4.3 out of 5 stars 1,657 ratings

Stuck with her off-limits, taciturn, hunky movie star client during a sudden snowstorm on Christmas Eve, an extremely capable and highly professional bodyguard must keep him alive and warm without letting the tension building between them get too hot.

Bathsheba (Beth) Ryan can’t thank her best friend enough for helping her land the job of her dreams. After being relegated to second-string security for politicians in DC, being hired as an undercover personal security specialist by a giant Hollywood studio is exactly the kind of action she's always wanted.

Until she meets her first assignment.

Cyrus Malcom can’t thank his agent enough for arranging a blind date with seemingly the woman of his dreams. After spending the past several years playing all the parts and climbing all the ladders, the lonely mega movie star finds himself actually enjoying a night on the town for the first time in ages when he meets the gorgeous, funny, and genuine Ryaine O’Rourke.

Until she shows up at his studio meeting the next day with a completely different name.

A world-wide press tour and too many late-night parties later, Beth simply needs to get through a short, one-day visit during the Christmas holiday, and then she’ll be free of Cyrus Malcom’s confusing hot looks and cold shoulders for good.

But just as they leave the airport, it starts to snow . . .

‘Drama King’ is the second book in the Three Kings Series, is a full-length, contemporary romantic comedy, and can be read as a complete standalone.

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart Review copy was received from Publicity team. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I really love Penny Reid's characters and their unique, personal characteristics. The Three Kings world, based on stories about three talented guys who grew up in Texas and people they know, is fascinating. Each person has so much more to them than the face they present to the world. Character driven stories are great stories. We get both Cyrus and Beth's point of view in alternating chapters in Drama King. We knew Cyrus from Homecoming King and Rex makes a brief appearance here. I did find the first half of the book dragged a little with each of them in their heads with their personal issues. Because most of the story was in their head, the time they actually spent together was limited and I wanted them to spend more time together. I also wanted further development of supporting characters. I liked Cyrus and Beth who are very kind and caring people. Their attraction was believable. Their relationship went from zero to full blast which felt weird. They navigated their personal demons and supported each other when they got to know each other better. Each of them had some great personal growth and helped the other to achieve it. It was gratifying to see their friends and family delighted at their connection and happiness.

I enjoyed Beth and Cyrus' story. I liked the dynamic between these two. They had a ton of chemistry, but she was very strict about keeping things professional. Beth had a wall up, and not just for Cyrus. She definitely had issues to work through, as did Cyrus. He had a lot to figure out about himself, and he maybe didn't do it in the best way at times, but his intentions were always honorable. These two were very entertaining, and I liked every word of their story.

Oh how I loved this book! Drama King by Penny Reid is the second book in a planned trilogy about the reigning kings of high school, where they are now, and if they can find their happily ever after. In this installment, we get Cyrus’s story and meet Bathsheba (Beth) Ryan, a no-nonsense personal security guard to the rich and famous. The banter is spot on, and Reid adds her signature touch blending real life situations into the story bringing her characters to life.

The story kicks off from Beth’s perspective as she stands in for her best friend and former client on a blind date. However things turn sour when (1) the antihistamines she’s been prescribed interact with the one glass of wine she’s drunk waiting on her late date and (2) when her date arrives and it is none other than the boy she had a crush on back home who is now a rising star in Hollywood. As if acting like a drunk fool in front of Cyrus isn’t bad enough, he believes she’s her famous friend. But that isn’t the worst of it. When Beth shows up to her new job the next morning, she’s introduced to none other than Cyrus Malcom, the man she is supposed to protect. Hilarity ensues.

I adored Beth. She breaks all stereotypes. She’s a petite thing living her life to the fullest as a personal security guard in Hollywood. It isn’t as glamorous as it sounds, but she thrives on it. Cyrus is a challenge for her, but one she can handle if she compartmentalizes her feelings. Beth feels like she is starting the job off on the wrong foot and is 100% prepared to resign even though it is the last thing she wants to do. This job is her big break, but how can she protect someone who doesn’t trust her?

Cyrus is amazing! I loved the brief snippets we got of him in Homecoming King, so I was really excited to see that this was his story. He is the consummate party boy, rarely wants to be alone, and spends the majority of his nights at a party or club. After his best friend found love and settled down, Cyrus realizes he wants the same. The problem is he’s having a hard time finding a woman who also wants that. He thought he’d found it with Beth when he thought she was her friend. Despite the disastrous date, he likes Beth, respects her, and because of that tries to avoid her at all costs, mainly because he thinks she doesn’t reciprocate.

I love how Reid sets up these two characters. They are very different, yet also have many things in common. Cyrus and Beth never develop much of a friendship, instead pining over one another from a distance. Yet the constant threat of danger builds a mutual respect. Beth loves him from a distance, and when Cyrus is ready to close that distance, she bolts. Communication is key, and these two are lacking. I love the tension between them, and the dual POV really helps add to the story and their relationship.

Overall, I loved Drama King. I devoured it, there’s no other way to describe it. Beth and Cyrus are easily one of my favorite romance couples. Highly recommend for romance fans and fans of Olivia Dade’s All the Feels.

