discovery of another body in the garden of the next-door house adds further intricacies!
Whilst the case goes on, the Scotland Yard hierarchy are playing their own version of politics and this leads to a confusing and surprising conclusion, probably leading to further twists and turns in the next story. To add another intricacy, Isaac Cook’s wife is wanting to move to a larger home, and this causes friction in their household.
At times, the complexities detract from the flow of the story but overall, the author presents an interesting and entertaining story for the reader.

In this mystery Wendy Gladstone plays a more prominent role. She is able to connect with a young woman who had a very traumatic event in her childhood. DCI Cook is still trying to navigate the politics in the department do proper police work. Some interesting suspects and other characters keep the mystery interesting.
