Simple, easy to read and understand
Well written and informative, but written in an easy language. I love that it is set up like a journal, so it is engaging without being dry. Plenty of information, and tips and tricks to help understand and use the information.

About the author

Ferne Bowe is a parent, marketing professional, and author of Life Skills for Young Adults & Life Skills for Tweens.
With two kids of her own, she has first-hand experience with the challenges and triumphs of raising a teen.
While watching her kids growing up, she noticed the gap between the skills kids need to thrive in the real world and what they are taught in school. For example, she noted that while kids are often taught how to get good grades, they are rarely taught how to manage their finances or have difficult conversations.
She is on a mission to close that gap and help kids, and young adults find their purpose, develop self-awareness and confidence, and build their skills to create a life they love.
Her message is simple: Mastering life skills and taking ownership of day-to-day tasks is the key to success, no matter your goals. Adopting this principle helps tweens, teens, and young adults develop the skills they need to live a successful life.
Ferne loves traveling, spending time with her family and friends, reading, and running. She also enjoys watching movies, listening to music, and singing (badly). When she's not in front of a PC, you'll usually find her outside enjoying the countryside.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs a mother who has taken the leap into homeschooling my children, I recently came across a book that made me chuckle with its title: "Everything You Need to Know Before You're 16 but Won't Get Taught in School." It’s funny because it perfectly captures the realities of the public education system, which often overlooks the practical skills our kids truly need to enter adulthood with confidence. My decision to withdraw my children from the public school system stemmed largely from safety concerns regarding my special needs children, but also from the understanding that traditional schools often miss the mark when it comes to teaching life skills. I have hated school even as a young child myself I never wanted to be there, felt it was a waste of time, and my biggest question in any class (if my parents could even get me to go that day) was always "How is this lesson going to help me in my adult life?" and often teachers did not like that question, because they had no valid examples on how the lessons they are forced to teach are going to really help anyone with their future.
We had incorporated this book into our curriculum as part of our mental wellness and life skills lessons, and it has been a seamless addition! The interactive elements, pictures for visuals, and tons upon tons of exercises contained within this book made it an absolute joy to use! The QR code in the book for an additional workbook was awesome! Often when I am choosing books, I still have to create the lessons myself. I do not have to do that with these specific kinds of books and that is a HUGE bonus for me! My favorite part is that the practices outlined in the book are not just for kids or teenagers. As an adult, I have found some of the exercises to be helpful even for myself. There were a good few things within the book that we were able to discuss as our own strengths and weaknesses. It really makes you as a parent look at the areas you can stand to improve on as well when you're willing to be honest with yourself and the people around you. My daughters laughed every time I pointed to myself when talking about the things "we" need to improve on...
I’ve noticed over the years at least at home, that a lot of arguments in our house stem from poor listening skills and assumptions that lead to negative feelings. This book addresses those issues head-on, which in turn helped us all start to improve on how we connect with one another. Taking a step back rather than jumping to conclusions or false assumptions, actively listening to what the other person is saying, and stepping outside of our own feelings to truly understand the other person is difficult for anyone. Practicing mindfulness is a skill that I have always felt to be extremely important. Having the tools to build that skill is a need for anyone to become a well rounded and emotionally stable adult! I highly recommend this book to other parents looking to equip their children with the skills they’ll truly need in life. So many of the lessons are a self reflection of who we are, and who we strive to be! Change always comes from within and working on ourselves is the most important first step in accomplishing anything!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLOVE this book! Highly recommend great conversation starters for teens ages 11-16 mental health, hygiene, finance, social awareness, and so much more. No gender agenda in the book. No woke information. Very appropriate for teens

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified Purchase1. It's easy to read and understand
2. It gives important topics that should be able to help every child/teen.
3. I like how the author tells them that they can skip ahead to the parts they need and write in it to make it THEIR book.
4. I enjoyed the little doodles and visuals.
5. Author tries to emphasize that bad things will happen in life and you decide on your reaction and I think that's importantfor kids to have a position reaction even when negative things happen.
6. The only criticism I have is for the friends and family section, both people groups are majorly important but I feel that the family section had less to talk about and I wish there was more.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI bought this for my nephew but gleaned some info for my 53 year old self. :) I'm learning Spanish and sometimes get down about my perceived slower progress. I am going to start using YET sentences as suggested when I talk about my progress - "I don't know the past perfect tense yet". That one little word is very powerful and changes perspective immediately. If I gained some valuable insight from this book, I know my young nephew definitely will. Get it for every pre-teen and teen you know!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book gives a lot of valuable information that teens might nit hear from the adults around them, but that they really need to know. It talks about self confidence, hygiene, and many other topics teens need to know - in a way that is easy to understand and seems like a friend talking to you instead of a lecture. Love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe majority of this book had to do with understanding, accepting, and harnessing thoughts, enotions, feelings, etc and I thought it had some really useful stuff in there about mindfulness, labeling emotions, reframing negative thoughts, and lots more. This book could be useful to anyone of any age, but I will probably revisit this with my kids when they’re around 11 or 12 yrs old.
