Purchase options and add-ons
"It's about fifteen days, Tori," the commissioner sighed. "If we don't get the trinity back online within fifteen days—give or take—there won't be enough power capacity left to bring it back up, and the reactor will be past the point of no return. Without the reactor, this ship is going to get very cold, and everyone will freeze to death."
Desperate to get the surgery she needs, Tori transfers aboard the Sailor's Gambit I to catch a vigilante. But the situation quickly unravels, and our unlikely investigator discovers that a serial killer on the loose is the very least of her problems.

About the author

Gre7g lives in Alabama with his wife, Kyoht, and a small menagerie of pets. He enjoys writing stories about monsters in love, brews beer that he won't drink, programs computers that don't look like computers, and fantasizes about worlds without so many people in them.
Skeleton Crew is Gre7g's third novel. His first two were about werewolves and Minotaurs, respectively. He's written a couple of novellas and a handful of short stories; most of which can be found on his website:

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024It's well-paced, genuinely funny, and full of enough warmth to keep you going. It's also smartly written, pleasantly dense, and offers plenty to chew on without bogging itself down. But the real soul of this book is its characters, and they're all delightful, even the prickly ones!
Then there's a paradigm shift so surprising and well-executed that it had me standing and howling at my screen. It was a bold move, and the final act is worth the asking price alone!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024Really enjoyed the book. Nothing was as it seemed, and numerous times I thought I had it figured out only to be proven otherwise, and even when my guess was on the money, I still had to figure out the why and how right along with Tori. If you enjoyed Reaper's Lottery this is definitely a worthy follow-up.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024A great sequel to Reaper's Lottery that serves as a continuation of Tori's character. The story is filled with well-crafted characters and a layered mystery aboard a generation ship. There is also a light-heartedness that complements the darker elements of the story that I enjoyed. Would recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2024An excellent mystery that I couldn't put down. A few great twists that were well telegraphed with hindsight. I'll be looking forward to the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024It is great to see a sympathetic krakun, and some information to round out the world building as to how life works on their side. The Sailor's Gambit I, the ship that the story takes place on, is one heck of a pressure cooker in a social sense. Both frustrating Tori's efforts to resolve the murders, and lending urgency to do so!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025I enjoyed the previous book, "Reaper's Lottery," despite its flaws, and felt a few tweaks would have vastly improved it. Props must be given to Gre7g, who not only avoided making the same mistakes as the last book, but also upped the stakes, gave better emotional connection and attachment to the characters, and did something most sequels fail to do, and built upon the previous story. The mystery, which was the weakest part of the previous story, is among the best parts of this. And with the flaw I helped him avoid, I have no complaints about this story. Side note: the side story was relevant this time and tied nicely into the theme. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2024I'm a long-time fan of Gre7g Luterman, so I really hate to be critical of his newest work, especially because I've so enjoyed his other contributions to the Hayven Celestia setting. I love his characters, who always seem real to me. Heck, his main character from the Kanti Cycle inspired my main D&D character a few years back. Tori seems like a whole, real person, and mostly so do the peripheral characters.
I'm a supporter of Gre7g on P@treon, so I had the privilege to read chapters while this book was a work-in-progress. I was pretty much expecting Executioner's Gambit to be a better book than Reaper's Lottery. I feel it was a reasonable expectation. The individual chapters were excellent. And the book IS a good one.
It just doesn't exceed the first. And I'm really not sure what it's lacking.
I gave Reaper's Lottery four stars. I gave this three stars (in my own personal rating system, two is "Okay", three is "good book, would read again", four is "Excellent book, *will* become part of my personal library", and five is "Life-changing book".
Maybe it's that the threat of the situation doesn't feel quite immediate. In the first, Tori was in real physical danger from the killer she was hunting. In this book, part of the main plot is that Tori is trying to find a murderer that nobody wants her to find, because they see him as a folk hero. And Tori *is* in danger, but really not from that. (Not wanting to spoil the plot, I will refrain from mentioning details) She is concerned about the possibility, but nobody really makes a move to threaten her. Those *other* threats really don't seem *immediate*, even though they are seemingly *inevitable*.
That's about the only thing I can think of that might have been improved at all, and it wasn't very apparent from the previews. It still isn't, really, just because it's a very subtle thing. I'm not even sure if I'm right about why Executioner's Gambit feels like a lesser book.
It IS a good read, and I recommend it, especially for anybody who's already read any of the Hayven Celestia books.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024This book did a really excellent job of depicting/exploring the ramifications of a disabled person/protagonist, the mental and physical hardship of it. In Tori, I saw a lot of what my disabled friends have said about their experiences, and it was nice to see them reflected in her struggle. It's very clear to me that Luterman has a lot of experience with disability, directly or indirectly I don't know, because of how well it is depicted here.
It's also just a very good mystery story! I can't wait to re-read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You never know what to expect!
Fantastic job, Mr. Luterman! I mean, what with the overflow of mysteries of all kinds, science fiction included, THIS book stands out for the vibrancy of its story, the carefully developed plot, the secondary tale, the characterization, the fine art and worldbuilding... Everything will keep you glued to the pages without a moment of boredom!
The best part is how the ambiguity plays a role in defining the characters -everyone here is motivated by selfishness and the same main protagonist is not exempt! And yet, when it comes to giving the spotlight, we understand that people is not supposed to be all-good nor all-evil.
Everything happens inside a 10.000-crew generational ship. No one can get out. And you would neverf expect what happens after it's clear there's a serial killer aboard. THIS is a mystery! I WANT MORE!
