- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2022Jane's mother had promised to make her a special cake for her birthday so she was in a hurry to get home after school. When she got to the kitchen all she found was a plate with a few crumbs. WHERE'S THE CAKE? Instead of looking for her mother, Jane calls the police. There are some dark hairs next to the plate so the police will check it for DNA to determine who ate the cake.
Of course this is nuts. Police are not going to investigate a cake that has been eaten. However, we aren't reading a police file: we're reading a children's story. The story may not be realistic, but it is a GREAT way to introduce children to the science of DNA. It is a fun story that anyone can enjoy if they just try. I enjoyed it, and I KNOW children will, too. They don't get bogged down with plausibility: they just read it for fun. If they learn something along the way, all the better! Come on: give it a try! You have nothing to lose but a few minutes, but I'm saying those minutes won't be wasted. You may even smile like the rest of us!

The cover of this book is adorable!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2022Who ate Grace’s rainbow birthday cake? There were crumbs around the plate and one single brown strand of hair.
What a mystery! Grace had to call the police for help.
Boys and girls will enjoy reading this thriller as Grace and the detective sort out the clues and finally find the thief.
There is a page in the back of the book, “Can you solve the mini-mysteries?” These are more mysteries that the kids can solve. The author has also added an invitation to join the DNA Club.
The illustrations are beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!
What an awesome book! Beautifully written and illustrated it blends a cool kids mystery with teaching kids about the basics of DNA. And, it has some elements for the little ones to actively participate in solving the mystery. Brilliantly done and executed! My kids enjoyed it (as did I)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative.
A lovely story that explains how DNA works.
I read this to a 1 year old, a 2 year old and a just turned 3 year old and they all enjoyed it, they stayed engaged to the end.
The 2 and 3 year old were able to answer the questions and the 3 year old seemed to really understand what had happened.
It was great.
