Janice Garden Macdonald is the author and illustrator of 7 children's books and one adult title. She worked in the publishing industry for many years as a representative, library consultant and bookstore manager. She is the recipient of a dozen writing awards in different genres including the Zoetrope short fiction award judged by Joyce Carol Oats and the Moondance Film Festival award for an animated screenplay.

During her time as a bookstore owner, specializing in children's books, she discovered her love of writing and illustration.

She currently lives in Ontario with her husband and dog, Rufus, where they oversee a wetland conservation area.

    This is a pleasant read for very young children about the Christmas season as experienced from a dog’s perspective. It’s probably best understood as a lyrical poem rather than a narrative.

    In rhyming meter, the book describes Christmas in various metaphorical ways—for example, how Christmas “whispers,” is “quiet,” is “shining,” or “smells like a forest”—together with pictures of nature that are suggestive of how that’s the case. The overall effect is whimsical, elliptical, and satisfying.

    In each illustration of Christmas and nature, the dog is present too. There’s a lot of subtle attention to his facial features, so looking closely at the art is rewarding. The artistic style is reminiscent of some high-quality magazine comics, but with more nuanced and detailed colors.

    The book is tastefully and appealingly poetic, in a way that will be easy for kids to hear and appreciate.
