- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a pleasant read for very young children about the Christmas season as experienced from a dog’s perspective. It’s probably best understood as a lyrical poem rather than a narrative.
In rhyming meter, the book describes Christmas in various metaphorical ways—for example, how Christmas “whispers,” is “quiet,” is “shining,” or “smells like a forest”—together with pictures of nature that are suggestive of how that’s the case. The overall effect is whimsical, elliptical, and satisfying.
In each illustration of Christmas and nature, the dog is present too. There’s a lot of subtle attention to his facial features, so looking closely at the art is rewarding. The artistic style is reminiscent of some high-quality magazine comics, but with more nuanced and detailed colors.
The book is tastefully and appealingly poetic, in a way that will be easy for kids to hear and appreciate. The rhyme scheme is largely ABCB—for example, “Christmas,” “snow,” “while,” and “go”—but with some deviations here and there. The meter is basically accentual dimeter, with two stresses per line.
In short, this is a neatly done little book that’s likely to be enjoyed by any young kid who likes dogs and Christmas, as well as his or her parents.

A mesmerizing part of the "Teacher's Choice Holiday Favorites," this book is not just another Christmas story; it's a journey through the sensory and emotional spectrum that the festive season evokes, transcending the conventional boundaries of holiday tales.
The beauty of "I Heard Christmas Whisper" lies in its simplicity—a narrative so pure and open to interpretation that it engages toddlers and adults alike. Younger children find joy in the story of a puppy whose love helps a personal kind of Christmas flourish, literally and metaphorically, while older readers glean the profound truth of cherished moments being ephemeral, echoing life's own transience.
Penned in free verse, the author's favorite excerpts evoke a hauntingly beautiful imagery, combining the silent whispers of snowfall with the vivid, glowing warmth that Christmas brings to the heart. The verses gently touch upon the theme of loss only to uplift the spirit with the promise of return, mirroring the cyclical nature of hope and life itself.
Inspired by a personal experience of filling a child's Santa-shaped void with something eternal, the author weaves a tale that is candid, magical, and thought-provoking. "I Heard Christmas Whisper" is a testament to the idea that the departure of childish fantasies doesn't signify an end but rather ushers in deeper, more meaningful realizations.

Calling it "the perfect bedtime story" would be an understatement. This book is an experience—a beautifully illustrated, captivating, and heartwarming journey that stays with you. It invites you to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, urging a rediscovery of wonder not just during the holiday season but in every moment of life.
In conclusion, "I Heard Christmas Whisper" is more than a story. It's a soft echo, a gentle reminder that though the tangible may leave, the feelings, the essence, and the memories are perennial. It's a small yet significant reassurance in the power of hope, an inspirational tradition that can be passed down through generations, making the heart twinkle and glow, long after the lights have dimmed.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI Heard Christmas Whisper encourages the reader to observe Christmas quietly with each of their senses. Many Christmas stories are filled with glitz, glimmer, and never-ending carols promoting Peace on Earth. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to experience peace amid noise. Janice Macdonald's book introduces the practice to be still and know. And even though we may share some sadness at the end of the Christmas Season, it's essential to know it will return next year. Silence is an incredible opportunity for observation and experiencing life in a new way. Janet Gallagher

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful illustrated and poignant festive read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA charming short poetic tale expressing the empheral, yet inwardly eternal, nature of Christmas as witnessed by a beautifully illustrated expressive dog. I especially liked the poignant symbolism of the dog's link with the growing Christmas tree to express increasing maturity and understanding of the festive season that comes with age. I'll definitely be reading this to my nephew this Christmas. Recommended.
