Editorial Reviews

Review

Mostly Human is a very well written book. It moves along quickly, which I love in a book. Many times books about werewolves are boring to me because there are so many of them out there, but not so with this book by Mr. Jolly.

The plot is well thought out and well written. There are a lot of POV changes, so if you aren't into that you may want to think before picking up this one, but it wasn't an issue for me. I like books with lots of different POV throughout.

The characters are well rounded and well developed, but not overdone in any way.
If you're looking for a new book to pick up, I would consider Mostly Human. It wasn't one that would have jumped out at me on a bookshelf, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to give it a read. -

From the Author

When I started Mostly Human, vampires seemed overdone, and I felt to me, like werewolves were getting a raw deal.
Wolves mate for life and Humans try to do the same. So, the idea that the combination of the two became this heartless monster didn't sit well with me. I wanted a werewolf family drama. So I wrote one.

Multi-award-winning author D I Jolly confessed that he wanted to be an author since the age of seven, thanks to a video game called Gabriel Knight.

But it wasn't until he was 23 that he would finish his first book, the comedic noir style detective novel 'A Guy, A Girl and A Voodoo Monkey Hand'.

Since then, he's moved away from humor and tends to tackle more serious topics under the guise of more pop-culture focused themes and genres.

His next book 'Counting Sheep and Other Stories' is a novel length sci-fi thriller which looks at capitalism and consumerism.

The 'Mostly Human' series uses lycanthropy to discuss mental health, specifically the positive and negative effects that bipolar disorder can have on a family.

And his award-winning novel ‘Bait’, takes the ever-popular format of a shifter-romance novel to discuss the importance of consent. ‘Bait’ won Top Preforming Paranormal Romance from Inkitt, and was selected by their best seller predicting algorithm for publication.

Alongside his novels D I Jolly founded and hosts a short story event in Berlin, Germany, and so far, has two short story anthologies published, titled 'Berlin Poetry Club'.

The ‘Heart of Gold’ books are high fantasy adventure novelettes which follow a powerful warlock, and are a return to D I Jolly's sense of fun.

Having read BaIT by the same author I was hooked and decided to read more. Generally, shifter stories are not my thing but I am so happy I read this. I typically view shifter stories in a sparkly, twilight, romantasy way but this was such a great take on it. What if werewolves were real, in our world where supernatural gifts are not a given? How would they fit in? Or in Alex’s case, not fit in, being a world famous rock star and a werewolf.
I loved that the characters are all given their spotlight and are well thought out, giving great depth to the human side of the story. While the werewolf plays a large role, it could easily be seen as a metaphor and can be read from either perspective.
How much did I enjoy this book? I immediately ordered the second.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this was not the typical werewolf novel. The characters are well-developed and draw you in. I felt invested in their lives and wanted to keep reading to learn more about them. The main character is unique in wolf genre and definitely made me want to read book 2. Highly recommended but get both books - trust me, you won't want to wait for the second to arrive.

Mostly Human, by D.I. Jolly, is a story that gives a new spin to the werewolf myth. The story starts when a family visit to a farm turns into a nightmare, as one of the children gets bitten by a trapped wolf. What ensues when the extended family on the farm finally has to face the truth of what’s happening, is harrowing, frightening, emotional, and above all, a testament to family bonds. You can imagine all the possible complications in life as the newby wolf tries to be a normal kid in school. The trials of fitting in at school, going through puberty, and launching a career are enough to drive any kid and his parents bonkers, without having to deal with unintentional morphing.
Jolly makes you feel for the boy’s parents, and the struggle the boy is having, trying to find an identity as two people, or make that one person and a wolf. I started disliking his character near the end, as the attraction women find for him has turned him into a real Lothario. Almost stopped reading at that junction, because if I don’t like the main character, what’s the point of reading about him? But the book ends with a change that I appreciated, and tells you a sequel is on the way. I liked this book enough that I’ll probably buy the sequel, and I think werewolf fans will enjoy it.

This is a GREAT Read. I love this type of Werewolf story. This Werewolf still with humanity noted, and the coming into his wolf. A family's journey with their loved one's affliction. AWESOME start to a great series, and yes, a big cliffhanger

Only nitpick is that it felt a bit rushed to conclude things in book two. Could easilly have made room for a third book with the cast.

Never judge a book by it's cover but I have to say it doesn't look as bad in real life as it seems here.
Honestly I didn't think I would like this book because I am really not a sci-fi girl. And even if I am, I guess I would be more into vampires than werewolves. But I have to say I got really addicted to the book after a few pages. It's damn well written, full of unexpected turns which made me want to strangle the writer. After a while I realized that everything happens for a reason and that the writer has his reasons.

The story of Alex hit me like a ton of bricks. His story is definitely different from most teen-movie stories. He seems like a very compassionate guy, you actually just wanna hug. Seeing the process of him becoming bigger and never losing sight of his dreams is really empowering.
Sarcasm is just one more service this books offers. I caught myself enjoying that continuously dry humor which brought a smile to my face several times.

I really admire the little bubble the writer created here which allowed me to escape from reality from time to time. This book really opened my heart and now that I am writing this review I am still very emotional about it. I am grateful that I don't have to wait long till the second part got published.
In case you are still unsure whether to buy this book or not. Just do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A coming of age story with a twist.

When Alex is bitten by a wolf he soon finds out that his life is going to change forever – and that of his whole family along with it. His condition – more a metaphor for depression and aggression at first – forces everyone to focus their attention on him. How the family and especially Alex’ older sister Annabel deal with these news is touching and remarkable. If only every parent would show this level of understanding for their children. Yet, the characters are authentic and more than likeable.
The author’s light and amusing tone carries the reader through Alex’ childhood, his adolescence and into his life as a rockstar. By then Alex seems to have gotten his condition under control. But when his family is suddenly threatened the wolf Alex long tried to suppress will stop at nothing to protect them.
A fantasy novel, yes, but above all a story about how to cope with the unexpected and even more so the unchangeable.

First of all i love it!

I really like that it is not another standart werewolf story but there is a lot of realism in this story even if the main Protagonist is a Werewolf.

The Plot is great but most of all i love the writing. D.I. Jolly really made me feel the story and the different Charakters and got me from laughing to tearing up in moments. Thanks for this great book everybody should have read!
