Shade Owens is a YA and adult fiction author of dark stories driven by strong female characters. Having written over twenty books in the young adult dystopian thriller genre, she is now shifting gears due to her newfound passion for psychological thrillers. The darker and more twisted the story, the better [insert maniacal laugh here]. Ironically, she hates horror movies and cannot eat chicken on-bone since it's "gross", yet has no issue describing a dead body in vivid detail.

This book sounded so promising: six death row inmates dropped off on a remote island to fight to the death for their freedom!

Six death row inmates are handed a letter inviting them to compete for their freedom days before their executions. Blindfolded, chained and dropped off a helicopter into the ocean. The goal is to be the last one standing, fight or die trying. But they soon realize they are not the only ones hunting each other.

The first 70% of the book was fast paced and suspenseful. The twists and turns had me hooked and I could not wait to turn the page. I was disappointed with the ending. I feel like there could have been more, it felt rushed and unfinished.

Another issue I had with the writing style was the way Shade went back in time with the characters’ POV’s. Some chapters were headed with the character’s name and “5 years before” or “10 years before” and in other chapters we were transported to the past without any context or warning. It was very fragmented and hard to follow at times.

Overall, this was a 3-star read for me.

Thank you to Shade Owens and BookSirens, I received an advanced copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Brooklyn is on death row awaiting execution. She receives a mysterious letter inviting her to take part in the Death Row Games. All she has to do is survive and she gets freedom. What does she have to lose? She is up against 5 others that have nothing else to lose themselves. The book did jump around timelines a bit, but kept you interested. Another great read by Shade Owens! What I love about her books is that they are all so different and this one is unlike any others that I have read.

Six death row inmates are provided an opportunity for freedom if they participate in a game. Win the game and you are free, lose and die. Think Hunger Games without all of the pomp and with convicted criminals. These inmates are dropped on a secluded island with a handful of supplies. They are provided enough information to know who else has been selected and there is a chip in their arms that lets them know how many participants are left. The number starts with six and changes as people start to die. The rules are simple - kill or be killed - be the last one standing and you win.

There are some truly horrible people dropped on this island - a terrorist, rapist, and a lot of murderers. This book features highlights two characters. Brooklyn has led a very confusing life. She grew up as a survivalist with her dad but he was taken (by force) from her when she was a teenager and she was then placed in foster care. Her experience shaped her to believe that "bad" people should be taken care of and found herself on death row after she killed a very well connected and wealthy rapist.

Eddy is former military who returned home from war with hearing loss and PTSD. After moving to a new town he is bullied in a local bar and when said bullies bring up Eddy's family he sees red (literally) and kills all of them. He's convicted and sentenced to death.

This story will suck you in especially when you realize that the inmates are not the only people on the island. We find out that the game is more than just a game. No spoilers here - just allow yourself to be taken in by the book!
