- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2018I've read a handful of these "summoned to another world" series, but this is by and large the best one I've read, and I'll tell you why: it's the main character.
There are several tropes that these isekei heroes fall under, but Satou isn't any of them. He's not some oblivious harem protagonist, he's not some virgin that gets flustered by even glancing at a woman, he's not an extreme introvert that can't hold a conversation to save his life, and he's not an idiot to fully flaunt his power to try to force his new world to fully comply to the expectations of his old world.
He's calm, cool, collected, and intelligent. He's also compassionate to those that struggle, even though he doesn't go out of his way to find them (as you would expect of a normal human being). He's honestly one of the most realistic everyday hero of any of these stories I've read so far. He just wants to have a pleasant journey through this new world of magic and mystery and along the way gets caught up in these situations, or runs into people in serious trouble, and ends up saving a lot of lives and hardships.
Overall, the theme is pretty easy going, but there's plenty of real conflict along the way, which makes the story truly interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2017As someone who keeps up with the WN's translation, I can say this was absolutely worth reading. It becomes apparent very quickly that while the underlying story is the same, the author added new events and subtly changed others. I never felt like I was rereading the WN word for word like I did with the Overlord LNs (though that comparison is probably unfair.)
Second, the translation was done by somebody who clearly knows how English works. Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY grateful that S. does the translations, but the poor English often left me scratching my head as to what's going on, or I had to reread a line several times before I understood. Not so with this LN.
To new readers, I think if you enjoy 'transported/reincarnated in a new world' stories like Overlord or Mushoku Tensei you will enjoy this. I can't recommend it enough.
If I have to criticize anything though, it's that the English translation now makes it sometimes unclear just who is talking from the Youth Squad. Liza was generally serious lines, Pochi ended in ", Nanodesu" and Tama ended in "~?" I understand those last two don't have good translations into English (Pochi's line was changed to ", sir") but it might just be something I have to get used to like I did in the WN.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2018Pros: characters have depth, makes for some relaxed and no-stress reading.
Cons: there's a lot of "down time" where nothing really important happens, and WAY too much time spent on food and other culinary aspects, and the whole "harem situations all the time but not a harem novel" thing can get frustrating when the protagonist refuses to make any kind of move whatsoever on his extremely attractive party.
I loved most aspects of this novel, but the author clearly wants to steer readers away from thinking this novel is a harem novel. The protagonist is surrounded by every possible type of woman (and all of them are drop-dead gorgeous), but refuses every single advance, keeping most women in the series at an emotional arms-length. Some of these female characters are practically throwing themselves at him at times, but the main protagonist refuses to walk the harem path (or ANY romantic path), which might get frustrating at times.
Overall, the characters are well-built and have distinct personalities and quirks, which keeps the story interesting. The lead male protagonist feels like an extremely laid-back vacationer most of the time: he spends most of his waking hours thinking about where he wants to visit next, and the different kinds of food he can eat. Because he's essentially a cheat character with maxed stats and mountains of money, there is no real feel of urgency at all, even during fights and battles. I gave this novel 4 out of 5 stars because although I feel attached to the characters, there are too many points in the book where there's not a lot going on, as well as having too many parts focused on food. I would much rather read about character development or plot than how a bowl of soup tastes (the soup tastes good; I GET IT SO MOVE ON).

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent start
This was a nice start that helps set a number of things into motion and also seems like it could be a nice read to enjoy as well. Looking forward to seeing how the next one goes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with Condition
I recently purchased DEATH MARCH TO PARALLEL WORLD RHAPSODY LIGHT NOVEL 01, and while I was excited to receive it, I was disappointed to find that the book has markings on it. This was not what I expected when ordering a new book. This is not the first time. I bought a different book before it and it had some problems as well.