    3 Stars

This personal rating is surprising to me. I'm kind of obsessed with the first book in the seires. I love it SO much I couldn't stop reading it or recommending it. I fully expected to love this book as much. Unfortunately, I didn't.

I couldn't place my finger on it at first, but I think what it is is a combination of not feeling like the hero and heroine really spent enough time getting to know one another outside of their sexual chemistry and the extreme-ness of both their personalities. I also felt like the blurb was mildly misleading. Based on the blurb, I thought this was going to be a snowed in at Christmas for 3 to 5 days, forced proximity book. But there's very little Christmas in the book (maybe 4 chapters max set during Christmas time and no real christmassy things going on), and their snowed inn overnighter was approximately one night.

I'm totally fine with opposites-attract couples. I've never had an issue with them before. But Beth was one extreme, and Cyrus was the complete and total opposite. She's his body guard, and she's sexually attracted to him, so she feels like she has to be extra diligent in being professional and proper with him. She's uptight, self-righteous, and prone to self inflicting punishment when she feels like she's broken a rule. He's sexually attracted to her, and while he's wildly affectionate with literally everyone, he doesn't touch her at all or talk to her much because he wants it too badly. He's a super extrovert, extremely affectionate with all people, and super friendly. But because they both make choices to keep the other at a distance, they don't really get to know each other.

    Spoilers ahead:

She spends 4 months being his body guard, and they barely speak outside of their professional relationship. At one point, Cyrus even says to the reader that "this is the longest sentence she's ever said to me." It's while she's chastising him about trying to deviate from the prearranged plan. So it's even work related. She observes him all the time and he gives of himself so freely that I did feel like she really knew who he was, but she kept herself closed off from him, so he didn't really know her. I just really dislike it when a character claims to be deeply in love with someone when they really don't know the person at all.

By the time we got to the snowed in overnighter on Christmas Eve, we're 60% into the book. They haven't seen each other in a month. He ends up giving her a little speech about all the ways he adores her, which confused the heck out of me because I hadn't observed any of the things that he said about her. But the shpeel worked its magic on her and she decided to sleep with him just this one time. He automatically assumed this meant they were now a couple, because why wouldn't it? The next morning, he thinks they are going to ride off into the distance on his white horse, and she dumps a metaphorical ice bucket over his warm feelings, and I can't help thinking that he's really just a big dolt. As many say, you know what assuming does, right? As*/u/me. This is what happened.

She's shocked when he expresses wanting to be in a relationship with her and not just having this one sexual interaction (because what kind of man actually wants a deep and lasting relationship, right?). So he decides to give her space, blocks her number, and runs away until Feb 1st. She has to force herself into his life after being convinced by two of her friends to do so.

I just didn't really get any of it! Like, I didn't see how these behaviors could create a lasting relationship. I didn't see any real connection or bond form outside of their sexual chemistry. Their one sex scene was fantastically written and very hot. I enjoyed reading it. And the two other heavy petting scenes. But a real emotional connection? I just didn't get that.

Also, in book 1, it opened with the heroine encountering the drunk hero, and in this book, it was the hero encountering the drunk heroine. The reasons why they both became drunk were very different, but it was weird that they both started the same way. Is book 3 going to have a drunk meet-cute as well? At this point, I feel like it has to have one to keep the series cohesion.

Speaking of book 3, I liked the introduction of the third King, Alaric. Cyrus loves him but has been avoiding him for a year for reasons I still don't fully understand. Alaric was only in one chapter, but he was great. I absolutely loved their physical affection and the fact that they were secure in their masculinity, not being afraid to be men who showed physical affection to each other. I'm very excited about Alaric's book next Christmas. I hope it's as good as book 1. And I'm really hoping it's not about him falling in love with his stepsister. I don't think I could read that.

Despite my aversion to most of this book, it's well written and has very solid characters. I just didn't think they went together. And honestly, I didn't really like the heroine much. I actually liked Cryus less and less as the book went on. He started out a 10 for me and went down to like a 6 by the end. I did like the cast of supporting characters a lot. I'd read an entire series about the female security detail, especially a book about Wren St. James.

Penny is still one of my top authors. This one just didn't hit home for me this time.

Cyrus was nothing I’d expected for a man in his position. He’s just gorgeous inside and out. Beth is his hero, but has past hurts holding her back. I loved them both and the way that they found themselves and each other. If you believe in love and the magic of Christmas, this book is for you.

As much as Bathsheba tried to resist him it was impossible not to fall for our favourite "golden retriever" big movie star! Cyrus was just delightfully inappropriate and perfect in his own personal way for Beth, out stoic and stern bodyguard... if it wasn't for the first night they met.
Their story is super slow but super enjoyable and their christmas may be one of my favourite ever!
Now, the question remains, who is Alaric gonna end up with?

One of the things I like best about Penny Reid's books are that they always offer something unexpected, or extra to the genre. In this case Cyrus is so loveable that I would like him in my Christmas stocking, however he has real emotions that are more life like than the average read. There are also some wonderfully observed small moments of tenderness, humour and thoughtfulness. The sexy times are nicely written, but I would personally prefer more of them as Reid writes them so well. Frankly you can't go wrong with a Reidster book.
